M, Noblo, a wedish enpinoor, has succodod in pi lying it to a very important brnnoli ol his an, nuim lv blasting. 1'rom ft paper adarosiod by him to the Academy ot Sciences we learn that tho c.nol dvantaite which this subetanco, composed of oue part ot jriyconue and three parts of nunc acid, pos sesses, is that it requires a much smaller hole or chamber than punpowdor dues, the siength ot the latter being scatoely one-tenth ol the former. Hence li e miner s worir, wnicn, Becoming ro the narduoas of the rock, represents tumo five to twenty times the power of the gunpowder used, is so short Uiat the cost ot blasting is olton reduced bv fifty pjr cent. The process is very easy. If the chamber ot the mine presents fissures, it mutt be lined with clay to make it watei-tiKht; this done, ti e nitro glycenuo is poured in, the water alter it, which, being the fighter liquid, remains at tho top. A slow inatoh, with a weli-charifed percussion cap at oue end, is then introduced into tho nitroglycerine. Tho mine iray tbente spmng by lighting the match; there being no need of tamping. , One volume of tho oil produces, in combustion, 664 volumes of hvdrwen, 4G!) volumes curbonio acid, S volumes oxveen, 5U6 volumes niiiogon. One ro'nme thus suddonly expands to nearly one thou and three bundled times its original spuco, pro ducins an irresi-tibi dinruptivo torco. as the ex pancivo torco is greater than that ot eunpowder, smaller holi g and lower charges will bo required. The oil is Binipl, pourod into tho drill hoi. s and wiiter-tluhtsaloty-lust attached, and tho holestopped with sand or water. It is olton pourod through water into the ho.es, and as it does not, like glyce rine, mix with water, being hcuvy, It sinks to tbe bottom and the wa'er above serves as a plu. It tho blasting oil to frozen it must be hundled with care, as an engineer in (Jermnnv found to his cost whoa trying to break up some irozen p'ccos with his pick. It could be frozen in tin cases ot proper size, and in troduced in the samo manner thai gun cotton is. lLe question whether nitroglycerine undergoes spontaneous decomposition or not id by no ineaai tettlcd. It is well known thai gun cotton.it not proj er y washed, and if exposed even to diffused light, undergoes spontaneous decomposition, and as recent instances 01 explosion iu tuis city, San Fran cisco, and now at 1'anama. are attribute l to nitro glycerine, it is neceratry 10 be cautious about storing quantities ol the oh in cities until tho mutter is suth- cieiiuy iuveuKaieu. jm. i . . A SAFE ROBBED BY BOYS. A Tin Box Contalulutf Over 81700 Stolen Arrent of tue Thievex ana Recovery f m Portion of tbe Property. On the morninp of the 9th inst. a tin box con taininp $1400 in gold, aeold certificate for $300, $06 in Treasury notes, $15 in revenue stamps, and S305 in fractional currency (altogether of the value of $17b4-05), was stolen lrom the rafe ot Thomas Irwin's Boris, brokers, at No. 19 Broad street. It has since been ascerteined that on the morning in question two boys named Henry Ketter and John ilcCullotign, who are employed by Black & Hpauldiner, havlnjr a desk in the game room as the owners ol the property, re the thieves. McCulloueu, who was arrested soon alter the robbery, finally conlesKed that on the evening in question, on returning from the post office at 6 o'clock, they haviug by some means become possessed of tho ward which enabled them to wnqo the fastenings ot the combination lock with which the safe was fitted, entered the olhce, opened the sale, and abstracted the box containing the property. This was conveyed by the boys to the cellar of the house occupied by Henry's mother, No. 310 Worth street, and there secreted. Henry took all the treasury notes, $5 of which he gave to John, and $50 to his mother for board. The revenue stumps were sold by John lor $11, and the amount given to Henry, fcioon alter the rubbery the boys were arrested by Detective Eunice, but alter being Incarce rated lor two days, and no evidence appearing airuinBt them, were discharged. At this time the tin-box containing the money was in th-. cellar of the house above mentioned. Sergeant Cancer, ot the Filtietti (Brooklyn) Precinct, then took the matter in hand, and rearrested McCul lotiiih, and he couicsed to tbe above statement ot fuels. Iu the meantime Ketler hud made the ac quaintance ot two boys named Henry Scully and Robert llalhday, and they, by meaiis of threats ol denouncing him to the officer, learned where the box was Becreted. Alter the arrest of Ketter, when the above (acts became known Sergeant Caster searched tho house, and found that the box bud been removed. He then ar rested Scully and Hallnday on sugpicion of steal ing tne box. Tney, however, declare that they kaow nothinar about iu fcitill another b iv named James McUee, residing at No. 221 Third street, was arrested, and he states that Scully and Halladay gave him $42. which they said was part of the proceeds ot the sale ot ;hf gold. The $.j0 given by Ketter to his mother has been recovered, totrsther with $42 from MctJee $42-55 from Scully, and $12-76 from Halladay! McGee is held as a witness. Wediippday Inst, besides being Ash Wednesday Hint Valentine day, wai the ttret ot the nrw year among tne C'hinene ol this city. I believe I have tcld you that thfi are from 6000 to 10,000 ol the moon-eed Celestials in this cliy. Among them are some very wealthy ami respectable nierchauta, and the "doings" ot the New Year holi()u3s (four day?) hove been quite interesting. Fireworks and crackers have been rattling in all parts of the city, but more especially in that pnrtof the town known as China-town, where moat ol the "Johns" reside. Many of these nieichnnls kept open house, and received their white iriends with as much dignity and cere mcny as "any other man." C'hampiiiriio and other wines were expended with liberality. ; The tcmplo was opened to all Melicun visitor who would honor them with their presence, and I, among others, "honored" them wiih a call. The building is situated in a miserable dirty alley, and is a small building, three stories in height. The first story seems to be occupied as a sleeping and fctnoking department. There were a number ol the "Johns" lingering In bliss ful repose upon tho floor, while others were en joying the luxury of asmoke. Tbe strong fumes ot opium which they smoke not having a salu tary ellect upon my olfactory organs, I was obliged to teat a hasty retreat, and forthwith niountod to the second story. All about this room wire characters In the Chinese language, briHiin.t lights wero suspended from the ceiling, uiid incense burned upon the several altars w hero were reared the gods whom they womUip. On one hide were arranged standards or poles upon which were banners. These standards were surrounded with Ucnres, carved from brass, in the hupc ot dragons and monstrosi ties of various forins. Near this was reared nn altar or ptdettal where an ugly looking animal ol the diugon species received the homage ol the "Johns." Aiotiiid the "Hnimnle'' were some bcantttul specimens of Chinese handiwork, con-sii-tins ot carved wood, embroidered work, and artilicial flowers, tbe whole being under a canopy of carved wood-work, handsomely gilded with gold, silver, and urmine. Be; ore ihis nondescript idol were placed plates containing oranges, candie, and cupa ol tea, L'lvcn as an oilering; but the gentle "pansy" with the immense mouth and open )aws touched thi m not. . In auither porion of ihc room was placed a Inrge number, one hundrpd or more, small figures carved from bracts, reprcriouting Chinese in various attitudes and postures. 1 inferred that this was some historical representation. There were severul spreads of most exquisite fmbroidery work, the figures being of tho dragon and mermaid order, handsomely wronirht in gold and silver, upon heavy scarlet silk. These were ollercd lor sale at $70 each. The third ttory is the most important one, for here in all his majesty and plory sits the "Josh" of Joshes, Tong Gee. Ho is ajoliy, fat, and seemingly a very good natured old lellow; his mouth is rather larger than is necessary for a mortal to possets, and he grins constantly. He is a wooden roan, but a great man among tbe Chinese. His complexio n Is rather darker than that oi his devotees, being ot a dark brown. Ho sports a moustache of huge size. lie also hud several piates of oranires, candies, and a pot ot tea beloie him. Whether it happened to be his lunch hour or not, 1 did not ascertain. Ho was seated under a cauopy of richly embroidered silks, carved wood-work, and artificial Chinese flowers, all arranged with thnt tnte and skill which the Chinese alone possess. There was also a piece ot embroidery work here which is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. It w a9 made iu China, and exported to this country expressly lor the temple. As tar as my observa tions extended, 1 juaue that tho Chinese may have no service. There was a large number present, but they seemed to be as unconcerned as their visitors. Cor.
