Meeting of the Moya urn sing Soup
Bocibty. There was a vers Interesting; met-titi
tr the contributor of the Mojsme iimidb rt-mp

heads or cabbage, aod 80 bushels of turnips.
During the season 4454 lbs. of bread were dis
tributed, besides 4200 Tbs. of Indian meal. The
report states that Ihere was a contlnmd 1 derrmnd
upon the Managers which they were unable
lolly to supply, owing to the want of Increased
facilities In the manuiactnre of soup. The fol
lowing officers were elected: President, Robert
MULenJ!.N0, 637 pJ,ne 8trcet! Vice-President,
Hugh Stevenson, No. 1340 Lombard street
becretary, J. E. Harper, No. 608 South Ninth
etreet; Treasurer, Cellms West, No. 302 South
Second street. The above-named Bentlemen.
with the following, form the Board of Managers:
-Johnl'eirco. T.E. Harper, James M. Cooper,
M. L. Burr, Hugh McConnelJ, William Baraett,
Benjamin Bickert on. and John A. Shermer.
Disaster at Sea. A JVew Bedfjrd briar,
the Mary A. Rted, arrived at this port yester
day in a disabled condition, having passed
thronph a severe storm. The captain reports
that when forty-three days out from 8t. An
drew's, with a load of railroad sleepers, expe
rienced a huiricane on the 4th inst., at 3 P. M..
in lat. 30 N., long. 72 W.. which lasted for up
wards of two das. While lying to, under bare
poles, was thrown on her beam ends, and deck
load hove overboard, and soon atter leaked at
th rare of twelve hundred strokes per hour. At
II A. M. cut away the loretopujast, which car
ried the maintopmast n 1th it, in consequence
of the sea running tremendously high. At 1 P.
M. the gale moderated, which enabled us to
make for the coa6t. 14th inst., lat. 37'10, long.
74 41, saw a large ship, dismasted, showing Eng
lish colors, and appeared to be in ballast trim,
painted black, with a narrow white streak,
Mobe Whisky Fbatjds. Neill Brown bad
a hearing before United States Commissioner
Smith yesterday, on the charge of being con
cerned in the illegal distillation of whisky. De
fendant was anested on the 15th of October by
Officer James McClure, on the Ridire avenue, at
the Laurel Hill toll-gate. He and another were
In a covered wagon, which was found to contain
one lull barrel of whisky, and a barrel partially
full. Neither of them had the inspection marks
upon them. Neill Brown, upon being taken
belore Commissioner Smith, represented that his
child was very sick, and he was permitted to go
at large on his own recognizance, promising to
return the next day. He did not lultil his pro
mise, and be was alterwurds arrested bv Deputy
Marshal Godwin, on the testimony of OlUctr
McClure, as previously given. He was held lor
trial.
A Final Oeabing, Jamea QardeU had a
hearing at the Central Station yetterday on the
charge of being concerned in the violent assault
and battery on Officer Walsh, of the Fifth Dis
trict, which was committed on election day, at
Twenty-second and Cathatine streets. The
officer was unable to appear and testify belore
yesterday, and he is yet suffering from the
etiects of the beating he received. HetesttHed
that there was a party ef eignteen or twenty at
the election polls who did not belong there,
and a difficulty occurring, he made an arrest.
He was then tripped down, and struck with
billies and steel knuckles. Defendant, he said
was the man who tripped him down. He was
held in $3500 bail for Lis appearance at Court.
Jail-Bbeakeeb. A rather neat operation
in the "Jack Sheppard" style was perpetrated
at the County Prison recently. Two of the
prisoners on the convict side made their escape
by cutting through the roof, yetting out upon
it, and lowering themselves down by means of
a rope made ot bed-clothing. This is the third
or fourth escape from the prison in the manner
described. In order to accomplish it, bricks in
the arched ceiling have to be removed. This is
done by picking the mortar from the Joints
between the bricks. As there is an officer sta
tioned in the corridor, whose duty it is to look
into the cells at stated periods, it seems almost
incredible that the work could have been done
without attracting his attention. One of the
fugitives was serving out a four years' term.
Anoiheb Fenian Meeting. A meeting
of Centres of the City Circles (Fenian organiza
tions) was held last evening, at Filth and Prune
street, to hear the report ot Colonel Dunn, Cap
tain Dougherty, and Captain MeDermott as to
the staie of Keulanism in Ireland. These gen
tlemen have been there, and were prepared to
fpeak lrom actual observation. Thy repre
sented tbe condition of things to be most favor
able, and gave many particulars which it would
not be proper to make public at this time. A
resolution was unanimously passed endorsing
Prebident Stephens.
"The Teab of Jubilee Has Come." A
meeting, in commemoration ot the centennial
jubilee, was held last evening at the Thirty
eighth Street Methodic Episcopal Church,
Mantua. During the evening addresses were
made by Bishop Simpson, Rev. Dr. Nadal, and
Rev. J. Dickerson. Tbe occasion was one ot
unusual interest, and will be long remembered,
by all who were present, with feelings of
pleasure.
A Cold Swim. The results of "not look
ing before you leap" were plainly shoivn forth
by an accident that nearly proved fatal at tbe
Market street ferry la9t night. Dr. 8. A. Cole,
of Baltimore, In attempting to jump from the
slip to the boat, made a slip and slipped into
the water. His feet actually touched thu planks
of the boat when be jumped. He was rescued
alter he had sunk the second time by a police
officer.
A Tebbiblk Accident. John Poddy,
nineteen years old, whllu at work yesterday, m
Short, Tajlor & Co.'s cotton mill, in West Phila
delphia, had his arm caught in the cardiug
machine, aud the flesh was torn from the
bone. He was tukea to the Hospital, where
amputation of the injured liino was thought
necesf-ary.
Fibe Last Evening. Last evening a Are
oroKe oui in ine mud storv or a building at the
southwest corner of Kitrhteenth aod Wallace
, streets, occupied by Meeara. Lewis & brother,
grocers. It originated among some pnper and
ciaars, and the damage by tire and water is
about $300, w hich is fully covered byiusurance.
A Stbay Waif. 1 be body ol a new-born
. infant was found iloatinz in the river Schuylkill,
at Kairmotint, yesterday afternoon. The Coro
ner held an inquest on the body at the Fif
teenth Ward Station House, the jury render
