States Forts In a State of Siege. Washington, January 29. The following is the substance of a letter just received from an ollicer at Fort Philip Kearney to a genlleraan in this city: ' "The three post forts, Phil. Kearney, Reno, and Hinitta, are in a state of seige. All the Sioux Indians, including those who committed the atrocities in Minnesota, are in the neighbor hood. The garrison at Fort Reno consists of three companies of Infantry, not full, and one piece of artillery. Pull. Kearney has four pieces of artillery and five companies of infantry, one half effective, and a few mounted men. Fort Hmlth baa two pieces ol artillery, two com panies of infantry, and 28 mounted men amounting in the" airfjrepate to 400 men; so you can perceive tbat these posts are in a state ofsiepe. The mass of the Indians are on the river about fifty miles from this post. Our com munication with Foit Smith is entirety cut off. Some fifteen hundred lodges of Indians are located at that point, including the Blackfeet, the Cbeyennes, and Arrapahops, the whole number amounting to between four and five thousand. "They are well mounted and armed. T'uey have several times attacked the wood trams, and were upon one occasion badly whipped. On Friday, December 21, they made their ap pearance in a small number near the lort, and challenged us to flight. Colonel C'urrinpton shelled them, killing a pony, and diiviner out thirty Indians from their covert. Captain and Brevet-Colonel Fitternian, Captain Brown, and Lieutenant Drummond, were ordered out to protect the wood train, which had been attacked. Captain Fitternian commanded the infantry, Lieutenant Drummond the cavalry, numbering 27 men, and Captain Brown some mounted teamsters and citizens; the whole force amounting to 81 men. About 60 of these were armed with Spencer rifles, and tbe remainder with Springfield muskets. Tbe officers, instead of obeying orders, allowed themselves to be decoyed from tbe position they had been ordered to take, and consequently fell into an ambusb, and were all cruelly murdered. The writer, who is on duty at Fort Kearney, was ordered by Colonel Carriugton to proceed to a point five miles oil', find ascertain u the. wood truin was sate, and then to join the command. After proceeding about three miles he found the tram safe, aud then attempted to join Captain Fitternian, but it being impossible, he immedi ately sent to the fort for reinforcements. Forty men, under a captain, were sent out, and we reached the scene of action just in time to wit ness the murder of tbe last victim. The poor fellows who had thus been wantonly murdered were found piled up in a heap. About fifty of the bodies were brought into the fort."
