LICHT READING. A NEW EDITION OF DON QUIXOTE TAflE. He Attacks the Gas Works. "MY GOOD SIRS, DIDN'T I TELL YOU TO HAVE CARE, IT IS ONLY A WIND-rm'fl." We have all noticed, no doubt, when tpending an evening at our different friends' houes, the words "No Trust" over his sideboard, put in a position to command, if not respect, at least attention. "Trust" is generally a bad thinp, but when it is a Gas Trust it is decidedly bad, as Colonel Page or any other gentleman acquainted with the subject will tell you, and it is a thing o bad that it is not to be made light of, particu larly with the present Burners. Some of our crochcty citizens have had a notion in their heads lately that perhaps things in the Gas Office could be improved, if the Gas Burners couldn't, and they thought that either the lamps should be lighter or else their bills should; and as there was no tax on the quality of the gas, as there is on sugar, they would like to have it first class, as they paid a "first class" price. With this very sensible objccl in view (we don't mean Mr. Manuel), Colonel Page offered a resolution in Select Council to appoint a com mittee of five to examine into the works and workings of the Trust at Point Breeze, which soon, however.turned into a regular blow with no point at all. Colonel Page having been made chairman of the Committee, proceeded to busi ness. He summoned the Chief Gas Retort of the works before him, a Mr. Manuel, who was sup posed to run the affair. If the Committee had previously a poor cpinion of the Gasometers, or any other part of the Works, they must have had a poorer one or the Retorts, as furnished by Mr. Manuel, to some of the Committee's questions. He was told to step to the trout of the Chair man's desk and swear, and although mad enough to do it, and under other circumstances would have done it. he flatly refused. He then com menced a vocal "mill" with the Chairman, etriking wildly, showing considerable skill in "feints" and "parries," but as the Don strikes straight from the shoulder, the man of gas was knocked off his oratorical pins on the third round. We would here remark that the Don is s hard-working man, and is notarruid of Manuel labor. TDK DON WITH IDE SUBJECT IN CHANCERY. Mr. Manuel denounced the investigation as personal, and that it had commenced fitteen years ago. If that is the case, it shows a very slow course of proceedings on the part of the investigators, and It is time they were changed. Sancho Hopkins asked Mr. Manuel if he would eien a "statement'' the Clerk had prepared. Mr, Manuel said he would sign nothing, which was a very bad sign for the Committee. Mr. Manuel said he understood his position ; he, too, was a member of Council, and he was going to talk, He would make a statement, but he wouldn't testify. He would Bay words, but he wouldn't put his name to tnem. In fact, he was no "Siga Manual." Mr. Manuel said further that this was was no eubpeena, and be was not obliged to be here, Lawyers ought to know what a subpuma is , , r . i . , . i ... uoionej ruga hh&i'u iur. maniel U ne was a lawyer. He said, yes. Then, said the Colonel, fcavo you read Coke ? No, said the iias man, we Have black coke, and I've sold hundreds of bushels of it. The Committee seeing that he knew the ropes, concluded they would ask some questions, and Mr. Manuel could answer them or'aot, just as be pleased. Question. Immediately after these questions Mr. Manuel left. The Don snid it seemed useless to have witnesses who were not obliged to answer. The authority to t ike testimony is inoperative without power to commit for contempt. If the example of Mr. Jliiuuel is to be imitated they would all leave, and if the people wanted more light, they mu-t get better Gas Holders. TUB COMMITTEE YIEWINO THE SUBJECT ON ALL SIDES.
