Ttife DAILY EVENING TBLEChtAi WEDNESDAY, JUNE : 8 COMHVUlCAtlOK. T1IE CITY FASrOR CASE. MONDAT NlOHT, JunO 15. Editor of the Evening Telegraph Sir: Ther ppert In jour paper of h'fl ltraoon w nnlcaiKn purporting to hare been written by irilllam McElwee,Ctty Pastor, which not only ktlsreprewnte me, but has the demerit of im porting the motives of those who prosecuted klm for an alletced embezzlement. If there was any one to blame in the matter it was himself. I publkbed the appeal which he forwarded to the I'rest office. It was especially lor Mrs. II. DowHI. Ia response to that appeal, he ackno w ledjred that he had received, especially lor her, $ HI fiO, and a package of tea and coffee. I took It for pranted he told the truth, lie paid tirst S10. then 20. mrtkinsr S30. Two or three weeks alter this Mrs. II. Dowell tailed npon him tor more money. He replied "he bad no more tor hr; she oiieht to oe satis fied." A month alter he had receive the money be rail thlrtj dollars more, maktnK sixty dollars. Ikis payment was made because ot the interven tion of' Mr. Charles Pcrke. a hard-work inst, industrious mechanic oi Philadelphia, whose character, in my cttlmatloit, is excellent. The twenty-one dollars and Ally cents, the balance f the amount, was paid in the Court, alter a partial hearing of the case. lit re the wbole matter should have remained. Id his communication the City Pastor asserts the lollowtiifr: "how exactly this letter correspond Inltsstato Bieuts, to my oa explaua.ory letter to the Pre, which air. rVilaou bad m liis humis twoutv-lour hour at least beiore ho had tlio warrant isued lor my arrest, wi I be seen b comparD tliom. "Hoc in the letter in lu I. It was published bv Mr W II on, though entiroiv private, in toe Ve.v ot haturday, Mar V&, as testimony tor the prosecu tion." This contains two falsehoods. First. I did not have the letter in my possess. on at least twenty Jour hours belore the iirrest. Secondly. I published the letter in the report f the pi'oceedintrs be love Recorder Kneu, not as testimony for tne prosecution, but simply as the delenxe of the defendant. 1 knew the hear ing was ex parte, and therefore was very par ticular in this esse, and publicly produced it, as a matter ot just ce to the City I'a-tor. lie denies in his communication that be did not charge lor carriage hire. Of course he did not charge; he attempted to do so, however. This was sorn to by Mrs. Dowell before the Re corder, and the City Pastor himself, in the pre sence ol a crowded audience, absolutely acknow ledged the truth of the witness. lie admitted that all the evidence elicited on that occasion Was true. lie further says that he exhibited letters to Mrs. H. Dowell, giving bim di cretionary power to disburse the m ney. Belore the Recorder he absolutely said he had no Utters; ho had thrown them into the waste-paper bnsr, and they were gone. Tl is was within about twenty-four hours after he pvid the last instalment of thirty dol lars. There are (several other misstatements in his communication, but I have not the time nor the patipnee to cull them out. I have given enough to exhibit the general character of his publication. The public should remember that the District Attorney abandoned the case, aul therefore, Judge P.erce, who was on the bench, had no opportunity to decide upon the merits ot the question. Had the City Pastor received a written state ment from me, In reference to the $2150, he "would have had no further trouble. But he re jected it. Hence the appeal to the law. As the reverend gentleman insists on appearing in pub lic print, he nia.v, if ho chooses, answer this question. It the $2160 did not belong to Mrs. II. Dowell, why did you, Mr. City Paslor, con sent to pay it, previous to the final disposal of the case? Upon my word, Mr. Editor, I really think the City Pastor had better attend to his legitimate business of preaching the Gospel. 1 have no disposition, especially during the "heated term, ' to enter Into a newspaper dis cussion with him. I thotild not have written this much had he told the truth in reference to mjEf-lI. Bo tar as the attacks upon the charac ter ol Mr. Perkes is coucerucrt, I hve nothing to say. My religion teaches me to pay regard to n en's moral character, and to assail no man, but to speak ol bim a I tJnd him. Respectfully, Charles C. Wilson. A Loyal Printing Office Mobbed by Copperheads.
