Church was filled to overflowing on Sunday afternoon, the occasion being; the Sixth Anniversary ol the Juvenile Missionary Soricty attached to the Sabbath School. Tho exercises were opened with prayer by the Pastor, after which the pro gramme, which had been propared for the occa pinn, was regularly pone through with. Several divines were present, and brief addresses made by them to the children. The Secretary's repoit was iead, and listened to with, no little interest. The receipts during the past, says the report, from the different Dands and circles composing the Society, have been over $217, all of which had been expended in a way well calculated to advance the cause of Christianity in the heathen lauds very materially. After the award of a few testimonials, the assemblage was dismissed with the benediction. One of the most prominent features of the occasion was the singing by the children. They per formed their part well, reflecting no discredit whatever upon the merits of their instructor. A Singular Casb. A German named John Sauers, living in Devitt's court, Seventeenth Ward, hung out a flag yesterday. He fought throughout the war, wus wounded, and receives a pension. Yesterday was the day for the pay ment of pensions, and in honor of it he dis played the national bunting. About 6 o'clock in the afternoon a party of live men passing his house saw the dag, and, with some trouble, tore it down. Sauers tired upon them with a pistol from the second-story window, and George Hunspur, one of the quintette, received a ball in his leg, where, at last accounts, it still remained, eiauers was arrested and held in $2000 to answer, by Alderman Shoemaker. Fatal Accident. Mr. John Cope, Assistant Superintendent of the Philadelphia and West Chester Railroad, met a violent death yesterday atternoon. He was entangled between two car's of a train at the new depot, Thirty-first and Chesnut streets, ar.d was mashed so fearfully that he survived but five minutes. His body was taken to his home, at the corner ol Thirty first and Oak streets. The Coroner held an in quest. The testimony showed the case to be purely accidental. Coroner's Inquest. The Coroner held an inquest last evening on the body of a man named James Perry, aged 50 years, who died at the hotel, No. 929 Market street. Mr. Perry Lad been in a poor state of health for some time back, aud last evening he died in a few moments after going into '.he hotel. An inquest "was also held on the body of Jacob Eueland, colored, who died suddenly at No. 23 Gillis' alley. Payment ok Mercantile Taxes. The Ap praisers of Mercantile Taxes for 1807 have nearly completed their labors, and the City Treasurer is now receiving payment for this tax from persons doiug business in the Eleventh, Twcltth, Thirteenth, Fourteenth, Fifteenth, Twenty-fourth, and Twenty-seventh Wards, Bridge at Callowhill Street. The subject of a bridge over the Schuylkill at Callowhill street was discussed in the Finance Committee of Councils last evening. An ordinance asking the Legislature lor permission to build a bridge at that locality was postponed until next Mon day night. Return op Fines and Penalties. The foll owing Committing Magistrates have paid to the City Treasurer the tines and penalties re ceived by them during February: J. H. Massey, $59; John Clouds, $40; and Lewis Godbou, $41, making a total of $141. The Cause. The clang of the fire bells at 3-45 yesterday, was caused by a trilling tire at No. 1023 Rodman street. M. Cousin was buried on the 24th ult., in Pore la Chaise Cemetery, after tho per formance of a religious ceremony in the Church nf th Sorbonne. M. Durtiv. the Minister of Public Instruction, was present, and most of the learned bodies ot Paris sent tic nutations. Tho pall-bearers were M. Putin, thd senior member of the faculty of letters; M. The Select and Common Councils of the City of Philadelphia do ordain, That the Mayor oi Philadelphia be and he Is hereby authorized to borrow, at not less than par, ou the credit of the city, from time to time, one million eight hundred thousand dollars, to be applied as lollows, viz.: First. To pay deficiencies, one million five hundred thousand dollars. Hecond. For the purchase of the Lansdowne F.sta'e, and improvement of the same, one hundred thousand dollars. Third. For a House of Correction, one hundred thousand dollars. Fourth. To ray the increase In the School Teachers' and House Cleaners' salaries, one hundred thousand dollars for which interest, not to exceed the rate of six per cent, per annum, shall be paid half yearly, on the first days of January and Julx, at tne olllce of the City Treasurer. The principal of said loan Rhall be pay able and paid at the expiration of thirty years from the date of the same, and not before, without the consent of the holders thereof; and the certificate thereior.ln the usual form of the certificates of City Loan, shall be Issued In such amounts as the lenders may re quire, but not lor any fractional part of one hundred dollars, or, if required, In amounts of five hundred or one thousand dollars: and It shall be expressed In said certificates that the loan therein men tioned, and the Interest thereof, are payable free from all taxes.
