The great Bale of paint ings at the Academy of Fine Arts yesterday at tracted a large and distinguished audience. The bidding was auimateu, and the sale was managed admirably by Mr. B. ticott, Jr., the well known art auctioneer. The prices obtained were fair, and the bidding showed a preat demand lor painiinps among our leading citizens. Ordinary "works do not bring unusual prices. Not five of the works sold last evening brought more than their cost. This evening a better and choice collection will be otlcrcd, numbering seventy eipht pieces in all. We would urge on all to go and fee the lemaining pictures at the Academy, as there may be some which they would like to possess at the current ratei. The demand lor so many valuable paintings shows the taste which has grown up in this c'ty lor the tine arts, and alter carefully scrutinizing the paintings before and during the sale, we can only express our pleasure that so correct a taste hHS been formed, and that the verdict announced in the sale agrees so well with the opinions of those who have the advantages of a thorough art education. The latter building was occupied by Adolph Indig as a clothing store, the tipper portion beinft used as a dwell ing. This buildin? was cntiruly burnt out, but. owing to the exertions of the firemen and others, a larcro portion of tho stock of clothing was saved. Mr. Indig has an Insurance of $2000, and his loss will be covered by his Insurance. Tho cigar store was considerably damaged, but the loss of Mr. Plate is more than covered by insurance. Another buildinor. No. 806. was occupied by Morris'H. Nalhanson, and was also a clothing store. The upper part of this building and also that of No. 308 wns occupied as a dwelling by Mr. Nathanson.
