THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1G, 1861 ntfn NUMBER CVII. MW roil MENTAL BTSrHPTIOR, AND A CXJBB OB DT-POCHONDBU, HT-FOCRIHT, OB ANT COKPLAIKT F A BY BBBB. QUI SERIES EDITOR. ALMANAC AND DIARY. kffiOBT JJETRE-IIXOOICAI, OTISERVATJONS FOB TUB WEAK. February. llndy, 11. Important news received by the Atlantic Cable that the Fenians at Ktl larney. Ireland, were "rising." A tho tlate of the despatch is 4 o'clook la the morning, this neem an encouraging alga for the hitherto lazy Irishmen of that district. Tacsday, 19. A still further encouraging report from Irelnnd. It is reported that some of the Fenians are going to "cut" the Cable. It Is supposed the charges for messages being so high, the Fenians will use the mail, and thus "cut" the Cable and the Company. Wednesday, 13. Still later from Ireland. Tho Feuiaus thai rose so early on the lltli ItiBtaiH have all retired before the enemy. The enemy are up yet, and have been up all night, and do not think of retiring. Thursday, 1. Meeting of City CowncKs Nothing of importance from that body, excepting the resolution to prevent rail way companies from salting their track 1 was postponed until next winter. Friday, 15. Mr. Johnson, a gentleman of color, appointed to a first-class clerkship In the Treasury by Mr. McCullocn. Very many of the white clerks are now putting on black looks. Saturday, 16. Series. Coltjms Day. The Ed lor, having signed the pledge against using the Schuylkill water, expects his articles will have more mirU In them here after. HAND-BOOK OF SCHUYLKILL, and GUIDE TOTOURISm For the purpose of obtaining information as le the condition of tho Schnylkill water since the agitation of the subject by the City Coun cils, as to the fact whether the water we drink is pnre enough, without mixing it with TArious extracts of logwood, or burning fluid, r any other liquid, taxed or untaxed, we made lie tour of the noble river from the Dam to Manaynpk; and being accompanied by a highly scientific gentleman, and a judge of water, he lem a member of the Sons of Temperance, cur readers can rely upon a correct analysis not only of the water,, but also of the scenery along tho route. ' Some muddy remarks were made in City Councils on Thursday alxmt the Schuylkill water, but the thing was strangled, or choked, whether ',by the ingredients of the water or of the members, we did not learn. Last summer many of the memlers said they washed their hands of the whole business of the Fairmount Park Extension; and, judging from the water, their hands could not have been spotless pre vious to the washing, and the effects of such purification on the part of the members is jooticeable to-day. DROP OF SCHUYLKILL WATER MAGNIFIED. Leaving the Dam behind us, we struck out in the tow-path, passing two or three dirt heaps that had been shot down (when it ought to Jmve been the driver instead). We found some cbject8,evidontly the carcases of animals, which jny scientific friend said were the remains of 58 CAH-NIYOIio-. ANIMAL", Which abound in this vicinity, ng the surplus animal matter that is worked off by the Pennsylvania Railroad, and are supposed ly geologists to bi4ong to the coal period, and liave now come to a full stop. Proceeding further, with the beautiful Park on our right, we passed a small brewery and sewer, where xny friend stopped to get a drink not at the ewer, but at the brewery and then pursued our way, without further note, excepting pass ing a few cemeteries, to what is poetic ally call the "Falls of the Schuylkill," in which . . .1 il. - - u- dilll,i!1B: VIEW OK TUB FALLS OK SCHUVLKILL. the fallinc was more evident on land than on the water. Here was a modest soap factory and bone-boiling establishment, but the pro prietor informed us he did not run his refuse into the river, but into a small ditch at the i.o-v t ids establishment. My scientific friend 3F a 1 p ruv rf v ' , eied lim wlww tfco ditch emptied f He wul he was not responsible for the ditch, and he had never inquired. Front this point to Manayuuk the houses began to thicken on both sides of tho stream, as likewise did the water, and our arrival at the fountain head made cadi of us vow that we would help the capacity of the works at Fairmount by promising to drink no more water of it in its pure and unmixed state this year. Pefore leaving these classic, grounds we made some sketches of the striking points in this enterprising town, which we here transfer. - " ".Ti ! Vaunt waTjiuX-, TJ TANOnAMA OF TUE CITY OF MsSAVtrSK. PLEDGE Of the Anti-Hydrant Water Society. I promise I will never nse as a beverage any liquid known as Schnylkill water, whether taken from the hydrants, lire-plugs, the basin, or from the canal. That I will never encour age its use in others, but will use all endeavors to discourage tho use of the same by preempt and example, as I consider the use of it inter nally as nothing but a species of murder to the different lively and happy niiiniahnilte that now inhabit every drop of it, and that the total destruction of so many animals in their infancy justly comes under the law of "cruelty to animals." To all of which I solemnly swear, etc. 'ame . Witness . Church Privileges for the Poor. The bill to allow tho question of Sunday travel in the City ears to be put to a popular vote has passed the Pennsylvania Legisla ture, and if carried at the polls, the poor man will be enabled to ride to church instead of walk, as heretofore; and this extra induce ment, it is thought, will crowd our churches to such an extent that seats will bo at a largfo premium, if, indeed, they can be had at all. We expect, after tins happy time arrives, to see in the daily papers advertisements of this kind: FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE RE verend Dr. Klirieker, at Hie Little Methuselah Church, on buiiiluy evening, thetitb iimtuut. Thus will the poor have the Gospel preached to them by the seductive means of city cars, at the low price of seven cents; and if they don't go to church now it must be from some other reason than because they can't ride; and our Legislature has now, Mire enough, left them without excuse. We hope the poor people will not neglect this new means of grace, t-veu though, there are no "exchange tickets." Startling Announcement. We have lxn-n warned by the papers in all parts of the country that the present exten sive thaw will likely brinsr with it one of the biggest kinds of freshets; but we were hardly prepared for news like tho following, tele graphed on to our City Fathers from Well ington. What the city myths will do about Jt we don't know: Washington, February 14, 1807. Thomas A. Harlow, Member Select Council: League jsianu nas passed the .Senate. Thanks to Mr; t-aueu. Charles O'Neill. What does this mean ? Has the Immense ice-field that has gone afloat to the oceau carried the Island with it, and up the Potomao, more curious thau all ? What lias become of the iron-clads, and, still worse, the City Ice lioat r Did that pass the Senate, too? Perhaps so, and that is the cuuso for thankfulness to Mr, fatten. DRY GOODS.
