A New Way to Protect Safos. A new English invention is described a a "safe-protector." It consists of a smHll apparatus, fitted in the upper corner of a safe nud near the door, per forming the functions of a pas-meter. An ordi nary pipe affords a supply ot pas which passes through Oie protector iuto a large iron pipe running from the safe to a lamp in the street. This iron pipe is an air-chamber, and serve to contain a gas-pipe, which i3 preserved by means of a drill-proof coil of steel wire. The lamp U Intended to be of unusual appearance, aud to give a very brilliant lijrht. The mechanism f the protector Is strong, but even a blow on the top of the safe will diiooneet the supply of gas and put out the lieht. The same result would be effected by any tampering with the door or the plf-es. In larcre cities, where sates are numerous within small areas, it is contem plated to employ a special watchman, who would, of course, Immediately detect the ab sence of the external signal. A Good Charity. There is in England a charity known as the '"Patriotic Fund," for the benebt of the families of soldiers who have fallen in battle. The last report shows that nine thousand widows and orphans are placed on the books, and there are in receipt of relief at this time three thousand four hundred widows and three thouand children, of whom one thousand are maintained and educated in boarding institutions. The total amount of subscriptions to December, 1865, was 1,400,201. The anuuni expenditure is i.' 80,000. i Dry Chinamen While Western Europe has been drenched with rain throughout the sum " mer, it appears from the latest accounts that they have been eleven months without either " rain or snow at Pels in. This is in China a greut public calamity, which is sought to be averted by fasting, prayer, and expiatory ceremonies. In the summer ot 1864 the drought was so great that the Emperor himself made a vow to "rec tify his conduct and be more anxious lor the welfare of his people." Are Stimulants Necessary 1 The "model vil lage of 8corton,'! situated between' Lancaster and Preston, Eu eland, which contains neither a nubile house nor a beer shot), has iust been subjected to a tearful scourge in the shape of typhus fever. During the past nine or ten .weeks the epidemic has bo?n raging with more : or less virulence. There have been eighty cases and ten deaths. Eomantio Isaac Taylor emigrated from Eng land to Cleveland at an early age. He com menced by blacking boots, got a small farm in Michigan, engaged in the Wisconsin lumber trado, and became rich. From his own expe sionoe oi orphanhood, he formed the determina tion to found an orphan asylum. This his widow has lust done. The endowment is nearly 150,000. The asylum is to be situated at ttacine. The streets have been widened snd straightened, squares laid out, and the section generally much improved. The "Round Table." A recent number of this journal announced the retirement of Mr. Sweet ser from its management Some other changes have been made. We hear tnat Mr. II. II. Stod dard, who has excellently done a great amount of work for tbe hound Table, in its literary de partment, has no longer any connection with that journal. The entries at he eieven metropolitan hospitals in Lmdon are this year above preceding sessions. In the October besiion three hundred and sixty-two new students registered their names at the Royal College of Surgeons, making a totitl of one thousand and twenty-beven now pursuing medical studies. The "Industry" of a Brigand Lefterl, the famous brigand, has made his fortune, and now desires to make his peace with the Porte. He has proposed to quit the country, if he may be allowed to do so, with his "property," taking refuge in Hellas, where he proposes to enjoy the fruits of bis industry as a good sub)ect of King George. - Charitable Bequests. Pat terson, of Boston, made the following bequests to benevolent institutions: To the Baltimore Omban Asylum. $5i00: to the Humane Imnar- tial Bociety and Aged Women's Home, $5000; to the Manual Labor School for Indigent Hoys, $.1000; to the Maryland Tract Society, $5000; to the Aged Men's Home, $5000. "Sabbatarianism." Most of the clergymen In Norwich, Ct. have! signed a circular protesting against the practice or having funerals on the Sabbath, believing that it is an evil, Inasmuch as it Involves much servile work, and, there fore, when not necessary, it is a clear violation of the fourth commandment, keeping from the house of God those who might otherwise attend. A Monument The Journal, des Elrangers of Rice says that a monument Is to be erected, by subscription, to the memory of the Czarewltch Nicholas, outside tbe pate of Villa Bermond, where he died. The design is the broken f-haft of a column, at the base of which lie the impe rial crown and sceptre. Immense Profit on Beer.
