At a recent Region IH-il1.0 hlal? I-PKlHlnture n committee of llvo inem bcra of the Moiiho, consisting of Messrs. Jlootl, Dellaven, Qulttloy, (4he;nn nnd Uono jamti, were nppoltiteil to vlait l'tillnilclphln, ivnd make Inquiries Into the propriety of prohibiting locomotives lrom running turouph tho paved Ktrectnand bnllt-np portions of the city, and report ing a bill to that effect to tho Jlouself clrcumiuancp wnrrnnted the same. Thin committee reached the city on Saturday last, and held a preliminary meeting nt t wo o clock P.M. on that duy at Mr. Hood's ofllee. No. 219 R. Sixth street. Mr. Hood acted as Chair man, and a secretary was appointed to talce down all evidence that might lio submitted. J'wo members of the committee, McNsm.Ohcgaa nnd Uonohugh, were absent. As soon as the committee organized for the transaction of business, there being no wit nesses present, a sort of general consultation 'was held as to what the mtxlttx operami of the committee should consist of. It was suggested totnke up the different lines of railroads on 'Which locomotives run into the city inxrriaiim, visit tho localities and confer with tho residents as to the feasibility of the proposed prohibition. II was also suggested that taxpayers and cltl r.ens generally be nottflud that petitions would be received in relation to the mutter and all evidence, pro ami con, would be accepted by the committee in order that tho subject might he fairly and fully ventilated. Mr. uulgloy stated thut lie had already received a number of com munications from citizens urging the prohibi tion of running the locomotives through the streets. Three gentlemen then entered, who expressed a desire to give evidence. The first witness vas Mr. Menko Hlern, who was sworn, and testified as follows: Ilesldos at No. otiO . Kighlh street, ami keeps horses and carriages at the stable of William Ash. on Coat.es street; lias occasion to cross Ninth street, over thelluo of the Oerniantowu and Norristown Hailroud, every day, and considers the running of tho steam enrs through that streot u vory great nuisance; finds himself much Incommoded, and is often in considerable personal danger; horses get frightened every day; has known steam cars to run through tho street where it Is thickly populated at the rate of twenty miles per hour; it is almost impossible for horses and vehicles to travel on Ninth street, above Green, owing to the railroad track and tho coustaut running of steam engines; tho street is not paved between the rails, and a. high curb on cither side of the railroad prevents vehicles from crossing between cross streets; vehicles sometimes are compelled to waltteu nnd fifteen minutes before they cau cross Ninth street on the streets that intersect it, owing to the constant passage of stenm cars; no improve ments are progressing on Ninth street, and pro perty can now be purchased ou the line of tho railroad at tho same price it brought fifteen years ago; the smoke from the locomotives is also very annoying; considers the Germantowu and Norristown Katlroad as it stands at present a decided nuisance, and the depot should be removed at least us far north as Ninth uud Co lumbia avenue. Mr. C. Colket, Tresldent of the Germantowu and Norristown Railroad Company, who was present lu tho interest of his company, ques tioned tlie witness (Mr. Vaughan) regarding the rate of speed at which the cars run through the city, and stated that just enough, speed was ob tained to prevent children front gutting on the cars. In answer to questions put by Mr. Colkert, the witness stated that he was aware that Ninth street was curbed on each side of the railroad track to prevent vehicles from cross ing the tracK between the cross streets, and also, that the streets that intersect the railroad cross the latter ou a level with the same, and also that the Hailroud Company purchased the ground over which the cars run. Mr. Colket then made a statement that the Oermantown and Norristown Itullroud had killed less people during Its existence than many passenger railways have within a few years past. The witness, in answer to another question by Mr. Colkert, us to whether he considered the danger greater with cars drawn through the city with locomotives than with horses, stated that lie considered the stone trains thut caino thundering Into the city, without either steam or horses connected with them, more danger ous than either steam or horse cars. The witness stated that lie owns a house on Ninth street, for which lie receives only twelve dollars per month, and if the same house was on Tenth street, or on Kiglith street, and be tween the humo streets, he could get four hun dred per annum for It. In answer to Mr. Colkert, witness stated that he was aware that Ninth street was taken up, and built on before Eighth or Tenth streets were. There Delng no additional evidence, the meet ing adjourned until next Sulurday afternoon, at the same time and place. Otto Firemen. The water has such a bad taste that we shall soon have to adopt the Chinese resort, and drink nothing hut tea or some other liquid, unless it is rendered purer. The Schuylkill water is petting more and more unwholesome every year. The Delawttre Water Cap, seventy-two geographical miles north of Philadelphia, is, it is stated, seven hundred and fifty feet above the surface of the Delaware at Philadelphia. It is an inexhaustible fountain, and could be made to supply Phila delphia and all other towns and villages be tween these two points with water clear as a crystal. It would require a very sma 1 atuouut oi American ingenuity to accomplish this great rp't. The Councils of the old "city proper" had tbe Bubjcct under consideration ior several years piior to cou-sol Idntioa of bringing water from Uum grent natural fountain. Moue School Houses.
