Jlc reercttcd that, s oiinK man of such sterling Integrity and excellent business quanti tations fhould so soon retire from the varied duties ot commercial lite. In withdrawing to inore quiet scenes, Mr. Kiepel stated that Co onel Utter carried with him the pood winiing of scores Of Irieuds, and assured that irentlemen that his absence from the tibiiitl walks of his busy life would be keenly felt. During the evening a nns.'nifc nt watch and Chain were presented to Colonel Fimer by the employes in the old house. Mr. William M. Hooper, in tendering the handsome testimonial, eaid: Mr. Filter: Our impose in niontlnu hero thia evening is notono of thoughtless lestivity. Woh-vo come to uischargo a duty at once plou-aut and puin lul. Pleasant in the retrospect ot past associations, and ho friendships they havo awakened; and puin. lul, Lecause our relations ot employer and employe have boon severed. It nil or da us pleasure to certilythe tact that, dur ing tho years tl.cso relations havo existed, you have never made an enemy or alienatod a Irl nd. We ca.-mot recall an unkind word or act of yours; nor havo we ever had occasion to distrust a motive, or question tho impartiality of a decision or an act. On the con Tory, your happy blending of urbanity with firmness reconciled tho too olten clashing in terests ot employer and employe It is not ncces. sary, thcrcloro, for mo to assure you. sir, that hero in tins company you have nothing but friends; not those transient ones whose retard is lounded in self mtorost, but triends wurm aud confiding, whoso esteem and afl'ectionato roeard result Irom tho re membrance ol youi many kindly acts, your upritrht dealings, and a thousand courtesies and aiucuiUos ot bnsiness Intercourse. Allow me, itierefore, ns tho instrument and on behalf ol this company of your friends your late employes to presont you this bcautilu' watch aud chain, toeother with this manuscript conta-um? a declaration of our sentiments, and our ngniitires, and with them our best wishes lor your luturc wel fare. Scott, on behalf of Colonel Fiuter, received the watch and chain. lie said: Gentlemen: On behalf of Mr. Fister, allow me to thang jou lor tins tangible evidence vou havo given him ot your ull'ectiou ana esteem. Words are in adequate to express tho emotions which are pro duced by such a manifestation as this. iSo assured, gentlemen, that tho sentiments and good wishes which havo been uttered by your representative on this occasion arc lnartilv appreciated and cirdiaily reciprocated. Jn the leiations which havo existed between Mr. Fister and your-eivoa ho has ever found you true, tried, and trustworthy triends, and as such he ever wishes to remember you. He feels that you, pentlcmoii, have contributed to his prosperity and the success oi hi? mercantile career by your faithful discharge ot duty in your respective spheres. Whiie be uud his copartners have planned, you have executed. For, ailerall, gout emeu, there is a mutual lutordepeiidendonco existing in all classes ol society, and in ail tho relations of life, whether kocial or commercial, so that tho failure of one to perform h s part in any scheme will embarrass and disarrange tho p ans ot others. As weil might we expect a general to obtain a victory without the heroic efforts ol bravo and courageous soldiers, as for a business man to acquire wealth without iLo assistance of eilicicnt and tollable employes. As an employor, Mr. Fister lias always remembered that you were men, and unitoriniy treated you as such. Ho has always made it his aim to remunerate vou liberally for your lubers, knowing that it isnelther just nor honorable to expeot any man's services without a lull eei.lvult nt. lio assured, gent omen, that the happv hours ho and you have spent m Mo. 47 are so intimately blended with his life's history that they can never be erased from bis memory. Together, ho and you have shared in the excite ment, the toil aud lutigue of many a busy season, and as you will miss him, so ho will miss you. as he now retires from active business. Tho beautiful gilts you have been pleased to present to him on this occasion ho will ever prize, not because of so much in trinsic vaiue (which shou d not be over ooked), as on account ol the motives which prompted them. This wa ch how sifiulicaut! recorder of precious mo moots, which, like pearly dewdrops that sparkle on tne grass and are fcised up by tho eiiuiijrht, rpeodily pass trom view and are lost forever, in its every tick he will hear your voicos wishing him health, propponty, and happiness; and this chain will call Bp the reminiscences of the past and the linked bro therhood which selected it as a token of thulr e-tcem. May you al through life bo bound together by tho ties of a Ineudslup and brotherly love as beautiful as these golden links, and as firmly united. In aonomsinn, gentlemen allow me again, on Mr. F'is'or's behalt, to thank you and to give utterance, to the hope that each and every one of you may "So live that, when the summons comes to join The innumerable caravan that movos To that mysterious realm, where each shall tako His chamber in the silei.t halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry slave at night .Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave, J.ike one that draw s the drapery ol his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant ar.am." The company enioyed the entertainment, winch Messrs. J. & W. C.
