Wilmer. forn.etlv Rertor 01 Si. Mark's Eri( opal Church, of Philadelphia, has been chosen as the new Episcopal Bishop ot Louisiana. He Is a native-of AW-iandrin, Vh., and for the last year or bo has resided ai Klkridire, Md., where he had chnnre ot a church. He leit St. Mark's Church and returned South, and wns subsequently sent to Europe to purchase Iiibles and Testaments lor the Confederate army. It was on tain return from England that ho' whs captured on the Ixmcr Che;-ap"ake by a Federal cruder, and rent to the Old Capitol Pii"on, from which he was soon released. This statement, published in a Southern paper, i not altogether correct. The revf rend gentleman as detained at For tress Monroe. He had with Dim a largo number of chests, filled with printed works and material of every description, some ot which were ex actly the reverse of Bibles and Testaments, and made tor base pnrjoaes. Npeclmensof the same were brouiil.t to Philadelphia and exhibited in the Detectives' office. lit was permitted to sro South, but was finally arrested as ft spy, and locked ud in the Old Capitol Prison, fr.mi which he was releused by tht clemency of Presideut Lincoln. TnK IlORTiCCLTUKAL fcOCIETT. A monthly meeting of the Horticultural Society was held at their hull, corner Hroad and Walnut (trcels, last evening D. ltodncy King, Presi den1, in the chair. Tne purpose of the meeting was to liuten to an cs-tay ou tiie "Philosophy of Pruninc," by Dr. John A. Warder, of Cincin nati, president of the Ohio Pomological Society. His remarks were somewhat elabo rated. There were two obiecrs, he said, in prunine, one which is to produce wood frrowtn, and ihc other to produce fruit iulnes. Whatever tends to check the growth ol the wood Induces tl.e formation of fruit spurs, and throws the tree into u bearing condition. The various methods of producing the two results alluded to were lully ami ably set lonh. A discussion amone the members of the Society on the same subject then ensued, in which the value ot seeding orchards down to crass lor the purpose of inducing a fruit-bear-uig condition of the tree, and at the same time inducing healthiness and longevity, was set torth. Cherries were particularly spoken of as much more 8iib)ect to disease in ploughed ground than in a grass sod. It was stated that one of this most successtul cultivators of cherries in the country, who resides near Pittsburg, adopts the method of keeping h's trees in grass sod, cutting the grass annually, and top-dressing the same in order to restore the waste caused by the abstraction ot the grass. The Society then adjourned till Tuesday evening next, at which time a special rose and strawberry exhibition will take place. The competition on this occa sion will be open to all. . Tolice Intkli.igence. At the Central Station yesterday, Joseph Thomas had a final hearing ou the charge of committing several boarding-bouse robberies. Mrs. Frances E. His request was complied with, and thut was the last Mrs. Seal saw ol him until she met him at the May jr's office. At sup per time a servant went up to his room to cull him down, and the room was found empty. A suit of clothes had disappeared with him.
