CITY INTELLIGENCE. For A&lUional Local Items see ITiirl Faje., PoLiCKMBiroif thic Rampage A. Lively 8chn in tub Fifth Ward r&o role ot a police man Id a city tue size ot Plnlilelphia lb bf do means an cany one. In keeplnpr a strict overaiirht upon the multitudinous intere1s committed to his rare, he will now and then make a mistake. These mistakes arc usually of a ridiculous character, but they frequently assume: a serious aspect. A surplus ol official zeat is almost invariably at the bottom ol the allair. Last evening an incident occurred in the nciRhborhojd of Fifth and Pino streets which is iiecfeely in point. A gentleman residing in that locality bad the bad taste to imbibe an ex cefsivo quautliy of spirituous concoctions. About Pluht o'clock he reached his house, being at the time in a verv hilanou condition, it is sale to say that he coulu not distinguish lils elbow from the end or a pump handle. Toere lore it was not to be supposed taat he should remember his vows at the hymeneal altar, "to love, cheiiHh, and protect" the companion ol his Joys and sorrows. Failirg to remember this, he proceeded to mp Ureal tuat long Buttering creature. Bv-and- he aroused the neighborhood by his opera tions. A gentleman iivine opposite, who re spected the f anciity of the Suobath, and hid, moreover, treasurer) nn in Mj mnm. o in tho "Hermon on the Mount," wnich declares that "iJlet-scd are the pfacemakers." made his way into tho house and endeavored to ?eparate the contending parties. U is success was not flattering untd the arrival of the police, when tho pugnacious Benedick was hniiliy dragged away I mm his prostrate spouse. 'ibis was all well enough, but lust here the affair took a new turn. One ot the officers be longed to that class who someiimes permit their zeal to lead thorn into a mistake. He took it upon bimsolt to castiaatc the man who had mo shamefully beaten Ins wile. He ptrucc the pri soner in the luce with his list. He forgot that there was a court 01 Justice to authorize and localize punishments lor such misdemeanors as assaulting and battering one's wile. The gentleman who had first interfered in behalf ol the lLjured woman thought proper to remonstrate with the officer, reminding him that bis prisoner was druuk, even to insensibility, uhe officer thereupon ordered this lover of lav and order to betaken iuto custody. It was done; two other officers who were present seized him by the arms, holding both ol them tiehtly; they started ibrtbwith tor the station, bearing their prisoner along without nis hat. Anottoer gentleman, residiner near, who was present, remonstrated aeamst tbis proceedins, and becged the officer at least to allow his friend to pick up bis hat. The result ot this appeal will probably cause him to glance askew when ever he encounters a blue coat in tho future; for he too was taken into custody, aud the whole party wile beater, unotlend-.ng citizen, and Uiend were unceremoniously marched oil" to the (Station House. The esse was then fully explained to the Lieu tenant, who took a sober view ot the matter, and ordered the two last to be discharged at once. The officers who made tne unwarrantable arrests likewise made ample apoloey. declaring their great sorrow lor what they bad thought lessly done. The eentleman who had abiidtd his wife was also di-charaed, as the latter re membered her vow "to love, honor, and obey,"' and reiusod to put in any complaint against him. It is very evident that the intentions of the parties who interieied in this case were on the side of law and order, and that tbey were not guilty ot a breach ot either. For this reason the conduct of the police is open to severe con demnation. They thould carefully avoid tho effects of excessive zeal, as the maxim of the law regards the escape 01 a dozen guilty men as preferable to the punishment ot one who is innocent. Akotheb Pbizk-Fight. About 7 P. M. yesterday evening, word was brought to the sixteenth District Station House in West Philadelphia that a prize-fight was in progress on the Alnishoue wharf. Servant Phy aud a squad ot men were immediately sent out to the scene of operations. Wben they got in sight of tie crowd the ruffians took to their boats and made good their cscap?, all except one boat containing a man aud a boy, which was seized and captured just as it was pushing off from the whart, not, however, betore Officer Kelly had discharge ' a couple of shots lrom his re volver at the -tan, and stuuned him by hitting him with a it k. They were both com mitted to await a fa. 'ter heaiing. The two combatant;. ' un Coye and Michael Johnson, 6tnpped and .ommenced operations last evening somewhere about 6 o'clock, or it may be about GJ. There were present in the crowd some two or three hundred spectators, and the wharves on the other side of the river were black with the lookers-on from the citv. Both of the prize-fighters were young men, not over twenty-two or twenty-tLree years ot age. When the police disturbed them they had fought some eitfbtv rounds in the spac- of one hour and a half, when they first pitched the ring, to ensure safety to themselves ihey placed men armed with pistols at the iront and rear of a house on the wharf, to prevent the tenant from getting up and giving lniormation while . the ilgnt was going on. The two brutes fought very carefully and gingerly, and although such a great number of rouuds were fought, during such a long time, too, neither of them were much injured. It is highly probable that the two priucipals will up and at it again, seeing they were interrupted so inopportunely last evening. It a shame that our city should be disgraced by these beastly exhibitions. This is the second prize-tight that has occurred within the limits of this city within a week. Had il not been for the very clever dodge of taking to the river in boats, the police would have captured the prin cipal part of them. The 14tii op August Cowvkxtion.
