THE DAILY 'EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 1866. CIT Y IIS TELLIGKNU K For Additional Local ltetnt tee F m -a ,J How A Ueoboian was Victimize'. Mr. Joseph 8hnw halln iroiu Stewart county, Georgia, and haa been making a tour throngh the Btates tor the benefit of hitf health. Think, ing that l'hllarlelphia would be a tlno place to while away a few days duniifr the session of the Convention, he ourae here and took rooms at a first-class hotel. A fine looking, well dressed, and (rood-mannered personage made the acquaintance ot Mr. Shaw, representing himself as a resident of Columbia, South Caro lina. He spoke of tho lots ol his sluves by the ltebcllion, the Urnble snllermps he and his Jriends had endured, and won tho confidence oi the. tyeorfrlan in an eilectiiul manner. Yesterday the twain took a promenade, when a clerKlj -looking man approached them and addressed th South Carolinian with. "Ah, pood morning; I have made out your account according to orders, and here it is;" presenting what was apparently a regularly-niade-otit bill. Tho South Carolinian took front hi pocket a check, and commenced expressing his renrets that it was very inconvenient to iro to bank. Turning to thu Georgian, he nked if he could accommodate him until ho could find it conve nient to reach the barns. Mr. Shaw drew fortli $JOO In bunk bills, which the South Carolintnn took and handed to the clerk, eivinsr Mr. Shaw In lieu thereof a check. The clerk expressed his profound thanks, and, bidding the gentlemen pood mornlnor. took hla departure. Mr. Shuw and his friend continued their pro menade a short rtif?aiice,wln-n the Utter ssiid he would step into a store lust lor a moment. lie did so, and Mr. blmw waited a considerable time, then entered the srore, but no one -could tell what had become of Hi.- Honth Carolinian. I?eing directed to the detective otlice.he reached there in a high ct'ite 01 excitement, to be told that his check was worth le-s, and that he was the victim o a confidence man. f to left a ties crintinn of tho shamer. hut that will nrnhrtlilv avail little, as a pile of S'Kin in trreenbacks is a snllicient stake to warrant his taking himself oil' to a more geinul clime. Liairr-FiNGRRED G en thy. Three men, who gave the nume of Thomas Cunningham, John Johnson, and William Myers, were heard on a charee of beincr pro! ess io rial thieves. Officer Smith testified that he and Mr. Tagtrart arrested the defendants on Girard avenue; they hatl been on one o( the cars, and got oil', and their movements were considered suspicious. Alderman What do you know of the men? Witness I've seen the little man (Johnson) with prolessional thieves. Don't know much about him. Oilicer Tasecrt testifled to the rest; did not know the men as prolet-'ionals. Cunningham and Myers were held in SlOOl) bail each for their future aood behavior, and John son was committed lor ninety days as a profes sional thieh Willthm VandebiU was broucht up by Officer Taeeart. Solomon Iteis testified that he rode on one ot the Eighth street cars o Girard avenue, and w hen he was about to get off at the avenue de fendant piessed up against him, and another man did the same. As soon as he got oil' the cars he discovered that his pocket-book had been stolen. Delendant and another got off the rar and attempted to escape; one of them was successful. Vandebilt was held in $1500 bail to answer at the present term of the Court. Johnson and cltmkr Meetiso at National Guards' Hall. A larye meeting was held last evening at the National Guards' Hall. There was a tine band in attendance. The nrst speaker was General Heath, of Nebraska. He congratulated the audience on the interest manl iest ed by our city lor the cause ot the Union, and relened to the grand Convention in eulo gistic terms. He mentioned that Andrew John son was striving to uohold the Constitution, and deprecated the action ot Congress in not allow in the Southern members of Congress to be admitted. He said the South had submitted in . good laith to their defeat, and alter referring to the negro question, concl uded by proenost icat.ing another war unless the amalgamation of a black and while Government was done away with. Governor Parsons, of Alabama, was tho nxt speaker. He commenced by uiludiuc to the fact that it was six years since he hud addressed an audience in this city. He accused England of havine made a cat's paw ot the fcouth, and said he hcocd the cruel record ot the pa.-t had been buiied. He congratulated this city for having nllowed the neaceiul assemblage of the Union Convention, and concluded by hopiner that its labors for the better cernenta'uou of the States would be lasting. Other addresses were made, and the Convention adjoi.nied at a late hour. An Old Offekdkr. John Filly was brought up by Defective Henderson, who testi tied that ho had arrestee bun on a bench war rant from tbe Court. Found hira on Girard axenne, but not, in a crowd. Chiel Franklin said that Filly was wanted on two or three charges, on which there are bills of indictment. This deiendanc was bound over several months ago on the charge ot being concerned in robbing the clock store ot Mr. amitb, South Second street, in company with a man named Howard. He was bound over at the Central Station, re leased on prolessional bail, and subsequently arrested on the charge of assaulting with a billy a railroad conductor on one of the cars, who had interlered to prevent his picking a pocket. That charce was also heard at the Central Sta tion a couple of months niro. Filly was soon released on bail, and has been a fugitive from justice since. His boldness in returning to the city with several serious charges hanging over kiiii. would seem to indicate that he aid not fear to encounter the man Mho had become security in several thousand dollars for his appearance at Ccurt. The bench warrant on which he was arrested waa given to OlUcer Henderson by Ch.ef Franklin. Convention ok Soldikrs and Sailors. The injured man was immediately placed upon a stretcher and con veyed to the Pennsylvania Hospital, wbisre his wound was properlv dressed. The dot tor in attendance was unable to state whether his skull wbh fractured, as his condition would not admit of a thorotich examination at that time. Three other pontes, f aid to have been in com pany with Smiih, were taken into custody, and were locked up to await a hearing. Another Homicide. Last night, about quarter rat eleven o'clock, a man mined Francis JicClpary was shot in the head while standing at Nineteenth and Cnllowhill streets. It appears that there wn a disturbance at the time between the Good-Will IIo?e and Spring Garden Engine Company, and that during the allair the shot wa fired bv some unknown per son. The wounded man was taken to the Pennsylvania Hospital, where an examination of his injuries was made, and it was found that, his skull had been ltacturt J by the entry of the bail. His case is considered boneless. In Bad Company. Detective Brown brought up a prisoner, whom he arrested on one of the Mrard avenue cars m a pickpocket. De lendant gave the rime ot Charles Watkins. The detectives were asked if they knew him as a pro le.itdonnl. All answered negatively but Officer Henderson, who said that he knew him by the name of Sweeney. The oilicer then testitied" that lie hud seen Sweeney with professional thieves, but did not know anything of him personally. Sweeney was committed under the ninety-day law.
