Coroner's Inquest. The Coroner yos terdav hold an inquest on Letitm L. Lister, who died trom the effects ot chlorolorm, administered by W. VV. Slack, dentist, in Federal street, below Sixth. Dr. Slack testified that the deceased had call od upon him lor the purpose of having? teeth extracted, and preferred inhaling chloroform to nitrous oxide gas; she said she had taken chloro form before, and was not a'raid to take it again; he administered chloroform in the usual man ner; the quantity was small; he had given twice as much on other occasions without any bad ellect; alter she had inhaled the chloroform, and as he was about to bein operations, he noticed slight spasmodic movements and change of countenance, and immediately used every etlort to revive the patient, but without avail. Dr. Slack stated that he had been in the prac tice of administering chloroform, when called' lor, durinn seven years, and had assisted at its administration live year?, without accident. Dr. Shapletgh testitied that he had male a pest mortem examination of deceased. There was no (iiseae of any internal organ; brain, heart, lungs, liver, etc., were sound: a slight eongestion ot the Jungs and bronchial tubes was" observable; there was nothing to conflict with the supposition that death resulted from the use of chlorolorm; death might have, been caused by the chloroform administered., lr. fchapleieh said that the best anesthetic was ' nitrous oxide; after that, ether, and then chlorolorm. The latter had been exclusively used in the army during tne late war, and was perhaps almost as sale as any for general pur poses. It is prclerred In practice, for iis potency, and because it does not stimulate. In propor tion as ausesthetics stimulate, he thought they were dangerous. Some people were peculiarly' constituted, and might be more powerlully affected than others. Ho crave instances of ro bust persons being powerlully affected by com paratively harmless drugs. In iutal cases of inhalation, death resulted very suddenly, either lrom aphjxla or stoppage of the heart's action. The Inry gave a verdict that Letitla L. Lister died from the effects of chlorolorm administered by W. W. Slack, at her leqnest, for the purpose of having some teeth extracteJ, and trom the evidence, the said chlorolorm was given in a small quantity, and in the usual manner. The Had effects ol intoxicating beverages were Illustrated yesterday evening, about 6 o'clock, in a restau rant, whose proprietor is named Stewart, at the corner of Kilt h and Walnut streets. A yoilaf man named William B. Fries, who exhibits two honorable discharges frotu the army, entered the restaurant in question, and, after a few words with the bartender, drew two pistols, one in erch hand, and tired three shots In rapid sue cession. The bartender is named Frederick; Robinson. Only one of the shots took elTeci, and this did not do so mortally.- The ball entered at the base of the -nose, parsed downward, and emerged below the )aw. The wounded man sank instantly.- . The shooting was done so quickly that nobody had time to interfere.' Tho saloon is very respectably conducted, and the proprietor knew nothing of any dilflculty in whv h his bar keeper was engaged. Alderman Vougherty happened to be taking his supper tlw?ro at the time. Ho disarmed the holder of the pistols, and conducted him unresisting to trie Station House, cori.er ol Filth and Chrsntit streets. The wounded man was taken to his place of resi dence, close In the vicinity, No. 531 l'owell street. Fries made a singular statement when at the Station House. He claimed that Robinson had ' seduced his sitter; but at the same time admitted that she had a child four years old, of which Robinson was the lather. He expressed but one reirrct that he had not killed Robinson out right. According to his own statement, he has Btnt the lat three days in a dcbuuch. He has been absent in tho army since the w ar began, and claims that it was only within a few days past that he knew of the late that had befallen his sister. A tormnl investigation of tho case will proba bly develop further particulars. It is said that the prisoner Is one among other heirs to an ex tensive estate In Germany, of which a partition will be made in the ensuing autumn. It is evl dent that alcoholic stimulus prompted the act When arreted, Fries was still tar from sober. He informed our reporter that some time aixo ho deserted liotu the army to shoot Robinson, but returned, unable to find him. Oeemaxtottn Freedmen's Aid Asso ciation. Thou sparest when we deserve to perish. Spare us, good Lord; spare Thy people, and let not this calamity come upon us. May the hearts of the people be turned unto Thee in repeutaftce and prayer, thtrt Thou may have compassion upon us and deliver us. But If it please Thee that this visitation overtake us, give us grace to meet Thy will iu the true faith and love, in the pre cious hope and consolation of Thy dear children. May the hearts of the disobedient be turned to the wisdom of the lust; and may the affections of Thy people be the more steadfastly sot on Thy eternal blessedness and glory. May our trust be placed, in Thee as our refmre and strength a very present help in trouble that we, Thy servants, being hurt by no tribulalions, may not be afraid for any terror by night or for the arrow that tlieth by day, but may evermore ' give thanks unto Thee, the God of our salva tion, through Jesus Christ our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen. . A Sad Story from the Soath. "The Monroe (La.) Telegraph of a recent date has the following: "A couple of gentlemen living on Bumf river were out iiuuting hogs, when becoming tirod they dismounted, and hitching their horses, lay down to sleep ueur an old tree on Hro. Eiirht days alter this a neighbor was hunt'ug in the vicinity, when, attracted by the barking of his dog, which would come to no calls, he went to the spot where the men lay down, and found that the tree had fallen across the bead of one and across the chest ot the other. "One of the horses had bnken loose, the other was still standing where, elcht duys be lore, he had been tied. One ot the uentlemen, a Mr. Day, leaves a wile and six children in dis tressed circumstances. The wife's history has been a sad one. The conscript authorities, always too loose or too Ticid, dragired her tlrst husband, from homeland sent hiui to Stireve port iu a car. "Hi' wile followed just in titne to see him conscripted by death. She returned home, and in about a week had her house and everything the possessed, but a wheel, a saddle, and a pair 01 cards, burned up. Alter frequeut importuni ties she iunriied Mr. Dav, wdo was a widower with three children, which, added to her own, made t-ix. Thi'; heloless charge is now lell upon htr hands." i A new caterer tor a public always hungry alter novelties Is lini now taking Pansbv storm. Ttilrich, the well-known mukerof tho wonderful anatomical models familiar to surgical profes sors all over 'the continent, as well as at the School of SI edicUie, has opened, on the Houle vard an exhibition of wax figures, grouix'd together like tableaux viva7it, aud of most lilf like appearance and character. One very striking group is of Rinaldo and Armidi; .an other, a perfect masterpiece of artistic eifec.t, represents Hercules and Omphale, the delicate beauty of the Lydian Queen standinat out in marvellous contrast with the brawny strength ol the Hero of Manv Labors. Another group represents a scene of torture of the Middle Ase, with a hortible viaor of verisimilitude absolutely terrifying. A portrait of the great aureeoa Dupuytren, dissecting: a body in the scene of his lont labors, the amphitheatre of the Paris School of Mediciue, surrounded by a group of students, though repulsive, is wouuerfullv lifelike, and reema to exercUe a eculiar fascination on the curiosity of tUe visitors.
