Prince Frederick of Hesse Darmstadt. This nobleman, a brother of the late Grand Duke ot Hesse Darmstadt and uncle of the pre sent Duke, died recently at Paris, at the ad vanced uge of seventy-nine years. When a young man Prince Fiederick renounced the Protestant religion and embraced Catholicity, becoming a member of ihe clergy and being a lay cardinal of the Hainan Catholic Church. His father, Louis 1 of ilesse Darmstadt, who was a bigoted Protestant, drove the deceased from tho Grand Duchy, iitiercoinDelllng him to make u renunciation of his rights to the suc cession of the ducal throne. He retired to France, and did not return lo his native land until alter the death of his father in 1830. He did not long remain in the Duchy, however, but soon returned to Paris, where he lived In great retirement to the time of his death. SI. IltUorir. In the death of M. Hlttorir, member of the Institute, which look place recently at Paris, the artistic world has suffered a severe loss. The deceased was a native of Cologne, in whloh city he was born in 1792. lielng destined by his father for an architectural life, he was placed under the best masters in Ills native place, and at seventeen years of age was sent to l'aris, where he studied under IVrcler and Belauger, who took a great interest in his progress. He rapidly attained a prominence, and in 1811 was appointed Inspector of Royal liulldlugs; and, on the death of lielanger succeeded to the position of Koyal Architect. His principal works were the construction of the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, and tho embellishment of the Champs Klysees, and the Placode la Con eorde. He also built L'Amblgu Comlque (theatre), with many other works of a different character. Among his lesser works may be mentioned the Abattoir du Itoule. As au au thor, M.
