8 THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, APRIL .7, 1866, CITY INTELLIGENT, E For AMilxonal Local Item tve Third rage.) A Revolutionary Relio BKouanr to Liuut. A day or two slnoa soma worKinea ware employed In making an excavation in the cellar of Mr. William McNally'g liquor eatabllsh ment, Nop. 146 and 148 Water street, one door txtve Walnut, on the west Bide. Alter dV?Xinff to the depth of about two feet the spades of the workmen struck on something that would not yield to the force applied to the digeinn; uten sils. An examination proved that two pieces of artillery lay embedded In the cellar, which were quickly unearthed and Drought to Hifhu Tney are regular old-fashioned six-pounder, and, ot course, covered with ruHt to the depth of about hall aa Inch. Tb-y wore found resting on the Works of oak wood, underneath which ran a small stream of water. How they not there 1s a matter of conjecture: but the Inference fat that they are either pieces ol ordinance buried there by the American troops durine the Revo lution, and lust before the city of l'hilndelphia was occupied bv the British lorces, or else they constituted a portion ol a fortification that existed In that locality long before bricks and ni on a r were known on th3 shores of the Dela ware river. The position of the guns, as discovered, gives cok ring to the supi-o-itiou that they belonged to sonic ancient tortilieutions. They wro, ns far ns appearances indicated, rcjrularly mounted, one pointing north, and the other south, it is rstablitibcd bevond dispute, that they have been where they were lound, lor over tilty years; lor the deeds of the property ocnipiel and owned by Mr. MoNallv, where they were iound, states that the building was erected about the commencement of the present century. It cautiot be asccita'ned nhe'.her any buildinsr existed on the site, of the one where these guns were found prior to the erection of the present Oi:e, and the plain lulereuce is that lr they were not secreted in the cellar of some build 'ni? that s'ood duriug the "times that tried men's souls," then they belonged to some old (poisibly Dutch) fortitlcii tion. The semblance ot a crown can be dis tinctly traced on the breach ot one of the guns, and iticy are certainly highly intcrst'ii" relics of "An1 . : .... .,M mu myuv.' vurmg yo.nenttty th8 store where thev ivero found was visited bv a number of jiorsont, nnd the iclicsof a loriner generation were inspected with considerable interest. Life of Abraham . Lincoln. T. B. Petcfton, No. 306 (Jhesnut street. The present tiofraphy is a neatly executed and accurately conirlei work, and covers the ground which las not been touched by any other lile ot 1 lie great I rerident. While the space devoted to uis pub'.ic career is small, yet all the ceremonies of Lis death, funeral cortege, and ovations are Hven iiir mil r than ever before. The addresn ot the lion. George I3ancrlt is also included, the whole nuiking a volume ut once interesting and valuable. It is another evidence of the energy of the Messrs. Peterson. A Man of the World. By William Worth. T. B. Peterson, No. 306 Chesnut street. The pre sent volume is the most miadulteruted waste of pood paper and gilded binding that we have ever seen. If it was intended as a parody on this class of sensational novels, now 60 common, it would be a great suceess. But as it is the bimon pure, and not a sarcasm, we can only advise our readers to look at it as an imitation and enjoy it as a joke. Took to the Woods. Lydia Walker ia a mulatto girl. Lydii occupied the responsible position of a domestic in the family of Mr. CbaiK'S Lloyd, who resides in Delaware county. Lvdia went'to Mr. Lloyd's residence last Tues day, but suddenly left between two days. It was . discovered that "an overcoat and a quantity of ' ladies' underclothing belonging to the family accompanied Ljdia. ' It appears that, alter leav ing the house with the articles in queetion.Ljdia concealed herse1! in a patch of woods in the Twenty-fourth Ward during the entire day yes terday, with the intention, doubtless, of reach ing the city under cover of the night. The police, however, overhauled Lydia In the woods, and as she could not give a good account of hcr sell she was taken betoie Alderman Allen, where the above, facts were brought to light, and she was sent to Delaware county for trial. Death op a Olebbity. Most of our readers will remember Mr. Nellis, In connection with Barnum's Museum, nt Seventh and Ches nut streets. His specialty was .that he was born without arms, and had so carefully edu cated his leet, that he was able to perform with those members all that could be accomplished by more lortunate Individuals. He could use the pen and scissors very expertly writing an admirable hand, and cutting profiles with an accuracy that was perfectly wonderful. News lias been received announcing his sudden death by apoplexy in Bolivia, South America, on the 4th oi December last. He was a native ot New York, and was about 48 years oi age at the time of bis death. Fbkaks of an Inmate of the Alms house. A man named William Mullen was ar rested yesterday evening for an assault and bat tery with, intent to kill the door-tender ol the Almshouse. Mullen was an Inmate of the Alms bouse, and attempted to get out, when his pro press was checked by the door-tender. He (Mullen), then seized a chisel and attempted to stab the door-tender a struggle ensued, during which Mullen was overpowered, and was con sequently taken before Alderman Allen, who committed him to prison. Discharge Paper Found. During yes terday a soldier's discharge paper was found in the street, and taken to the Mavor's Oflieo. The paper contained the name of Casper Rung, 9th Regiment, Ohio Infantry, Company F. It states Rung was discharged December 1st, 1862, by reason of enlisting in the 4th United States Ar tillery.
