Japanesi: in the City. tVe had quile an Interesting arrival In oi:r city recently. Two younir olliceis belontrlni; to the house hold of the Prince ot Hiiro, Japan, arrived here from New York, where they c.ime in on Tnepday on the barque M'aee. They purpose remaining for five years, in order to acquire a thoroueh knowledge of naval science, and to acquaint themselves with the manners and customs of the "ereat republic." It is rather a remarkable fact that, though the Japanese are anxious to raise a navy, to be built Dy their own people and n their own shipyards, yet the Tycoon is reluctant iu permitting the youth ot the country to go abroad aud learn the requisite arts tor enabling her to do so. These yonnn gentlemen, who are the sons of come feudal prince, were obliped to leave their country surreptitiously, as the Tycoon had tor bidden them to depart without his express per mission. They are brothers, and rejoice iu the rather musical names of Numa Caw; and Sahclda, and are extremely courteous and pleas ing In their manners. Among the curiosities exhibited by them to their many visitors were a pair ot two handed swords, made of a very fine steel and a? sharp as razors. These swords were heirlooms, and had been in their family tor lour hundred years. . They .stated that in Japan a connoisseur could tell the ape of a weapon by merely looking at it. This is a piece ot knowledge that our most eminent antiquarians are not possessed ot. The hari-kari sword was another article; of curiosity, which they took particular pleasure to exhibit. It Is used lor ihe purpose of suicide; lor when a Japanese official is reprimanded by his supe riors, he considers it imperative to kill himself, which he does by drawing this sharp, weapon transversely across his bowels. Many others among their countrymen are anxious to see the mysterious ''barbarians" they deem the outside world. Aii for the Academy of Natural Sciences. An appeal is made to the people of Philadelphia by the Building Fund Committee ot the Academy of Natural Scieuce, which should meet with prompt attention. The insti tution is one which commends itsclt to every public-spirited citizen. Bemg'impressed with a pioper wjise ot their oblieations to those wno have contributed so liberally to the treasury ot the Academy, tho Directors have determined to secure a builoing which shall be worthy of the purposes ot the donors nud the objects of the institution. To attain this, it is necessary to raise one hundred thousand dollars, for the purchase of the ground and the erection of a suitable building. Two-thirds of the amount have been subscribed,, but If the remainder is net secured bv the first of the coming year, the enterprise will tail. Surely the sum wanting should be raised at once among our men of science and our wealthy citizens, who take so much interest in our public institutions. A ItEMABKABLK CASK OF BAD MEMORY.
