THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, MAY 4, 18G7. Mr. Swinburne's "Song of Italy," which pnnjiismi'i'tmcu in AviipaiKi, u an enthu Biastio laudation of llazainl and the revolu tionary heroes. In one fine passage the poet Bees Freedom and Italy in a vision, and Italv is thus addressed by Freedom: "Because the years were heavy on thy head Because dead things are dead; ' Because thy chosen on hill-side, citv. and plain Are shed as drops of rain; Because all earth was black, all heaven was blind, . . And we cast out of m ind ; Because men wept, saying, Freedom, knowing of thee, Child, that thou was not free; Because wherever blood was not shame was Whcie thy pure toot did pa.s; Because on Promethean rocks distent Thee loukr eagles rent; Because a serpent stains with slime and loam This that Is not thv Rnmp; v Child of my womb, whose limbs were made m me, ' Have I lorgotten thee ? In all thy dreams, through all these years on wing, Hast tbou dreamed such a thing? The mortal mother bird oatsoars her nest, The child outgrows the breast; But suns as stars shall fall from heaven and " cense, , Ere we twain be as these; I Tea, utmost skies forget their utmost sun, . ' Ere we twain be not one. my lctner jewels sewn on skirt, ana neui, I have no need of them, Obscured and flawed by sloth of oraft or power; But thou, lhat wast my flower, The blossom bound between my brows and worn In sight of even and mom, From the last ember of the nameless wcgt To the dawn's baring breast I were not Freedom if thou wert not free, Nor tbou wert Italy. j iiitsiiv lune iiikthiucu wim oiooq, lmpenneu With tears of all the world ! The torpor ot their blind brute-ridden trance jxiiib rjuniuuu unu cuius r ranee; And tipain sobs hard through strangling blood; and snows Hide the huge Eastern woes. But thou, twin-born with morning, nursed of noon, And blessed of star and moon, What shall avail to assail thee any more, From sacred shore to shore ? Have Time and Love not knelt down at thy r ieer, Thy sore, thy soiled, thy s wen, Jiesh from the flints and niiro of murderous ways, And dust of travelling days ? Bath Time not kissed them, Love not washed them fair, And wiped with tears and hair ? Though God lorget thee, 1 will not forget; Tboueb heaven and earth be set Against thee, O unconquerable child, Abused, abased, reviled, LHt thou not less from no funeral bed Thine undixbonored head; Xove thou not less, by lips of thine once prest, 1 This my now barren breast; f Seek thou not less, being well assured thereof, O child, my latest love. For now the barren bosom shall bear fruit, Songs leap from lips long mute, And with my milk the mouths of nations fed, Again be Rlad and red That were worn white with hunger and sorrow & ana imrsi And tbou most fair and first, J Thou whose waim hands and sweet live lips I ieei Upon me for a seal; Thou whose least looks, whose smiles and little siabs, Whose passionate pure eves. r Whose dear lair limbs that neither bonds could nruise Nor haie of men misuse, Whose flower-like breath and bosom, Oh 1 my child, Oh ! mine and undefined, Fill with such tears as burn like bitter wine These mother's eyes of mine, Thrill with huge passions and primeval pains The fulness of mv veins. Oh ! sweetest head seen higher than any stands, I touch tbee with mine hands, I lay my lips upon thee, Ohl thou most sweet, To mt thee on tny ieei, And with the Are of mine to nil thine eyes, 1 say unto thee, Arise. J A Dinner of Horse-Meat. Tie following note, from an American gentle man travelling in Europe, gives some account of a dinner at which he ate horse-meat, not so greatly to his own disgust as might be sup posed: "STUTTdABn, March 26, 1867. I dined yester day with the 'Society for the Protection of Ani mals,' on the occasion of their animal banquet. The society availed themselves of this occasion to prove to the public that horseflesh is a de sirable addition to the meats now in use, and is so cheap aud nourishing that efforts should be made to bring it into use. We had it served and cooked in different ways, and having eaten it in each shape (in fact, I dined altogether lrom it), I can speak knowingly ot Its merits. "We nrst had fitet de chevai. "This was well cooked, and was tender and iuicv, and 1 do not thinr that, if it were placed sideby side with filet d loeuf, one person in a dozen could tell the difference. , The next dish was tongue oi norse. iois was dry, not fat ; hard, and had a disagreeable flavor, tomething resembling the smell of harts horne. Its hardness may have been the fault of the cook, but it was entirely wantimr in the melting tenderness that is the excellence of beef tongue. "Next came a roast horse ; this was again very good, well flavored and juicy. The animal was a scveo-vear old horse, not lat ened or pre pared iu any'way. In fact, beef or mutton as lean as this horseflesh was, would, I think, have been loo dry to be eittable. If the prejudice cc ;.id be overcome, our tat 'Tom' or 'Charley' would furnish iced lor the summer.' W. (J. P." "Charley" now draws a coach, at the age of twenty-two. . His companion, "Tom.'J died this spring, uud wan eaten by dogs. . Vgly Clnb of tbe University or Virginia. i The Charlottesville Chronicle says: This now famous association held an election on Saturday afternoon, to decide who should be , the recipients ot the honors annually awarded by the Society. The election resulted as follows: ' ' 1. Mr. H. Ilaivey Chambers, of Mecklenburg, President of the Club. 2. Mr. WiUiani Wallace Scott, ot Oranee county, was the Uoiiest Man, and will receive the Boots at the end of the session. 3 Mr. Fay Hempstead, of Little Rock, Ar kansas, wa9 declared the Handsomest Man, and will receive the Hat. I. Mr G. W. A. Brantley, of Georgia, was declared lite most Vonceued Man, and will recei ve the Klippers. He was run pretty clo.e by Nr. Turnbull, of Baltimore. 5. Mr. Frank C. Wilson, of Augusta county, was elected the Smartest Man, and will receive the Pyramid of Candy. ' The Club intend to nave a very imposing cele bration at the close of the session. 1 . Tb Latest Thing In Hats. The Indian Daily News, an East India journal, says: "We have been requested to draw atten tion to a monster solar hat. patented recently. The hat measures twenty-seven Inches in length, twenty-two inches tn breadth, and is iweive inches deep; not only large enough to protect the head against sunstroke--its avowed pur pose but sufficiently large and buoyant, we should imagine, to serve as a canoe on occasions of emercency. We commend it to the considera tion ot all in want of a Teally serviceable article. In our travels in South Afrioa we have seen Kaffir but not very much larger." , What wonder the French "Exposition de l Ituliirie" is ao behindhand, when its con ductor is Monsieur le Play f - ENGINES, MACHINERY.
