Mr. McDevitt. in making tbe motion, said that it was rii;ht anil proper that some suggestion should fee made by this Board, which represents the entire department, lie was in favor of a commisKion, out ho desired that experienced Uien should be placed upon it. ' Mr. Coot, ef the Ilibernla Enphie Co inpany, van ppo:-ed to tbe motion, because he con Hdercu the Board ot Directors the head and liont ot the Fre Department, and Councils as n seeondaiy body. There could bo no better commission than this Board, and if chnusfe are to be made byCo.incils tuc Board should be consulted. Mr. Wray stated that lie had voted in Coun cils lor the ordinance to reorganize the Fire De partment, because he believed it would prevent tbe establishment ot a paid department. Mr. Carrow thought all the power of the Foard had been taken from them, and he could iiot see that any good would result in .the ap pointment of a committee. Mr. Wray said he believed that Councils were willing to grant almost anything for the good of the dupartment that, me companies could unite upon. A delegate moved to amend that the commit tee report the address and plan agreed upon to this Board before sending it to Councils. The amendment was accepted, aud the resolu tion was agreed to. It has ex isted for eight-and-twenty years, aud on Sunday night, with impressive ceremonies, solemnized its anniversary at the Church of the Epiphany, coiner of Fifteenth and Chesuut streets. The Managers' annual report was read, from which it appeared that .out of our 700,000 in habitants, not more than 29,000 have ever aided the work of the Society, and the whole receipts for the year would be insufficient to keep many ot our iamilies, and yet this Society is the ngeacy in this city for collecting means for translating and circulating the Bible in lan guages of heathen nations, ud in making written languages lor such as have none. The sermon on the occasion 'was preached by the Rev. Dr. Newton, rector of the chuich. The text was from Psalms, evil, 20. "He sent His word, and healed them." Those who would (ive the Scriptures to the poor can do so by sub scribing to the lund oi the Philadelphia Bible Society. No one ever aeks it la vain for a copy of the Bible or New Tesrameut.
