THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPII. PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, JULY 10, 186G. OITIr INTELLIGENCE For Additional f ity Intelligence tee Jit(!i Pace. General Sherman in Philadelphia. Idalor-General William T. Sherman reached tbie city ycBtcrdny, and put up at the Conti nental Hotel. In the atternoun, in company with Major-Genera! Meade at.d Mayor McMl cbael, he visited tbe Iron-clads atLtasuo Island, and, alter an inspection of them, returned to tbe city by water, and was landed at (he south p4er ot the Navy Yaid. A corauanv of marines was drawn up in line to lalute the distinguinhed visitor, and uliey were received by the chief officer in command at the yard, amid the roar of cannon on ten receiving ship Prinneton. Neither Gencial hlerman nor General Meado had anything aoout them to denote their rank, both being plainly aulrcd in citizen's drets. They returned to the hotel at an early hour. In the evening the General was entertained at the Union League bouee, and at 11 o'clock be was complimented wiih a serenade. A crowd, lully the whole exteut ot Broad street, was as sembled to receive the General. In repouse to the calls General .Sherman made his appearance on the balcony, and alter the cheering subsided Mayor McMicbacl introduced him to the people. The cheering was continued lor some time after the General commenced his remark, and his introductory senteuces wcr not beard by the reporter, lie was understood to say that he would not detain thcin long, on account of the ruin which was then lulling, lie then continued as follows: "I recrret that I am eompelled.tojraake a hasty visit to jour city. 1 huve long desired to come to Thiladelpbia to spend some days, but have been unable to find the time. Our country w a larec one, and I cannot remain long in one spot It' 1 wlfh to see much ol it. I am going to the Rocky Mountains, and I must not make more than a hnsty visit until a more fitting opportunity occurs. In the meantime, I tbank vou lor coming here to-night. I would much rather you would nee me in the day, and see me at your pleasure, instead of standing, as you do to-night, in the rain. But as you have called upon me, I have come forward, more ut ot respect to you than for any pleasure I lcel in detaining you. I know periectly well that the State of Pennsylvania, and the city of Philadelphia, have in a thousand -ways, not only to battle, but in caring tor ttie soldiers' families, and also in giving a hearty welcome to the soldiers upon their return, done their lull share in restoring and making more perlect that Union formed in 1776. We must battle lor the Union; we must do it if it's to ee done. 1 do not understand how it is to be done, but it becomes part ol our faith to accomplish It as sure as we accomplished tbe end or the war. That is the duty of my life, and it shall be to the end ot my hie to make the Union one and entire. I know it will be done as sure as you are aniembled here to-night. Which of you lour years ago would have said that you would have been here to-nieht in peace and quiet, and with ail the business of the country coing on ? None of you would have dared to assort it. No mau could foresee how it was to bo done, but every man knew that it would be done, and that we would fight until it was done. All the other results will follow just as certain. "Gentlemen, I.lhank you for your kindness in coming to-night, lor I feel it was indeed a kind ness to come in this rain-storm, and 1 regret that I cannot meet you where we could get a little more closely together and be more fr.endly. I hopo this will satisfy vou, lor I intend to give you entire satisfaction. Good night." The General then retired. In response to the calls of the crowd, General Meade came forward and excused blmselt for not making a speech. The people were then admitted to the reading-room of the League House, where General Sherman received them, and gave to ail a hearty shake ot the hand. Guardians of tiik Pooe.
