I. .n.nt.nn vhu uc biuteieeu ijihu wiiu hut utiirr, ut 11 leaves the bead entirely tree, and is the most natural position attainable. A gojd swimmer ever tires at this, and wbile it is a most grace ful stroke, it is better pertbrmed, us a rule, thau all tbe other stiokes put together, as it is the rs acquired by tbe aspirant. Hide swimming, as tis name indicates, is a style ol swimming on tbe side; keeping a por tion of the head immered and striking out one arm whilei the other is describing a half circle. It is cii( iial lor work against tide, but is princi pally used to Kain speed. It is employed, almost without exception, by competitors 111 the racs at tbe Lambeth liutns. Any old swimmers who fall acios these pages may recollect a youth who was matched to sim jjpcKwith, the then champion, about nine ears aeo; and if they do, they will tecull with nicaure the easy dexterity and grace wlik'li turn youth possessed, and which enabled him to attain ,ieea which was most extraordinary, eons dering h's olim tigure and his years. It was gravely asserteJ to me by a pro:csioual the other day, that the side etioke was introduced bv George l'ewtres-i. . avtiunncr of twenty years back. Of course, this is too evidently iit'aiird to require refutation, but 11 it were needed, a curious liule old swim ming hand-book in my possession, two centuries old, would show the fallacy, as it describes, "How to Swim, neither on the Buck nor on the Belly," and the directions following clearly point to the system now so much ractised, which is doubtless as old as Adam. The overhand stroke consists of the ordinary tide strobe, but with one arm performing a circle, one bait in the water and one in the air; the hands being kept in a cup-like form, lor it may be the ordinary breast stroke, but with the arms thrust forth alternately and brought rapidly back through the water. Tbe la.t b ethoa ensures the mot speed, as there is a much quicker movement of the arms, but the first is the most poouiar and most practised, as it is by tar the easiest of acquirement. The overhand stroke is the most exhausting, and ...... . . .. ,j . . . .. . 1. . : . always involves a great expenditure 01 sirengm; it is only used where rapidity is needed lor a short distance, as, for Instance, at the end of a swimming race, or, it may be, to reacu a snaking person. There is, however, a swimmer, well- known at the .Lambeth Baths, who can swim . five hundred yards in an almost incredibly short space ot time; but we are informed he throws a hammer continually in his trade, and that is just the kind of practiee needed for his stroke. There arc a sood many hybrid styles which I lave not spice to discuss here, but the three above mentioned are at tbe root of them all; there remains but one great division, and that I shall but touch briefly, and that is, swimming on the back. Han, whether in the water or out, is at a disadvantage whon "on his back;" and hewill not resoit to locomotion in .that position unless it ba to go quite gently us a rest. In tno sea this style ot swimming is very plea' Bant. Indeed, I have experienced few things pleasanter than to le almost motionless, floating on the blue waters of the Mediterranean, and to be fitted gently up and down by the ploasant waves ot that tldeless sea. London Society, A Coy's first Impressions of Europe. Cork, Ireland, July 6. Dear H.; Did you ever hear of Puddle from Cork? Well, 1 am at Cork, and so is Paddie. He and I enjoy our eelvef. greatly. Like th3 children and the bears, it is as much for bim to see me as it is tor me to Bee bim. But Ireland is a lunny place. It is inhabited principally by beggars. We are continually besieged by these. One specimen followed us for two miles this ! afternoon tor a ha'penny, which we did not have. Even body knows that I am a Yankee at first ', Bight. Two newsboys came up to mo this morn- i ins, as I was taking a walk, and accobted me: "Place, sir, will you give me acintP They were very much delighted when they received it, and went off shouting that they had 'a cint." Not long since, an elderly rmchelor, who has the reputation of being very miserly, was applied to lor a subscription towards some charitable object; and tor reasons best known to himself gave a point-blank refusal to the application, when by be preatly ottemlod tne parties who, in their rather liberal estimate of his generosity, had considered him gcod at least for 'a couple of guineas. The affair got talked about, and came to the eais ol a party ot trolicaome youths, full of mischief, who determined to pay the old gentleman out for his feltishness; and their moihis operandi was to favor bim with a visit trom his Hatauic Maiestv. A bold spirit was lound willing to represent that well-known character, and at a late hour one night last week the dangerous pike was carried out. Th" pro kmporedevil was well smeared with phosphorus, and carried with one hand a canister of burning sulphur, to give him the orthodox brimstone odor. In the'otlier he bore a buck's foot, well charged with electricity, the said loot belne attached to a non-conducting handle, to prevent the ebcapo of the elertrlc fluid. By some means this juvenile representa tive of "Auld llornie" managed to gain an entiance to the old gentleman's Bleeping apart ment, and In the "very witching hour of night, when churchyards yawn, and hell itself breathes forth contagion to the world,1' made his ap pearance at tbe bedside ot his victim. Sud denly awakened, the poor man rubbed his eyes, stared, rubbed hh eyes again, and doubtless began to leel uncommonly uncomfortable. In a sepul chral voire his visitor requested him to Bhake bauds. He tremblingly obeyed, and received such a terrible shock Irom the electrified buck's tool, that, coupled with the hoof-like character ol the foot i self, left him very Utile doubt thit tin Lord ol Hades t ad coma to balance up account-1. Paralyzed tor a few moments, be Boon broke into a piteous whine for mercy. The Iiiiihs oi tbe buruing sulphur, and the fitful phosphorescent flushes ot light 011 "Cloorie's" luce, were evidently too mucn for him; and his whine soon broke into a yell of terror. "Come with me," said the guest. "Oh no, lo not yet," answered the hot. "'What mercy can yon expect, when you give nothing to the poor?'' asked the devil. "Oh, spare mo, and I'll give all I've got," answered the bedevilled. "Will you subscribe to the fund?'' quiried Mr. Me- IihiBtopheles. "Anything you like," replied Mr. Jives. And so the 'arce went on, until at length tl.o pandenioniaeiil gentleman gained his point, and quitted tbe bedroom with a hand seme donation in his batanic pocket, leaving the old gentleman in a cold perspiration, Irom which, we should imagine, lie lias hardly recovered.
