8 Leihri from W. Cornell Jrwett , PnitiDW,rnu, Deoerobcr 14, 1866. Coiowei. J. W. Forney !-Bir: In view of my )igb estimation of you m an American states man, I regret jour error In withdrawing as a candidate Tor the Senate, thereby depriving the country of your patriotic and conscientious Im putes in the councils of the nation. You eecm o prefer Representative 9tevens for the Senate. Yon may be right; I think you are wrong. Mr. Blevene la a man of Brent and comprehensive intellect. To my mind, however, be errs in taking an extreme radical position or reconstruction, ft position that may prove as fatal to his future power and historic fame, as baa to If r. Beward hi abandonment of party by Joining the August ropvention movement, and b's late unwise diplomatic move as io Mexico, la sending a national vessel with a Minister, to support a Government repudiated by all nations a step like unto Prance, England, or Rnwia sending at this time a national man-of-war, with an accre ited minister, to support and uphold the southern Confederacy. I think you will admit the special presence and influence of an unaeen band in the present position of Amer ca, upon the verge of a preci pice, yet singularly held up by a radical Con gress, seemingly indispensable to a perfect re generation of government and representation. How singular and marked the passing away, by death, of. all the leading statesmen of the pa?t quarter of a century, with the withdrawal of Southern representation, leaving but few anong that few most marked Sumner in the Senate, Stevens in the House ! You will admit, in the entire range of national history, no country, at any one period, has possessed so few really great men and leading minds as America to-day; yet they exist buried among the people, from the results of the action of corrupt politicians. America ha9 all the essential elements to make her the most powerful and respected of nations ; and when Napoleon shall have parsed away in faded glory from his unholy desertion of Maximilian, and when European powers shall have become power lens from the, at present, discontent of the people of Continental Europe, will prove herself the most united of nations, however to yield to the irresistible decree of national progies9, through a multitude of governments, republican forever in charajterr It is time the people elevate to power men devoted to the nation, not self; men who will regard honor in national action as indispcn aoie as honor in ordinary affairs, securing, con lideuce. I advocate Senator Sumner because of that stamp. I advoeate Hon. Horace Greoley because oi that stamp. 1 advocate jou because ol that stamp. Mr. Sumner bas earned the right to torn position from his honest, consistent, inde pendent, and of late, magnanimous action. Mr. tirecley has earned chat right from his repeated retuaal to take position at the expense of inde pendence ot tlioutrnt and action, manifest in his withdrawal from Weed and Seward; from hi, at all tiuH-6, noble vindication of the constitu tional rights of the South over slavery, yet advocating the freedom of the slave under a remuneration policy, from his pre sent jjenerous policy lor reconstrustiou, and trotn his repeated efforts to secure an honorable peace under the conviction the South witc a portiou of the American Re vnbl.c, in arms lor rightf they deemed just, and not in the position of a foreign nation a, war with ub to overthrow our establisued form of cover:, nient. You have earned that right, not only by your iucreasing lab irs editorially for tne best Interests of voar country, but more especially from the evidence you have given of thicerity'and honesty ol purpose in jour oppo sition to President liuelianan and President Johiion, at a time that, if not done in conformity with your views ot right, would have secured lor you any named public position. I do therefore appeal to you to withdraw your withdrawal if not douc do entreat your Iriends to proceed through your nomination in the ureat work of a legitimate, honest, and patriotic rule, soon to be inausurated by the elevation of General Geary to the Governorship vf 1'eiinejlvania. Wm. Corell Jewett. " KISTORI AS "PHJEDRA." With our disappointment in "Medea" still resh in memory, we were unprepared for the startling and sublime effect produced by Ristori )n the role of "Pbivdrc" last evening. The requirements of the old Greek drains, from which Racine drew this grand old tragedy, axe unsulted to the ncculiar p-entus pos0"- " , . ... .... .... D.. r ...ooaed fcy Ristori. The qualifications wl'.'.ch render her unapproachable in other ro'fes, are precisely those which unfit her for the perfect rendition Of either a "Medea" or a "Phiedra." But if in Thcedra Ristori did net rise to the classic gran deur of Rachel, she gathered the character to her heart, humanized it, and made it natural. The old mythological tragedies of the ancient Greek writers are like a strain ot indescribably mournful music. The dirges of an inexorable Destiny pervades thin. Jhey have not the tangled and oft-recurring light and shades of more moiern composition", and for this very reason, only this singular and isolated genius of a Rachel can truly embody them. Ristori's genius is like a warm painting of real life Rachel's is like Creek sculpture. There is the same difference between Rachel and Ristori as there is between Greek tragedy and the tragedy of Shakespeare. The one is the Classic ideal, the other pure nature. Ristori's acting is not the voice ol the ideal; it is the wild impassioned languaae o trhe heart. In the fourth act of Phtedia, where her guilty passion rises to its highest frenzy, and all the ieart-strlngs, "like wild horse?, pull the heart asunder," no pen can do justice to tke utter abandon of her acting. Love, jealousy, grief, race, despair, and shame in turn seem to possess and convulse the soul, whose throes of agony are terrible to witness. Ristori's exquisite womanhood never fails to keep before us the agonizing sense of shame, never cast aside by the unhappy "Phaedra," even In the avowal of her guilty love lor "Hip polytus." With this, as with a delicate veil, she seeks' to soften to our 'gaze all that might disgust in the exhibition of the wild unlawful passions of the wife of "Theseus.1' Ristori's Thtt!dra" abhors herself. Then comes the gloomy fatality pervading all the Greek plays. She is doomed a victim of the gods. She cannot struggle against fate, but dies in all the despairing agony of a soul-devouring re morse. ' Ristori's volca is a marvel of sweetness and power in the very climax of passion, never harsh or overstrained, Its tones, round, rich, deep, and tender, conveyed to our ears in that most musical of all languages the Italian- possess a haunting melody never to be forgotten. DESFERATE ATTEMPT TO ROB THE KENT NATIONAL BANK, K E N T, OHIO . FAILURE OF Til 15 BURGLAWS. THEY COTJLD NOT DRILL THE SPIEGEL EISEN. " On Saturday evening-, tie td of Kovember, our bank was entered by burglars. The office of the banc oelng wlthoutgan oompant, theyiad undisputed possession, and I bare no doabt employed their time uninter ruptedly till morning, in efforts to reach the treasure ot the bank. But thinks to the protection afforded bv one of your Burglar-Proof Sates, which on this oocaslon pioied to be Impregnable, they were foiled. The outside or fire-proof door of the 8afe was drilled and blown open. They then commenced on the our-giar-proof, and after knteklng off the dial of the look, and knob that throws the bolts, ther attempted to dilve the lock off, but without success; they also used wedges and a heavy sledge, but failed in all. They left behind them a large assortment of tools, consisting of two crowbars, a heavy sledge, wooden mallet, two steel wedges, and a variety ot chisels. Having occasion to be at my office (which Is eon. neoted with the bank) at about II o'clock A. The necessities ot the case were plainly presentel, and we lost no ' lme In despatching sn a gen' to Cleveland to procure a proper per-on to open our safe. Calling at jour agency, no suitable pers nwai found.
