The war expenses of the first qunrter were $165,000,000; during the last quar ter they had dwindled to $12,000,000. Thu ex penditures of the War Department during the coming year would be over $240,000,000," less than that of the past year, were it not for the Equalization Bounties bill. As compared with the fiscal year ending June 30, 1865, we find In the past year an increase of receipts from Internal Revenue of one hundred millions of dollars, and ot customs of ninety-live millions; while there has been a diminution of expenses for war of over seven hundred and fifty millions, and for the Navy of eiehty millions. The year ending December 31, 1865, showed a deficiency of six nuDdred and nineteen millions of dollars; six months after that time, tbe year ending June 30, 1806, showed an excess of re ceipts over expenditures of nearly thirty-seven millions ot dollars. A PHILOLOGICAL JOKER. A GUe?r Ij&mDhlpt. Tina DrinaDV.il Irk T rrAmn under the title of "My Owa PhUoloy. Tbe author's name la A. Tudor the publishers, Trub ner & Co. The Euglish Journafa profess to be tn doubt whether the writer la ia earnest or not: but the impression seems to be that he is a capital loker. His philological disquisitions are certainly his "own" no one else will claim tbera, lew will believe in them, but everybody will laugh at them. For instance, he aaysi We learn trom the Bible that at one time one lanciiuce pervaded the earth; granting thw. WA are free to look into any country we choose lor the meaning of any particular sound."., The name Adam he conceives to have been a sort of titular designation given to a race of early po iPntRtea: and "Versteeen savs that the English Saxon was spoken by Adam," so that "certainly we find many words In plain English that were In use at the time of Adam." The lruit eaten by Eve was tbe auanas or pine, and therefore Anas and rinut were names given to Adam and Eve. Anas is also the name ornithological science elves o the genus of which swans, geete, and ducks are members; consequently a swan is a symbol of Anas, or Adam. Adam took some star as a "sign' of nht family, and sign and cygnus (a swan) are evideutly identical. "Ur" is a fersian wora bikuiijius mui, uu m-nuuo, the man Anas, is obviously Adam. Having thus disposed of Adam, he takes up Eve. Tbe serpent, be says, was called "ob" in some Eastern language; therefore, as Kve talked to him, she was subjected to "ob loquy," or the reproach of serpent talk. "Woo" is another Eastern term for a serpent, and the serpent woo-ed" Eve. Adam, too, ia Identical with Jupiter.' Pluto, PerseuBj Janus, Mn us, Zoroas ter, and others, Just as Eve was Asleria, Astarte, Venus. Proserpine, Bemiramis, and tne Queen of Bheba. At Adam adopted a star as his sign, be was ot course named Astrea, the word mean ing a star: and evidently Eve, his wile, adopted the feminine form of the name, Astoria. By altering a few inconvenient letters, Zoroaster and Adam are proved to be the same; and "Sir 21. Bawllnson says that Zoroaster's sister was Asterla, and it.ts easy (I to see that Asterta was T.ve, in tbls way, Eva-Anas, Kvanus, Venus, JSwAstre, Vesta; here, by tuneful chromatic intervals, one nam glides into another, and makes it plain that Eve and Astena are one." More than this: Mr. Tudor adopts a sort of Darwinian theory, by which an oyster is de, veloped Into woman, thus: "Eve, Eve-Astre Fostre, oyster. If confirmation is needed, did not tbe ancients give the scallop- hell to Venus, and has it not been shown tbai Eve and Venus are the samef and is not scallop a sort of oyster T" lie then toins his thoughts to the spirit of evil: "The first of flsnres and the first of characters .Adam may be called. Shall we do Eve the Jus tice to say tbat In her estimation he Mood 'A No. ),' and tbat he was first in her anection notwithstanding her seduction by tbe serpent f If this were The case the serpent rould have bctn only second to Adam, It he had anyjlace in her aflection at all. Granting him the second place, and giving bim a number, the obvious number tor him Is No. 2, the 'double' of No. 1. This was undoubtedly a number of the trans gressor, as Ma, 2 is occasionally expressed by the word deuce, and deuee Is a genteel name lor the devil. And tbe figure oi No. 2 Is un questionably a figure of the 'serpent. I have seen the cobra cnpcllo, or hooded snake, sitting la that position." Leaving tbe human race and the devil, the writer points his facetious pen towards the animal creation, and tells us that bees talk Irish: "Architects and mathematicians these prolific insects axe allowed to be, but they are not generally spoke of as linguists; nevertheless they can speak, at least just as much as an angry Frenchman wishes to sneak, namely, 'two words.' A couple of days before the swarm issues from the hive, let the 'bee-master' listed attentively to the voice within, and his Hooith foig.' 'Hooitb folg' 'Hooitn totg. TT 111 VO LI HV TTWIUU) fiuiu,J WlVlllinttUt 'Hooith folg.' It is tbe voice of tbe queen, giving the route to the emigrants. 'B-j off!' 'be off I' she cries, if not in plain English, in very distinct Irish, 'Hooith toig' be off !" These are fair specimens of the witticisms of the author, whose jokes have puzzled the Eng lish newspapers. AUCTION SALES. B SCOTT, JR., AUCTIONEER, .Bo. 1020 CHESNUT 8TKK&T. US CAKD.
