Drexel & Co., on Thursday, was arretted early yesterday morning, at his resi dence, in the upper piirt of the city, and had a bearing before Recorder Kneu. James KU'y, keeper ot a public house at No. 134 South Elihtb Street, teBtified that the de fendant frequents his place, and that the signa ture to the check was not genuine. Charles N. Robinson, In the office of Drexel & Co., identi Hcd the defendant as the preen ter of the check, which he said was filled up in the office alter it was ascertained what Amount was rod u I rod to obtain $2000 in gold. Defendant was told to go 1 to the Commercial Bank, on which the check was drawn, and pet the money, instead of which he returned in a few minutes, with It marked "eootl." This did not satiety Mr. Kobinsonand while one of the clerks went to tho bunk to make Inquiry of the Paying Teller, the man lelt the office. 0. C. Montgomery, Paying Teller of the Commercial Hank, testified that the mark "pood" on the check was not done by him. Jo seph Wnlz, grocer, tcstided that he advanced twenty-live tlolliirs on a eity dollar check to the defendant, which purported tj have been drann by Jauics Collins, of Hpriug G' anion Ftrect. Mr. Collins testified that the cheek wa a tirirei y. Janice Kiley whh reeiilled. and testified thut n'prf'inlHKury note, with hia signature to it, found in the possession of Watt, wna a forgery. Watt was asked if he had anything to sav to the 'harpes, and he replied that he did not writu Ihe signatures to the checks, but he decliued to say who did it. He was held to bail to answer. CosDVCTon in TEoruLK. A conductof of the Union Passenger Railroad, named (i. W. Reined, has been uriesteu on the charge of passing counterfeit cuircncy. Cue of the wlt-iies-se, Mr. Tcrwilger, said that he rodo in one of the cars of the Union line to the Kensington depot. Ihe conductor pave him change lor a a uurler, and in bo doing nave five counterfeit three cent notes and three pennies. It was said that the accused also missed five counterfeit . three cent notes. Mr. MeUrath, the President of the road, on being made acquainted with the fact, determined at once to investigate the matter, lie requested Mr. Terwilger to ride once more, w hicn w as done, when another coun terfeit three cent note was given, when the arrest followed. When taken into custody other counterfeit notes were found on his person, lie was required to furnish bud to answer at Court. Makiko Thieves. The detectives yes terday brought before Recorder Eneii two per sons, named Frederick C. Honey and Jacob Haines. They keep a junk shop in Parrish street, near Ninth. Toe Gcrmantown Railroad Company have been much annoyed by tho thoit of metal, brass boxes, bolts, couplings, and other paraphernalia ot their rolling stock. With, all the vigilance that could be exercised, tho ever attentive Superintendent, Mr. Wilson, has been unable to discover the manner in which the property disappeared. The defend ants in the present case were held for trial on a charge of receiving all tho property with guilty knowledge. EEBUit.DiNO the Track. Tho Girard Avenue Railway is now leased by the Fourth and Eighth streets company. Under the super intendence of the latter the whole track is being rebuilt. All the road bed is being removed and new foundations laid. The ties and sleepers are to be replaced with new timbers, and the old rails renewed. The rails of the Girard Aven,ue Railway weie of a peculiar pattern, with curved flanges. The heavy wheels of the steamers ana drays broke the fiances, and the front cracked them, until the rails along the entire route were almost destroyed. New rails of the ordinary pattern aro now being laid, and the work is pushing forward with unwonted spend. , A New Pilot Boat. At the ship-yard of Mr. J. W. Lynn, foot of Reed street, may be seen a pretty little clipper, built for a Delaware pilot boat, with a shape that bids fair to make her one of the fleetest of her craft. She is nearly finished, and will be launched early nest week. Her cabin acenmmodations will be for eight or ten persons, and will be the best that can be provided. She is to be called the Uenry Cope, after one ot our most prominent shipping mer chants. Her dimensions are: Length, 85 feet; beam, 20 feet 6 inches; hold, 8 feet. She is owned by Captain Harry Virden and others. ; Found Drowned. An unknown whi'e man was found drowned yesterday, off Smith's dock, in the Delaware, between Race and Vine streets. The body lacks an arm, and is sup posed to be that of a returned soldier. It was dreesed in army blouse and pants, white over and under-shirts and low shoes, with dark moustache and hair. The appearance of the body indicates maceration of at least sixty days. Its hcieht is five feet nine inches; the apparent age thirty ;earn. Highway Robbery. About 1 o'clock yesterday moraine, as Peter Knecht was walk ing in the neighborhood of Vine and Thirteenth streets, he was met by a man who asked him the time of night. lie drew out his watch, when the thiel at once snatched it from him and ran off. Pursuit was given, but the rogue proved too fleet of foot, and made his escape. Alleged Disorderly. A man named Jonn CollhiS, keeping a drlnkery in Sergeant street, between Tenth and Eleventh, was hold yesterday by Recorder Eueu, to answer the charge of maintaining a nuisance in the shape oi a disorderly house.
