    SUBLIME SPECTACLE.
A Colnmn of FlrOsj Thoassmd r Ita

Ave Lone
A let of lava ol more stupendous proportion
than any uver conceived ol In ascribed by Mr.
oan, in the Honolulu Enrnd, of February, In
his account ol ibe eruption ot Manua Loa, on
the Island of Hawaii:
The eruption commenced near the summit of
ino mountain, and only tive or mx mile south
east of the eruption ol 1843. For two day this
summit crater sent don its burning Moods
along the northwestern slope ol the mountain;
then suddenly the valve closed; ami tho great
furnace apparently ceased blast. After thirty
six hours the fusiti was seen bursting out of the
eastern side ot the mountain, about midway
from tho top to tho bHse.
It would seem that tho summit lva had found
a subterranean tuunel, for hall way down tlie
mountain, wben commit to a weak point, or
meetintt with somo obstruction, it burst out
vertically, Bending a column of Incandescent
fusia 1000 tect into the air. This Ore let was
about 100 feet In diameter, and It wns sustaim-d
for twenty days and nights, varying In heiuht
Irom GOO to 1000 leet. luo diBBcrftement Irotn
tbe mountain slilo was o'len with territic explo
sions, which shook the hills, aud with detona
tions which wtrn heara forty miles. This
column ot liquid tiro was anobiectol surpass
ing brilliancy, ot intense and awlul grandeur.
As the Jet lHHiied troin the awltil oritice it
was at white heat. Ah it ascended higher
and hiKher, it reddi-ned like fresh blood, d-ep-enicir
its color, until, in its descent, much ot
it atsumed the color of clotted pore.
In a low days it bad raised a rono some H00
feet high around the burning orifice, and. ai tho
showers ot bumlntr minerals lell in livid tor
rents upoD the cone, it became one vat heap of
plowing coals, flushing and quivenntj with rest
less aclion, and fscuiiiiitr out tbe hent of ten
thousand furnaces m tull blast. Tho flrueles
in disgorging the fiery masse1, the upward rush
of the column, the force which raised it ono
thousand vertical feet, and the continuous full
ing back ot thousand; of tons of mineral fusia
into the throat of the crater, and over a cone of
p'owiug coals one mile in circumference, was a
eight to iuspire awe and terror, attended with
explosive shocks which seemed to rend tho
mural ribs of the mountain, and sounds to
waken the dead and startle tDe spirits in Hades.
From this louutain a river of fire went rushing
aud leaping down the mountain with atna, itg
velocity, tilling up basins and ravines, dashing
tiver lirecpices, and exploiting rocks, until It
reached the forests at tne base of the mountain,
wbcie it burned its fiery way, consuming the
jungle, evapoia iog the water ot tho streams
and pools, cuttiue down the trees, and sending
up clouos of smoke in luurky columns of fleecy
wreaths to heaven.
All Eastern Hawaii was a sheet of light, and
our nieht was turued into day. So great was
tho illumination at night, that one could read
without a lamp, and labor, ttavelliug, and recrea
tion might go on as in ouytime. Mariners at
sea saw the light at two hundred mili-a distance.
It was a pyrotechnicHl display more magnificent
aud marvellous that: was made by an early
mouaicn. In the dvtime the atmosphere for
thousands of square miles would bo filled with
a murky haze, through which the sunbeams
shed a pale and sickly light. Smoke, steam,
gase9, ashes, cindere, furnace, or cupillary or
filamentary or vitrifications, Bometlmes soread
lng out like a tan, sometimes careering in
swift currents upon the wind, or gyrating in
ever-chaneiug colors in the fitful breVzes. The
point from which the tire fountain issued is
10,000 feet above the level of the sea, thus mak
ing the igneous pillar a distinct object of observa
tion along tho whole eastern coast of Hawaii.
During the eruption the writer made an excur
sion to tho source. Alter three days of hard
struggle in the jungle and over tho fields, ridges,
and bills of brisiling tcoria, he arrived near sun
set at the field of action. All night long he
stood as near ihe glowing pillar as the vehement
heat would allow, listening to the startling ex
plosions and th? awful roar of the molten
column, as it rushed upward 1000 feel and fell
buck in a fiery avalanche which made the moun
tains tremble. It was such a scene as lew
mortals ever witnessed.
There was no sleep for the spectator. The
fierce, red plaJe, the subterraneous mutterings
and smugglings, the rapid explosion of cases,
the rushes and roar, the sudden and startling
bursts, as ol crashing thunder all, all were nwe
inspiring, and all combined to reuder the suene
one of Indescribable brilliancy and terrible sub
limity. The rivers of fire from the mountain
flowed about thirty-five miles and stopped within
ten miles of Hilo. Had tho fountain played ten
days longer, it would probably have reached the
shore.
