The Distracted "Almanack de Gotha." Ml the Tear Bound has the following: There Is consternation in the editorial room atOotha. be Almanack for 1867 was almost ready to be launched forth into the world when, lot like the simoom, Prussia sweeps over the Horth of Germany, and kings and princes are arris away by the blast like so many reds; even ihe stalwart tree of Austria has list many f its branches, blown away by the stor;a, taoacn the stem still stands firm on its deep-set roots. The hurricane has lulled, the treaty or Prairie calms for a time the troubled elements, diplomacy has done its work. .Hut It is a much easier task to oitfn a treaty and exchange rati fications thnn to rewrite a compendium liKe the jumanacn ae wowa. me wuuic uamu tlonierteration Is extinguished, and Franklort, the seat of the Diet, annexed; consequently the thirty-two Stales, including tbe H arise towns, aiuet be utruck out of the Almanack, and the North German Confederation above the Main in eer ted Instead. As regards the embryo Co mode ration et the Southern States, all is cliaosjlhen Austria baa lost Venetia, Denmark has lost the Duchies, and, worst ot all, no one knows whether tbe lew remaining ninepins will not be bowled down by the strong arm ot a Bismarck or of aJNapoleon. It is easier to shoot a lion with a single bullet than to exterminate a nest of waips. Saxony Is not yet annexed, and may remnin intact In the Almanarh of 18U7; but Hanover, Nassau, Hcsse-Cassel, Darmstadt, and otbers must all have a pen struck through them, and added to Prussia. I rusMa is luce tbe devil fish described by Victor Hugo in his "Travail leurs de la Jler." It holds in its stranding grip all the petty princes in Germony. We are in October; the continental arrangements are by no means settled, and the Almanack must ap pear on the 1st of January. We have good rea son lor flaying, again, that consternation pre vails in the editor's room at Gotha, A Prison Outbreak About Tobacco. The Toulon journals give accounts ot a serious outbreak among the youthful convicts coufiuedin a peni tentiary in the lie de Levant. A leeling ot dis satislaction was expressed among the convicts that ttiey were not allowed longer periods of recreation and permission t smoke tobacco. The eon.Tession demanded being refused, the rntlians overpowered the warders, seized the director of the establishment and thrust him into a cell, plundered ihe stores of the estab lishment, aud set tire to large quantities of petroleum and other inflammable materials which they found in the cellars. A coastguard eigne man succeeded in rearming the director, but at the risk ot his own life, for he was caught by the convicts, who revenged themselves by casting him into a deep ditch, where he lay for a long time with a broken leg. Upon tbe news of the outbreak reaching Toulon, a strong; mili tary lorce was despatched, which speedily re stored a certain dperee of order, but tbe'peni teutmry buildings were almost entirely de stroyed, and fourteen ot its inmates were lound to have perished in the flames. The principal leaders of the insurrection are nald to be nearly all Corsicmis, and none more than sixteen years Of age. Death of Surgeon C. S. Tripler. U. S. A We regret to see the announcement that Brigadier General C. K Tnptar, Surgeon U. S. A., died at Cincinnati ou the 20th instant, of cancer, at the ate of sixty years. He was born in New York, In 18U6, aud was r graduate ot tbe College ot Phjsicians and Surgeous. On General McClel lau's accession to the eommand of tne Army ot the Potomac. Dr. Tnpler was appointed Medical Director, and at ihe time of bis death was Medi cal Director of the Department ol the Ohio. Dr. Tripler was an army officer of the old school, often petulant and peppery in his manner, but having a true warm heart beneath his gruff out side. Ia his profession he was a hard student and enthusiast, being, in that, something of an exception to many of his colleagues in the regular service. He was so universally known in "the old army" that there will be mousands to mourn his loss. The Helmets of the London Fire Brigade. Tbe members ot the Fire Brigade in London have their heads protected by anew helmet, which is thus described: "Tho helmets vary in weight from two pounds two ounces to two pounds fliteen ounces, and ar in appearance similar to those worn by tbe Dragoon Guards when on state duty. They have each a comb varying In heieht irom three to five inches as a protection against falling bricks, etc. At the side of tbe comb are fiery dragons, with illustrations of the hose, stand cocks, axes, and other implements "waed. at Bres, the lower part of the helmet bear ing the !:!-iera 'M, F.
