STATISTICS OF WRECKS.
Thp statistical committee of Lloyd's in Lon
don have lust published an analysis of nhinnins
casualties reported in Lloyd's Lst for the six
months pndinn June 30 lasu The Comriiitte
believe that thh statement, embracing m it
does the casualties reported from all parts of
the world, is the most comprehensive ever pub
lished, aud they trust it mav prove Intcestintr
as an effort to obtain and tabulate information
which will, they cannot but think, be ultimately
found of great utility. Th. return Rives the
number lost both ot shins and steamers m eacn
month. The general result is a total of 54..S
vessels which have beetwrccked or injureH,
4949 beinjr ships and fidiTeteaiiicrs. The total
number of casualties is in excess of the number
of vessels, being C1H8. As to the nature of the
accidents, we b arn that 07 ves-els are mi-siiiEr :
186 have been abandoned (10 bninjr afterwards
recovered); 974 in collision, in which ;2 were
funk; 259 sank from causes other th-in collision;
1676 stranded, of which 891 cot olT, 512 not pot
off, and the subseqnem fate of 271 not reported;
31 were captured; 10 taken by pirates; Hj de
stroyed.! bv lire; 120 dismastPd' or disabled; 86
where there was jetfison of carjro under deck;
101 jettison of decklond, or washing overboard;
691 leaky; 4G8 loss of anchors or chains; 10t,
machinery daroaped, or short of coals; 193
mutiny and casualty to crew; 11G3 ships damaged ;
and 22 waterlogged. Tiio total looses were 1037;
constructive lo-scs, 148; great damage, 644;
minor daniaee, 2459; raised alter sinking, 28;
not damaged, or results unknown, 1139. The
results to the cargo were: All lost, 89t; part
lost, 345; all saved, 41; forwarded, 45; heated,
15; shifted, 79; otherwise datuaced, 132. The
cases of salvage tervice were 7r9. The total
lives lost, as reported, were 1400, but the com
mittee remark that the returns on this head are.
most imperfect, and the actual number would
be greatly in excess of the number given. "
The Industriel Alsacien informs us that a
terrible accident occurred a short timo occ lu
a menagerie, at the l''alr of Tivoli. The new
Dompteur, or wild beast tamer, to whom the
animals were not accustomed, aner nuving
entered a cape, in which were a hyena and a
wolf, and made them perform all kinds of feats,
entered the cage of the panther. After having
made the savatre animal walk several times
around its den, the Dompteur struck it a slight
blow with his whip ou the head; the enrage i
panther flew at him and seized him by the
throat. The I)ompteur then dropped his whip,
and throwing his arms around the beast, lorced
it to let him go. both fell to the ground.-With
the agility ot a cat the panther threw itself on
the unfortunate man and lastened its terth in
his neck. The keepers, armed with iron bars,
ran to his assistance, but were unable to make
the panther release its hold. The mistress of
the establishment then ordered a bucket of cold
water to be thrown over the wild beast, which
then left the wounded man, who lay motionless
on the floor of the den. but before he could be
removed the savage animal at'uiu flew at its
""victim. A second bucket ot water, however,
R?u1n forced it to let go, pnd the unfortunate
Xtomr'teur was removed troin the cae and taken
yo the hospital in a deplorable couditiou. It is,
hfewever, hoped that his life will be preserved.

pjreseut during the time that this dreadful scene
was tasmg piace.
