Charles Mathers had a hearing belore Alderman Beitler, yesterday aiternoon, charged with the larceny ol about $300, the property ol Mr. Henry Mathers, his step-brother, living in the rear ol No. 1424 iii hi auet-i, ami wuu setnng nre to the House with Intuttf In ftiiM.l I,.- mi. I fendant was arrested by Officers Koch and Leyrer, of Lieutenant John Spear's distrirt, and on his person was tounu two Ave dollar bills and some small change. At the hearing yester day, Mrs. Mathers testitied that on Monday alternoon, about tialt-jmst 2 o'clock, she leit her house in charge ol the defendant, who was then lying on a settee; she went shopping, and on her return, about a quarter of 4 o'clock, lound the house locked up aud discovered smoke issuing from the second-story window; the alarm ot nre was promptly given, and a number of hose cairiages were soon on the ground; the flames were speedily extinguished. It was ascertained that the tire originated in the chest which contained the money, which was partially destroyed, and then communicated to the bed, where the Hames were extinguished, alter destroying some of the bed-clothes. The money, $300, was miss ing. Miss Louis Erhait testitied that on Mon day alternoon she called on her sister (Mrs. Mathers), at No. 1424 lirinton street, to go a shopping with her. She lound the door locked, and then opened the shutters to ascertain if any person was in the house. Who heard somebody in the second story, aud, inquiring who was there, received an answer troni the defendant. V."r.?ss was informed that her sister had lust le t. Miss Erhart then stepped around the corner and found her sister in conversation with, a neighbor. Having finished shopping:, she re turned to find the house on fire. Henry Hubert testified that the kev of Mrs. Mathers' resi dence was left at h'.s dwelling by the defendant, who did not remain mauy minutes, but stated that he was in a hurry, and then went away. Not many minutes elapsed belore the alarm of fire was given. Mr. Henry Mathers testified that Charles lived with him for about twenty-two weeks; that he was a carpet-weaver, but re cently had been out of work; the prisoner told witness on Sunday lust that ho was out of money. The prisouer was committed for trial. Belore Alderman Lutz, jesterday, a tiunl hear ing was had in the prosecution growing out of the riot, on Sunday afternoon, near Ninth and Cantwell streets, which resulted in the shooting of Joseph 8teele, a snmll bov, as alleged, bv Mr Cook. There were three' defendants, Jaine Bunttn, Hugh Moonej. and Mr. Cook. Tho tes timony showed that the riotiug was begun by a gang of younar men, and that the eun was not discharged by Cook until alter he was attacked. The intention was to Bnoot one of the rioters but the load took effect in the arm of the, boy Steele, shattering it badly. Bunfln was dis charged, as the evidence did not connect him with the afiair. Moouey and Cook were held for their appearance at Court. ( Samuel McMullen, alias Henry Black, , was held in one thousand dollars bad by Aldeiman : Holmes, upon thechargeol bigamy. Both wives were present, and the latter, Mary duff,1 was married to McMullen during his furlough from his ship, about a year a'ter his first marriage Mury Clutf, alias Mary Del any, was held in filteen kundred dollars bail to answer; the charges of bigamy and perjury, she having sworn at a previous hearing that she was not married to Samutl McMullen. , Two lads employed in the m'll of J. The exhibition of vegetables and fruit, especially strawberries, was very choice, and exceedingly tempting to the palate. Boat Capsized. Yesterday afternoon a skiff, w hich was fastened to the siern of a canal boat, and w hich contained two men and a boy w as capsized off Port Richmond by the round ing tool the canal boat, and the men aud bov were precipitated into the river. The steam tug Rescue went to their assistance, and suc ceeded in rescuing the two men, the boy being drowned. His body was not recovered. He was eight years old, and belonged to Holmes burg. Coroner's Inquest. An inquest waa held on the body of the man who was run over and killed by the through train to New York, at Thirty-first and Market streets, as mentioned in our edition ot yesterday. A verdict according to the facts was rendered. A through ticket on the Pennsylvania Railroad to Cincinnati was found in one of his pockets. On his drawers the namo "T. Coskatem" was priuted. The Coroner took charge ot the body. On a Visit op Inspection. Mr. W. N. Ogden. a member of the Pitisburg City Council, and Mr. William Hare, Chief Eugiueer of the Pittsburg Fire Department, arrived in this city yesterday alternoon. Their object is to inspect our system of police and fire-alarm telegraphing. They will visit the different offices to-dav for that purpose in company with Mr. D. R. Walker, the assistant superintendent of the department in this city. In Service Here Again. The steam enpine ot tho Hibernla Engine Company, o lo-g in the service of the Government, has, by the action ot the Board of Directors of the Com pany, been placed in service here. Mr. John Eischman, re siding at No. 1334 Warnock street, died last evening lrom the effects of burns received the evening previous, while filling a coal oil lamp too near a light. A Large Collection.
