The Ruling Passion. The stand erected In tront of Independence U all for the Clymer Johnson party last evening, wai decorated on the sides with the Amencun flag, Union up. The flao on the front of the stand whs grouped up with the Union down, and so arranged tuat on ly seven full stars were observable on the Held. It iwas absolutely necessary to place this fluff Union do n in order to exhibit two stripes, one red, the other white, thus completing a picture of the rebel Mug. It this arrangement was not designed, the iHCt of the Union being down needs explanation. It was from this rostrum that Mr. Cl.vmer delivered an eddress lust even ing. As his party is now in the last throes of "galloping"' consumption, the Hug arrange went may be considered the "ruling passion Btrong in death." XiAUKCH. Democratic Mass-Mketing in FnoNt 01' lKLEI'EftPENCE HALL SPEECH OF IlElSTES Clyu-R. Several thousand persons assembled in front of Independence Hail last evening, lor the purpose Aof hearing an audress from the Hon. Heister Clymer, the Democratic candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania. The meeiiutr was organized by the appointment of a Presi dent and a number of Vice-Presidents. I lion. Anson V. Parsons addressed the meet ing. He stated that if the radicals carried out their ideas and wishes, before another year rolled aiound there would be war and blood shed in the streets of this peaceful cily and throughout the Uuited States. We want no more war. but peace according to the princi ples of the Constitution. The speaker con tinued until the arrival of Mr. Clymer, who, upon his introduction to the auoience, was greeted with long-continued applause. Mr. Clymer commenced by saying that the pi esent occasion was the first tune in his poli tical life that he had the pleasure of addiess ing bis lellow-citizens ottuis city. He did not come to discuss principles, but to assume certain principles as axioms, to answer ques tions, and to settle a matter personal to him self. The question which he came to answer was one that came borne to every Democratic heart. It was, "Watchman, what of the night?" He had been in most of the counties of the State, not excepting the Btamping-ground of Thandcus Stevens biuiself. At this stage of the proceedings the Young Men's Keystone Club arrived m front of the .stand, accompanied by a band. Their arrival put a temporary Hop to the speech. Mr. Clymer, continuinir, said that everywhere throughout the State he was met by such grand assemblages as greeted him in this city, in an swer to the question, "Watchman, what of the night?" he would say that the clouds and dark ness were disappeaiing, and on every hill-top and mountain the watch-tires of conservatism would be a victory to the Democratic party on Tuetday next as much as he believed there waa a Democratic party. The speaker remarked that he had intended rcDlvins to all the charges made against him. but on account of his being wearied from hi recent labois in the campaign throughout the State, he would refrain from so doing on the nresent occasioB. He closed bv urging the audience to stand by the Union and the Con stitution, and predicted, it tney wouia do so, a great victory lor tne Democratic party on rues dav next.
