New York, Novcmliei 20.-TUe elec ion is meHy ovir bclore tile political quidnunc oem vo gibcubs tbo Peiiatorml uunsuon. Anioinr : ne candidates arc General Martlndalo, Scnai.,r l-olpr, Ira Harris, ilie pre-n tt .ucum-Df-U. anl the editor oi the New York mbvne. luotipb. I have numcd him last, Horace ureeiej w the loretiiosl picture on the Senatorial r-anva-. Since the celebrated tirra of Weed, reward, and Uieeley dissolved political puriner smp, owiua to the aissatlf-tactiou of the honest partner m that hrm, Horace Urecley, it has Leen commonly supposed thut Mr. Ureulcy had no chance whatever lor ollice in New ?u And nothing is more certain than Hint be never asked for auv otiice in the Rilt ot the people. Anl I am not sure that he had not ceased toespect ollice; lor the writer of this well remembers, when diulii-r at Delmonlco'a with him, on the everjinir ol the Vid ot last February, that the philosopher of the 'Jnbune distinctly declared that the only aspirations he had left for political prcierruenl mould be lully gratified by a seat as delegate in the approaching Constitutional Convention lor ew York. And in the Tribune of yesterday Horace (ireeley, in a characteristio letter, declares that no man is authorized to "bore or buttonhole" any ctoer man ia advocating hi claims to a seat In the Senate. This is in per fect accord with Mr. Greeley's whole political course. ThPie b a naivete about him which is per fectly charming, whan it is remembered that the beet part ot his life has beeu spent in the strifes una rivalries of New York politics, of which William H. Seward and Henry J. Ray mond have been shlninir lierhts. Apropos of the 22d ol February, I distinctly remember Mr. Greeley's prediction that notmng was more certain than thedeleat. ot theAndrew-Johnon-Seward coalition, which for the first time stalked before the public on the evening of that memorable day when Andrew Johnson "spoke h s piece," in whiclt he dignified Tuad. Stevens and Charles Sumner by calling them "traitors at the other end of the line." And on the Fame evening Mr. Seward, at the Cooper Institute, reiterated his prediction that some Cabinet Ministers, and even the President, jnight be washed overboard, but that the ship ol state would be saved. The venerable Secre tary was right. At least one President und on Secretary of State have been washed overboard, and never did the ship of siate eo bravely Haunt the Stars and htripes at the musthead, or more gallantly breast the waves as we near that port where liberty hhall be universal where equal laws shall exist side by side with equal rights; and, as Tennyson says: "1'ure law commcasures perfect freedom." j But we will return to our mutt in. Greeley ought to be Senator. No man nas. since the dsys of the Fathers, been truer to an idea and that idea embracing the very foundation-stones of therepublic than Horace Greeley. His battle against the South has alwajs been a tight for the rights of the many against the tyranny of the few. Nothing can prevent Mr. Greelev's election. unless the cry should be raised that tho West is entitled to the Senator as against the Eapt the old cry of political selfishness, with the faintest foundatioa possible in equity. In times like these we want our great men in the National Council, to take the place of those "Simple great ones '' Gone, forever and forever by." What difference doe it make if Mr, Greeley happens t live in Westchester county, anil Senator Harris comes trom the West, and the West gives the big majorities? Let it be re membered that Mr. Gieeley belongs to that class of statesmen who were ' born for the uni verse, and who never did give up for a party what was "meant tor mankind." It Horace Greeley is the man tor the pluce (and an honest man I think he is), in Heaven's name put him there, in spite ot the vulvar bargaining of political sel nshnebs, or the clamor of Wall street! Even Raymond comes out to-day with a most fracetul mention of Horace Greeley's claims tor he Senate, a very proper return lor Mr. (Jreelev's welcome, when Mr. Raymond ceased ito eut "the husks which the Democratic swine lrllrl ent." I met vesterdav. Mator-General Francis W. Barlow, Secretary ol State ot New York. He is a young gentleman ot thirty winters, a brave soldier ana a nigh-tonea statesman. He won his spurs at Antiwtam, and came home to win political laurels in the campaign against Gene ral Biocum. General Barlow had lust returned from a day or to with your excellent Mayor, Mr. McMichael, and his son. He thinks your Minor (who I believe is now at home) is a man of rare culture and of most genial manners. S. M. J. The Misfortunes oi Three Ballet Girls. To the Editor of the New York Uernfd: Knowing the interest you take in all that con cerns tho drama and its professors, no matter sow humblp, we venture to address you on a .natter that atlects us nearly. At present we are but humble members ot the theatre, but even we have our rights, which we believe to have been deliberately invaded. We are three English girls, members of tue corps de battel at Wheatley's theatre, and are at present appear ing n'ghllv in the b diet. In the early part of the present year Messrs. Jarrett and Palmer, who wre then in England, invited us to proceed to New York, and ottered us respectively salaries of 3 per week. On iLakiug out our agreement, knowing our utter (ignorance ot the true value of American money, instead ot inserting "three pounds sterling," as uiey oiBiincuy pruuuseu lib, mey msertea tne amount $15, which is the sum we are now re ceiving weekly; and which, in spite of repeated and eavnest solicitation i.they insist on paying us. On our arrival in New York we found that it takes $7 In greenbacks to make an English sovereign, and although we are in justice and honor bound to receive $21 (having solemnly been promised the value of 3), we continue to receive but $15. It is a well-known tact ihr. Messrs. Jarrett and Palmer are clearing a large sum weekly by their share in tho theatre, aud it seems a hard case that we three girls, with no other resources to depend on save aud except the salary produced by our daucimr. fthnmrl each have to lose weekly $G, and we think it most un wormy on tne part ot Jarrett and Palmer to delude young girls from their homes in England by false representations as to the relative value of money. The $15 we arenow receiving amount to about 2 4s., a very little more than our salary was In England, and it is not imeiy that we would ciossthe ocean aud make a journey of over three thousand miles to better ourselves a few shillings per week. When Jarrett and Palmer engaged us they knew perfectly well that live dollars aia not represent a sovereign, but they repeatedly assured us that the two amounts were equal. At the present rate of livlnginNew York, what with biuh rents and the desrness ot provisions, this ditlerence of i a week would purchase us many uuiu uuununa. as io saving anything out of our present salary, that is entire! v out of the question. In making their engagements Jarrett and Paimerwere careful not to intorm us that tne cost oi iivin? was dearer in New York than in England. Here again, they beue-titt-d by our inexperience. - , . y . We are very sorry. Mr. Editor, to have to be compelled to appeal to the iwblic press to make our voices beard; but will you argue our claim with the Crook-ed speculators of tbe corps de aliet f Winter is fast approaching. The extra inoney to which we are entitled would purchase us some warm clothing, of which we are sorely In need. As we said before, we depend wholly and solely upon our salaries; and it you can ware us tue humiliation of, having to pledge cnir little finery and bits of jewelry that we broueht with us from EnglunJ, we shall indeed Jeel grateful. ' Jarrett ana rainier, si-cuf miynir prosperity, may reply Ibat they are fulfilling their contract hj paying us $15 a week. Our reply is that we THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY. wr? told by those men that $15 was the same sis C3. We now know that our Just salary is $21 currency, and with nothing short ot this will we be coutent.
