8 THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1867. AMUSEMENTS, Inolisii Oteba. The JCnchantrett, notwltti eland mp trie inclemency of the jveaUior attracted n good houso last evening, but the performance had the usual drawbaoka lneiden to the "first night" of a show-piece. The scenery urirl BpjK)lntmcntB were very good, the cUessei kamlRotne, and thetnnmbpr of persons enocngod ": li " Me hut the in its representation quilo respec... . extreme length of many of the scenes made the performance drag considerably. The opera, fonld fcc curtailed with great advantage; and, lor the matter of that, the "ballet" might bo omitted altogether, and the public not lose any thing by the omiBslou. This department last evening was anything but "artistic," and Instead f add iug'lo. the sucoessf ul rend ltion of tho piece turned in any of the scenes iuto positive bur Itsque. The. music of tho Enchnntras, though lifht and generally agrecnble, Is so much of the "I'd be a Butterfly" school, ns to create but little interest la the listener. The best music in it is that composed by Dr. W. P Cunnlngtoti, of this city, under whose direction it was first produced, some years ago, at the Walnut Street Tnoatro. The Whole of the prologue, containing a very fine chorus and other grand music; tho "lloloro," sung by Miss Hlchings, at the end of tho first act, and afterwards repeated by her at the close of tne Jopera, the fine chorus, "Down .in Ihe Mantling Glass" which, by-the-way, wae strangely omitted last evening and Other fine bits, are all the Doctor's brain work; and to tell the truth, a-id with all tfoe deference to Balfo, we prefer the work of C. to that of D. decidedly. Much ol the music of the latter is lusiphl and tiresome, although pome of the solos are conceived In his best vein, And save the opera from positive failure. In tbis category may bo classed Mr. Heguin's fine nolo in the first act, "She is seea where the Vapors of Mom Arlse;"ihat for Mr. C'amcpcll In the second ct, a noble composition, grandly executed by Mr. C, and the grand arias for the tenor andnoprano in the second ana third acts. Among BaJfe's choruses. "The Pirate' Sere nade" is bout the only one that will survive liim. The others are generally luckig In spirit, and some of them are abun dantly endowed with the somnolent qualities necessary to put an audience to sleep in the shortest space of time. It Is a pity that the larce amount of money which has unques tionably been expended in the pioduction of the Enchantress, had not been devoted to the getting up of something more likely to take with the public As It Is, tho piece, we think, is destined to have a very short run when It would pro bably take several weeks' successful perform ance of it to remunerate the management for Its outlay. "The role of Stella, the "Enchantress," was beautifully sung and acted by Miss Richings, who, indeed; throughout the whole opera; dis played her great abilities as a histriou aud vo calist to perfection. She also looked the char acter as well as acted it, and seemed enchant ing enough to have turned the heads of others than the fortunate "Don Sylvos." Mr. Castle performed the latter character admirably, and sang the music of his part with the utmost grace and fervor. Mr. Campbell, as the "Kegent," had but little to do, but that little made the audience regret that Balfo had not taken more care of his baritone. If is only solo was superbly sung and deservedly encored. The acting of Mr. Seguiu, as the "Pirate Chief," was excellent, as was also that of Mr. Peter IticU ings as "Doctor Mathanaslus." Mr. Ricliings was very warmly received In fact, something sRin to an ovation was accorded him on his Hist apjrcMiiuK on the stage. The characters of "Forte Braoclilo." by Mr. Peakes'Nuaruna," by Mr. Wylie; and 'HJuloas," by Mr. Arnold, were all well rendered. The chorus, for a first uight, was very acceptable, and the orchestra unob jectionable, Mr. Dietrich, the talented leader, performing bis arduous duties capitally. The Enchantress will be repeated this evening for the benefit of Miss 'Hlchings, when, doubt less, its rendition will be much more success fully accomplished than last evening. The energy, talent, and industry of the accom plished benejiciareaje deserving of a substantial recognition at our hands, and if we do not find a lull and fashionable audience at the Academy of Muslo this evening, we shall be wol'ully dis appointed. . . Benefits To-night. At the Chesnut. for the benefit of Miss Helen Western, that ludy will appear as "Thlsbe" in the Actress of Padua, and as "Paul" In the Pet of the Petticoats. At the Walnut, Mrs. Mowers plays for her tarewell benefit "Jane Shore," and "Adrlenne le Beaupre" in the new drama called the Duel in the Muit, supported by Messrs. J. C. McC'ollotn, J. B. Huberts, Maurice Neville, and the whole company. At the Arch, for Mr. O. I. Fox's farewell benefit, Zillah, jack and Gill, aud the burlesque Colleen Jiawn will be played. Miss Fanny Her ring will appear, in conjunction with the two Foxes, for this occasion only. ThkGermania. Mr. Davenport began his professional career in what is termed "the pulmy days of the drama," when It was centred loostly In the Eastern cities, and not so widely distributed over the Union us at presnnt. Ho made his drbut at an early age, in Boston, as "Wellborn." in A New Way to Pay Old Debit, the "Sir Giles" of the eveulng belnir tho great Junius Brutus Booth. Ills success was decided, and he soon bocume a prominent autor in Bos ton, New York, and I'liiludolphla. About iSl'.l lie visited Europe, and made his first appear ance in London at the Princess Theatre, in the charprtcr of ".Sir Thomas CliU'oitl," in The Hunchback. Ho subsequently acted the stand ard Hhakesperiau characters with success in Kngland for six years, wnen lie returned to America, and made his reuntree in New York in the character of "Othello," the acknowledged "best American actor who had visited Great Britain." His successful achievements since In bis native couutry are well known. He has always been an especiul favorite in Philadel phia, and will be gladly welcomed on Monday next, when he will appear In his favorite role of "Hamlet," of which the New York Spirit of the -YwiMsays: "Mr. Davenport Is, beyond a doubt, the best Hamlei' ou the American stage. His acting of the part displays true artistic tlnish and earnest study. An admirable performance, and one which will benefit every student of hhakrspeare to witness."
