How many persons are employed at the dilleretit stati'mis! A. From mil) to 1000, I thiiik: but I will give the list at the next meot inu; the prlneipul ollicer ure elected by the Trustees; tne laborers are appointed by the Engineer, on the recom riicnd.it ion of TrtwtcvB, or a member of Council-); tue Euv;ineer is re-q-tired to report at every meeting ot the Board tii" number of nicu employe. I, the number dig cliarucd, and the cau.-e tor ihe diichurtre; the Knpineer has no unlliontv to employ without a rtioniiiieiKlatioii ol the Trustees, except to till a vacancy in caw of cineipeticy. If the Chair man on Works should dir-'ct him to employ extra men to unload ciuh, the Trust would function it. If the Chief Kuiruieer says it Is requisite to have men, thev are obtained, and he only report to the Hoard; he is responsible for the number employed. Q. Cun you tell the amount of coal furnished the works since jon have been President' A. 1 will make tho tt.itement at the next meet ins. The Engineer has generally sent to the didercut parties furnishiiifr coal, requesting bids, when coal was needed. He has been directed to go to parties when no bids were sent in. He, the wit ness, could not say whether any competition was as-ktd tor by advertisement. He thought an ad vertisement was inserted in the papers in Pitts burg. The Westmoreland and Pennsylvania Cual Company had a contract for three years, and they were lilhnir it when he (air. Jones) became a member ol the Hoard, two years aeo. Subse quently a contract was r.vcu to William B. Hays, which has since been transferred to the Sliaiton Coal Company. Atterv.ards a contract was made with the Cameron Coal Company, of Kew York, an1 a com puny ot New York, called Westmoreland and New York Coal Company. The Westmoiclund county coal has always been con sidered the bent in the State; the Pennsylvania and shalton conies from the tamo vein. The contracts are in wriiine. A vote of the whol Hoard makes the contract. Proposals are handed in and read openly at the Board. Wit ness could not tell the number of men required at the Point Breeze Work bat could furnish them at the next meeting of Conitniltee. Mr. William K. I'ark is the Assistant Engineer; John lieckindortf has charge of the Market Street Works; A. Meyers at Spring Garden; nnd John Baker at Manayunk, and all are under the control of the Chief Engineer. Witness could not tell whether there had been any sur plus of hands at the Point Breeze tVorks. At one time it appeared there were more yard hands than was necessary: but on calling the attention ot the Assistant Engineer to the fact, they were discharged; this, to the witness' knowledge, did not occur at any of the other works; could not tell how many had been dis chareed. The Engineer was directed, tioon after Mr. Park went to the works a little over a year ago to curtail the eipeuses as much as pos MDle. He did not know of hands beinsr kepton the pay-roll when there was nothing for them to do; when the retorts are taken down, the hands leave vntil they are put up again; iron and clay retorts arc used; at Point Breeze they are all iron. , The Trustees were led to believe that clay retorts were the cheapest, and the Board is now haviug a building put up for clay retorts; are now putting three ciay retorts to a bench and live iron ones. SHlnman & Ellis supplied retorts when witness became President. At present Fulton & Co., Morris, Tar-leer fc Co., and Mr. Oram are furnishing them. The clay retorts were purchased in New York; could not tell the amount expended for retorts without rc ierrinir to books; requests were sent to all the large foundries asking them to send bids, and the contracts were made by the Board, an i they are all in writing. The couli actors at present are Morris, Tusker & Morris and Mr. Oram. Stilcman fc Ellis had the com met when witness became President; they made a bad retort at the time, which was a loss to them; knew no thing ahout the stop-cock boxes; Mr. Cresswell lias uirnisncd most of the c,st ngs for the tops ot them; the Trust is supplied with meters irom all the meter works in the city; a resolu tion was passed by the Bo-ird directing that eacn estauiisnmcni suouia nave tneir propor tion; there had been complaints that some manufacturers got more than others, and hence the resolution; tli prices are unitortn; the tire Dries are purcnaseci n.y me uinct tiuineer; no ym uls are opened lor them; a number of parues have been tiiruiahiag inera; the bills for the brick are examined every mouth; all bills are referred to the appropriate committees, in dorsed tirst by the Chief Eiieineer, and theu by a majority of the Committee; they are tlitn passed by the Board, and utter they are paid they are examined by the President of the Board; the sub-conuuittees are supposed lo examine the bills alter beiuir indorsed by the Chief; bills have been laid over and returned lor correction. 0. l)o you know of any Trustee, agent, or em ployesut tke Works beiicj iiitL-rebted, directly or indirectly, tn any contract tor co.ti or other un plies to the Works? A. I kuo .v ot nunc. y. Do you know whether any ot t;ie present or former members ot the Hoard ot trustees are luteresln in any coal company that luruihes the Works with coal? A. I have heard that some ol the lorincr Trustees weie iutere-.ted in the Pennsyl vania Coal Company, and I have heard of n Trustee, now in the Bour 1, h iving stock: in th e the 1 yere Shattou Coal Company. 4!,0U0 tons ot eoul we purchased irom the Cameron Coal Compa Due ol tne omcers oi tue company trom New York neeottated the contract for the coal; he (the agent) otlcivd to lurmsh it lor lt-sp than coal could be obtained : irom the Pennsylvania or Westmoreland, and that wa the reason he uot the contract. The agent introduced himself to the Board. The price paid lor it was about $9 or Sjpii-oU per ton; there was no agent in this city representing the C.t'ue ron Coal Company; wheu they commenced to deliver the coal they employed liobcrt S. Garri son, of this city, us an asrent. The coal his been reported as good by the empluyes of the Trust Nathan Ililles, a member of the Board, and in the coal buniness, says it is good, though it looks bad; the Engineer has been docking the company ten per cent, when the coal is deli rrdet; it is generally mixed with harder r Tul wheii ?" i8 mii(i0' The Chief Engineer or assistants could ttiS P11 lUc lulonuatluu nece eary in reference to it. ,.,; Q. Do you know whethel any of the Trustees liave occupied or appropriated any property belonging to the trust for their own use? A. I lo not, with but one excepiion; a step ladder vi as sent to mv house, without my knowledge, and I directed the Ens-iuefr to have It taken away. Q. Do you know whether any of the Trustees have been paid for services rendered as Trustees? A. 1 know of no case, except the one reported upon by the Committee on Law of Councils. Q. Do you know of any member ot Councils who is interested iu any &ale or contract for supplies, or receiving niouey from the Trust ? A. I have known members of Councils to fur nish tne Trust with materials and supplies. I retiised at one time to si en a bill held by Mr. Crefswell, a member of Council, but when the rr.nrt decided that the Gas Trust was not a Department of the city, the hill wis paid. r What material is now turntshed oy mem hers of Councils? A. Casting and leather Luuds. O. Lo jou consider the Chief Euiaeer conif ctent for the position ? A. I led adelicacy in miswering tho question, as ne was not my choice at the time he was elected; I believe him to be honest. O. Do the B lard have entertain ments at their meetings? A. At every meeting they have something to nt aud to drink, and a ciear, a ctif-tom that has been lonj in voue; Mr. ProBser supplies the edibles; could not tell how much the ieeds or cigars cost annun.ly; have no knowledge of any caucus of the mem bers of the Board being held at Poiut Breeze on Sunday; he thought the Works were economi cally managed; a number of hands that vere considered useless have been discharged; don't Know oi any aoiiscs at tne pre.-ent nine; lacre were home, but they have been rectined. The responsibility should rest iidoii the Chief Engineer; he is, coii pellcd to employ incorupe Uut men, it they are recommended by the Trus tees. Etich one of ihe Trustees has cue-twelfth of the appointments, and if the Tutees were to send en incompetent man, the Cliiot r;ngineer would have to employ him, and it rest, with the Affibtant Engineer to tind out whether the man was competent; there are men at the Woiks that have been there for ears, and none have been discharged without cause. When ihj political chanee took place in tue Board, a laree number ot men were removed. He did not think it ne cessary for the Chief Enaineer to be a scientific man; the manufacture of gas was under the charge of experienced tort-men; the present Cniel spends a an-at deal ol time at the Works, and trirs to save where ho can. Mr. Grav, one of tho Committer, asked Mr. Jones it he believed that the Ch et Eug neer was a competent man, aud qualified lor tne nosi.lon. Mr. Jones did not ieel at liberty to answer the question. llie examination was tnen con inued. la Chiel Enaineer reports to the Committee when new works ore required. y. How can tne Chict recommend new works without haviug a knowledge oi the manufacture ol gas r A. The Chief Engineer does know something about the biiMuesf-; it cost more to manufacture gas at Poiut ilreeze than at Market street, because wnge9 Bre higher at the former; he be lieved that the Trustees were doing everything in their pow er to m insge the Works properly, and lor the beuetit ol the city. Mr. Gray stated that he had understool that fourmemotrs of the Trust were candidates lor Bow otllcjs, aud he desired to know whether they could not use the Trust lor their benefit pol'tically. Mr. Jones replied that he had heard one of them say that he would withdraw as a candi date if the others would do so; if a politician wants a good oince, lie will work lor it; the only way to change the matter is by electing men who do not seek ofiice. A communication was received from the Board of Trustees, stating that the books of the Trust will be at the disposal of the Committee at any lime when not needed for the transaction 6t business. Convention of j'iuemkn. In pursuance of a call ol the Mechanic Steam Firj Enirine Company, a convention of tiremeu assembled at the hall of their engine house last evening.
