THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. rHILADELPEI A, MONDAY, JULY 16, 18CG. OITif INTELLIGENCE for AMitivnal City Intelligence tee AtfiVi J age. A Bold Attempt at Swindlivo Ttik Boors Hohokbn Bani. Before Recorder Eneu, en Baturdav, a man named Lewis Lcaman had a hearing, charged with attempting to defraud the firm ot Hagan, Boyd A Co., tobacco dealers. It appears that the accused called at the store, savinf? that ha wished to purchase some tobacco. He was taken In charge by one of the salesmen, who sold the prisoner of bill of cigars and tobacco amounting to two thousand dollars. Leamau oil'ered In payment for the goods a certiticate of deposit on the North River Bank of Hobokrn, N. J. He was informed by the Hrra that they could not accept the certificate until they had ascertained whether it was all right. Learaan remarked that he was perfectly satisfied, and lelt, sajing be would return in an hour or so. During his absence, one of the firm, while looking over a New York paper, rend an account of an alleged swindling concern called the "North River Bank, of Uoboken, N. J.." giving full par ticulars as to the character of said institution, their mode of doing business, etc. The crtlfirate was examined, and found to be upon the Identical bank. Lcaman soon alter came in ; he was sharply questioned; he said that the certificate was (riven him by a party in New York. He then produced an order from the Individual autuori.insr hiui to make purchases and use the certificate in payment. The expla nation being unsatisfactory, no was taken into custody bv Detective Officer Samuel Henderson, and was held iu $2000 bail by the Recorder lor a tnrther hearing on Thursday next. The followiue are the particulars in reference to the discovery of the swindle in New York, and the arrest of the oflicers of the bogus Bank: On Thursday eveniue, Officer Robinson, of the Broadway squad, arrested two men named Samuel Jackson and O. W. Chadwiek, on the complaint of Mr. (Jeoree W. Hoier, ol No. 274 Third avenue, who charced them with swindling. The prisoners were locked up tor the night at police headquarters, and were on Saturday arraigned beiore Justice Dodge, at the Jeflerson Market Police Court. From the ctatenient of the complainant and others, it would appear that for some months a sjftem of swindling bad been practised by the prisoners upon a gigantic scale uniler the name of banking. Within the time mentioned various pel sons have been in the hubitot entering stores and brokers' olllces, and either purchasing quantities ot goods or else borrowing money, tendering iu return checks on what purported to be an institution called the North River Bank, located at Uoboken, New Jersey. Should the person to whom the check was tendered hesitate about taking it, he would be re Jerred to the banking houe of O. W. Ctiat wick A Co., No. 64 Wall street. Should a mes senger be sent there he would be assured that the institution, although a new concern, was considered perfectly reliable and sound, and, of couri-e, with feuch an indorsement, the check would be taken. ChadwicK's readiness to in dorse the concern may be accounted for from the lact that he is alleged to have been the President of it. In a short time, however, strnnee rumors began to be circulated. It was stated that the checks so freely circulated were not cashed when presented at the bank in Uoboken; that the bank, in fact, only consisted of a small oflice in Hoboken, presided over by a young man who, when invited to cash the checks uttered by the employers, invariably responded that he had no money, and knew nolhing about the matter. btrange as it may appear that such a mode of doing business could be allowed to exist for any length of time, it is stated that more than f :W0,000 have been realized by the principals in this swindle. At length their career has been brought to a close, at least for the ore sent, in the following manner: On the 28th of June, Jackson, one of the prisoners, called uron u. w. noier, the complainant above mentioned, and asked him to cash a check lor $32-65 on the above bank, alleging that as it was dated July 7, he could not get it cashed before thut date. Alter some hesitation, and after rcpated assurances from Jackson that it was perfectly good and would be caohed at maturity, he took the check and gave Jackson the amount asked lor. He called upon Chadft ick. and was assured bv him that the check was all rirht, and would be paid on pre sentation at the bank in Uoboken. On the 7th instant Mr. Holer called at the office wherein the "bank" is located, in Hobo ken. and was there assured bv the young man in charge that he had no money, and could pay no checks. Satisfied that he had been swindled. Mr. Hoier caued the arrest of the accused, as already mentioned above. Fkeaks or the Lightning.
