I 3 THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH TRIPLE SIIEET PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1867. For the Jiytening Ttlnrmph. CONFESSION Of THE CONFIRMED. BY DAVID rADL llttOWN. Dedicated to the IteV. H. V. Ducachet. , Before thy altar, mighty Lord: Thy altar, here on earth, The heart and knee in blefis'd accord Bow in this second birth. Born first in sin a child of grief, I spurn'd Thy saving grace, And sought how vainly sought I relief , Amidst a fallen race. In darkness seal'd, in vain the eye Life's devious path explor'd; I heard no precept from on High No world save this adored. I saw no cross on Calvary I heard no dying groan; In riot, rout, and revelry, I liv'd for earth alone. . In pomp and show and empty pride, My chief delight I sought; What reok'd I that a Saviour died? What that my soul was bought I The price was paid: His precious blood, His suffering on the tree, Aton'd alike for bad and good Aton'd of course for me. I quaflTd the brimming cup of toyj And bade the health go round; I knew I dreamt of no alloy, And no alloy I found. I saw no Circe in the bowl, I heard no Syren's voice; But yielded the immortal soul To false and ileeting joys. Time still rolled on, and every hour Kstrang'd me from above; I never felt a Saviour's power I only knew llis love. I traversed o'er Life's treach'rous seas With full and flowing sail. And sporting with the zephyr breeze, I thought not of the gale. It came nnthought of still it came: And toss'd, and tempest-driven, I found no hope but in Thy name, No refuge but in Heaven. ' Now, now, dear Lord, my daily food Defies remorse and dread; The wine I drink 's a Saviour's blood; His body is my bread. ; Celestial life beams on the sight In one unclouded ray; And bursting from the realms of night, I hail eternal day. CITY . INTELLIGENCE. rOB ADDITIONAL LOCAL ITEMS SEX 0UT8IDN FA0K8. A Little Excitement. Yesterday afternoon quite an excitement was created on Chesnut street by the apperance of a female in male attire, ot a greyish color, cap, veritable pants, a half coat and half dress, and high-heeled patent leathers. It was found necessary, in order to prevent a mob from blockading the sidewalk, to call in the aid ot a policeman, who escorted the fair one to the station for protection. On inquiry into ber history, it was ascertained that Mrs. Ellen Beard Harman, a widow, is teacher in the Hyeienic Medical College, on Sixth avenue, NewYork. and that she bad come to the city yesterday to purchase goods for that Institution. While living, her huBband published a monthly paper in New York, called The Reformer, and also a temperance paper, known as the Tempe rance Tocsin. Mrs. Harman assisted in these enterprises, and her writings were considered by all who read them to be hlphly instructive, bhe visited the rooms ot the Press Club in the afternoon, from which place she was kindly escorted to the wharl by an officer sent for by Mayor McMichael, who was present at the rooms ot the Club to listen to the address bv Francis Wells, Esq., on "The Mission of the rresE."
