Tke gni ewerpitakea match for $3000, mile feeati, three In Ove, under saddle, between Dex ter, Central Butler, and Toronto Otiief, came ef jeetcrday afternoon, at the Fashion Course, Long Island. The attendance was quite large sad orderly; the track in tine condition lor last tune, and the roods approaching the eenrse were tree from dual, owina; to the rain and wind storm the day previous. For a Jong time past tbta match has created much late ral and speculation in the society known as turf ite, at well aa reaching the business portions of the city, and even a inr as beiuf? the topic of aoT-reation In the parlors ot some ol our wealthiest citizens. The past week, on any favorable occasion, pool-filing bad prevailed to a heavv extent. All along, Dexter was held the favorite at two to one amnHt the other two, votwiibsianotng Butler bad dinn the mile in the aame riv in 2'21, and was reported to be in flue settle at the present time. Not so much was known of Toronto Chief, although he was made the seconl lavorito, trom the iact of his having trotted half a mile in l'OSJ. The race was tot what misht be termed a looely contested one, Dexter having it his own way; St, however, gave general satisfaction, and very one went, away highly pleased at having seen the mile trotted in 2 19. which would afford something to talk over at future meetings, if Boib:ng el-e. JfurU heat. Pools sold on the track on an average Dex $200 "'ironto Chief, $75; Butler, $50. ' r...er rider of Dexter (Mur pb ) bcintr tnoii t on Toronto Cnic', doLiUtless lad the etlect of ur'nglnu the Chief into mora favorable notice. W. Dobell, the rider of Dexter, was well known to all as a most naithed lockey, but it was thought by many tbat he did noi know the deposition ol Dexter as ell as Murphy did beiore th horse lelt the stnbles of Uiram Woodruir. Butler was nbly ridden by J. L. Uoll, who won the rol. The Cbioi was outside, and Dexter ia the centre. At the second time ot soring, they got the word "go." Toronto Chief took up the lead, Butler next, and Dexter bebiud, acting stranzelv at rst ; reaching the turnincr.the Chief wa leading Built r a lull length. Dex'er male a break, and was lelt at leant ten lengths behind. II -, however, soon settled down, and spread out In fine style, shortening the gap at I he quarter-pile to foul lengths. The Chief was leading Butler two lengths behind the leader; this, of course, It It Dexter six lengths behind the leader time, 36 seconds. A most splendid race was shown along the back-stretch, and the interest in Dextrr, as he gradually clotedup the gao, was most intense. Arriving ut the half mile, the positions weie the Chief one length ahead of Butler, who was leading Dexter only half a length time, 1124. Coming dowo the far stretch, lroru the half nvle to thethiee-q lartera, Dex'er had pushed his white face to the front; then, at the turn into the homc-stretcb, tney were all together. Butler made a good brash up the norue-st retch to keep side by side with. Dexter; the latter, however, was too swift tor him, and carried Butler into a break just before reaching the judges' stand. Dexter won the heat by two lengths; the second place was given to Toronto Chiel. Tim, 224$. . Second Heat. Any odds on Dexter. Pools old: Dexter, $210: Toronto Chief, $10; Butler, $30. Again, at the second attempt, thev were sot oft on very even terms. At trie turn Dexter was lead in if the Cbicf oue letietu, who was one length ahead ot Butler. These positions were unchanged to the quarar, only that Butler was three lengths iu the rear ot ' Dexter, who was leading the Chi?f a lenath. Time, 354 seconds. No material change tO"k plucc down the back Btrclch; ut the hall, Dexter was two lengths in front of Toronto Chief, Butler oue leauth behind, in 110. Then each ol the horses were let out freely, Dexter widening the gap, with Butler making cl tse tracks alter the Chief. Kaon dorse showed a tremendous bnrstof speed, as the time will show lor itself. At the throe qunrietB Dexter was leading Butler four length, the latter having changed places with the Gnief. Dexter had full swine up the home-stretch, and landed home in gallant form, rive lengths ahead ot Butler, (he Chief being four lengths behind Butler; time z19, wh eh, hen announced, called 1 rth a simultaneous burst of aoplause. This is the be-t time ever made in a match race, bing a trifle less than Dexter's own lastest time 2'18 l-5th asroinst time, last year. The iainres sion prevailed that had Dexter been cro wded he cou.d have made the heat in one or two seconds less time. Tnird Ileal. No bettiner. Just after getting the word, the Chiet and Dutler both broke badlv, allowing Dexter a lead of cleht lengths. The Cb:cf was ft adied riist and took s?cond posi tion, with Butler close handy. When nearing the quarter pole, Dexter, who was goin? at a Hying gait, suddenly broke (running past that distance in ihiny-iour seconds). In the mean time the Ciiief had come close up to him and Butler slightly ia the rar. Dexter was got down atler losing considerably in distauce, but boioie gei'ing thoroughly steadied he a "jam broke; Butler took up the lead. At the half the Chiet had deprived Butler of the lead, being lour lengths in the advance in 111, while Butler was five lengths ahead of Dexter. The very idea of Dexter winning this heat was looked upon aa absurd. He, however, came down the far-stretch with wonderful rapidity, and at tbe three-quarters was only a length behind the Chiet, having pusscd ButW. To ronto Chief broke soon afieA passing inio the home-etreteh, and Dexter to a commanding lead, and won tue beat seven? (lengths ahead of Butler, who was leading the Chief a single lenirth. Time 2 22. If ttie time had been taken from the spot where Dexter squared himself lor the laet third of a mile, the figures would doubt less appear almost f abulous. This was a glorious termination to tbe day's sport, and will loug be remembered by thoe who were fortunate enough to witness such a performance. A spontaneous burnt ol cheers resounded throughout the en closure when Dexter was declared the winner. SUMMARY. TRorrrao. Fashion Cource, L. I.
