The Committee on Permanent Organization reported the following as officer of the Conven tion: President General Albright. Vice-Presidents Rev. Dr. Cook, Dr. A. W. Wright, Iiev. J. Dickerson, O. M. Bru maker, Enq., Kev. A. Wal lace, John Shalicrots, Eoq., Rev. J. D. Curtis F. A, Ellis, Esq., Rev. II. A. Cleveland, T. O. Ajres, Esq., Rev. W. Rink, R. F. Thompson. Esq. Secretaries Rev. K. H. I'attison, Rev. .1. S. J. McCounell, J. E. Salter, Esq., H. Button, Esq. Treasurer J. II. Thornley. Bishop (Simpson made a short opening ad dress. He said the Convention had been called lor the purpose of extending the system ot Sun day Schools and Christian education. The ob ject and design ot Sunday Schools is, first, to pive tbem a clepr understanding of the Holy Scripturesj and secondly, tne early conversion ot the pupil? to God; and thirdly, their duty to themselves and the community at large. Sun day schools, be said, were supposed to be modern institutions; but Christ asked questions of the ministers of the law. The custom among the early fathers was to call their childrea together for instruction; but it is modem in its missionary operations, bringing the entire youth ot the country under a systematic train ing in the principles of religion. It is also a modern institution, in that it pecially beeks the early conversion ot chil dren, to save them from evil habits and early temptations. He said that the Methodists in their early history were censured for this idea or plan, but now it is adopted by all denomi nations. Secondly, it educates the youth to a common sympathy with humanity, and culti vates a large liberality for church interests througn its missionary and other collections. This education will prepare them to devise plans, and execute them with such efficiency as we now have but little conception of. The speaker then referred to the mode of teaching in Sunday Schools, and said that the system should be ol buch a character as to bring up the pupils so that they become teachers. The older scholars should graduate as teachers, as in Normal Schools, as an educated teacher is required and essential to give a proper under standing of the lessons taught. He said sing ing was a very pleasant exercise in the school, but it should not take the place of the cate chism and other religious instruction. The reverend gentleman then referred to the centenary collections no being made for the cause oi education, and said that during the session of the Illinois Conference $97,000 was raised at one meeting, $78,000 at Canton, Ohio, $18,000 at one meeting at Pittsburg, and $700,000 in New ork. He relerred to Mr. Vincent, the Assistant Secretary of the Methodist Sunday School Union, as being present ior the purpose of or ganizing Sunday Sctiooi Institutes lor teachers of Sunday Schools, and he believed that the organization of these infrtitutions would nive a great impetus to the cause of Sunday Schools. The Convention was iuvited to visit the Me thodist Episcopal Church Rooms, No. 1018 Arch fctreet. A resolution was adopted, recognizing all ministers as delegates to the Convention. The following eentlcmeu were appointed as a Committee on Fiuance: J. Dickenson, J. II. Thornley, R. J. Carson, G. W. Evans, J. Lin Uanwith, and J. Champion. The aiternoon session was devoted to explana tion and exercises connected witi the Teachers' lnslitute. The exercises were conducted by tteltev. J. H. Vincent, and the sinning was under the charge of Mr. Philip Phillips. The Institute was composed of about one hundred deleeatee, who had volunteered at the morning session to be present and participate in the ex ireises, all of which were intended to elevate the system of education in the Sunday Schools. Interesting Games. A criket matck was pla.ved near Havcrtord College, on Saturday last, between the first eleven Meriou Cricket Club and their frieuds, the first eleven Dorian Cricket Club of Uavevlord College, resulting, as the score will show, in a victory to the former. The match was very exciting, and was well con tested. It may be remembered that the Merion played its maiden match last spring with the Dorian Cricket Club, winning a victory: DORIAN, First Inline. PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, side of the waler. These gentlemen had come to take part in our centenary meeting andt present the objects of the centenary celcoration. In the old country, as Methodism had an earlier origin, the centenary had passed several years ago. But theso gentlemen come to greet us in the midst of our celebration in America. Some time since the churches in this country deter mined to raifc $100,000 to asist the brethren in Ireland. This was but a debt we owe to that country, for while the Church in Ireland is losing, we gain through her loss, In emiorration. The trials and tribulations of the ministry in Ireland were referred to by the speaker, but in spite of these they had determined to establish a college for the education ot their youth. They now bsk aid from us to enable them to aceom plish the worlt. Bishop Nimpson extended, in behalf ol Philadelphia Methodism, a hearty wel come to the lnh delegates. Dr. Scott, in reply, on behnlf of the delegation, said he was sent by his brethren in Ireland with a message of love and sympathy for the Metho dists in America in the great Centenary Cele bration. The speaker referred to the feeling in the Church in Ireland during the war in Ame rica, where the prayers followed the army of the North, and where no doubt was ever ex pressed in the ultimate victory of the right. The conflict over, the United States will start upon a new career ot glory. Her institutions were calculated to prosper the country. After sketching the transfer ot the Methodist Episcopal Church to this couutry, its rise, pro gress, and development into its nror-ent grand organization, he relcrred to the Church In Ire land. The Church there had many obstacles to contend with, not the least of which was the constant emigration to America. In nine years one-third of their people came to the United States. What could the Church do under these circumstances 1 The members nt home determined not to abandon the work, and God had directed them to this country. Already the people here are responding, and it could not be doubtful in re gard to the ultimate success of the ell'ort to secure the fund of $100,000 to endow a college for the education of the youth of Ireland.
