Between 6 and 7 o'clock last evening, a man named James Lukens enteredAhe residence of Mrs. Lindsay, No. 1728 f" - street, and made an attack with a knile upon John Smith, inflicting a slight wound upon his head. The woman threw her selt between the parties 10 prevent the fighting, when Lukens attacked her and drew the knife across her throat, making a severe gash about two inches in length. The wound is not con sidered daDgerous. Mrs. Lindsay states that Lukens threatened to take her lite several times previously. Her husband is now absent in Vir ginia. Lukens escaped. Applications for Seweks Approved. A stated meeting of tbe Board was held yes terday. Report of the Finance Committee. The Finance Committee of Councils was in session last evening, and agreed upon reporting an advance making an additional appropriation of $12,600 to the Board of Directors ot the County Prison for the current year. On Thursday last, a communication from the Board asking for the appropriation was read in Common Councd. and relerred to the above committee. The Board state that, owing to the great number of pri soners in the institution, andjthe high price of flour and other articles of produce, it is neces sary that the appropriation should be made. Drowned Himself. Francis Bow, a laborer, titty years old, employed at the brewery ot Messrs. Massey, Collins & Co., committed suicide j esterday by drowning himself in a well at the brewery. An inquest was held on the body, but the investigation failed to show any cause for the self-destruction. A verdict of "suicide by drowning" was rendered. Fines and Penalties. The following Committing Magistrates are the only ones that have paid to the City Treasurer the tines and penalties received during the month of October: James Massey, $52; Lewis Codbou, $43; and John Clouds, $44; making a total of $139. No More Reports. The Board of Health have concluded not to furnish for publication the cases of cholera reported daily, as said re ports do not acree with the record of deaths reported weekly by the Registrar.
