Wbe the SherifT and hl friends entered the apartment the prisoner was utaadinff near tbe window, and look-in- tbroiich its bar, lie turned carelessly aroand, and extendli his right band to the Kheriir, (aid, in a sullen man ner snd low tone.of yoice:-"- "IIow do you do?" The latter now glanced at the reuiamder.of tbo party, then plucod ais foot on a email bench and bowed his head down ward. The Sheriff produced the death-warrant, and saidt "Mr. Berber, I have come this morning for the purpose of performing: nn exceedingly on plcahaut duty. 1 have with mo your death-war-rntit. sipnert by the Governor ol this Couiiuoa wealth, nxing-1 he time of your execution on tho !i7th dav of April ensuing, between the hours e)f 10 and 2 o'clock. The prisoner looked up and said; "Yer., I have beard oi it; yesterday ray father wits here, and he commuiiieated the lact to tue," The fchei iti then proceeded in a calm, dignified, and folemn manner, and in a voice ehghllyi treinnlous, to read the document that doomed the prisoner to an icnon.iuious death. During this time Berger retained the same position; he was callous, almost like a breathless statue; he was not atlccled in the least; not the slightest emotion wus apparent. The reading having been concluded, the SherifT broke the sileaee ay saying to the doomed couvict that he did not consider there was the lifrhtet hopo for a par don; not even lor a respite. He advlsd him to prepare to meet hn lato, apsariajj hist that he nefd not entertain any hope of executive clemency. Berger replied: "My ODly hopo now is ia Jesus. Mv spiritual ndvib'er, the Key. BIr. Inquiry was then made if his wife had been to see him recently, to wh'ch bo replied that "she had beeu there one day during the past week lor the Inat time." Sheriff Howell asrain urged him to make pre paration Tor his fate, desiring to impress aueu bit mind the oertninty of death. Ferrer made no reply. It is well known io our readers that the independent Order of Odd Fellows have had, for some time, in contemplation the erection of a ruuf niticeut Temple for the especial ue et the Order. A convention for this purpose has held several meetings, and have authorized a cetmaittee to apply tor a charter of inccrp nation. Tho ulaa agreed upon fer raising the means to build U an excellent oae, but tbe plan suggested tor ruisini; the new ball is decidedly obectiouable. It is proposed to have no stores, no lecture-room, and no ealoens in the new edlhee. These are all lauch needed in and out of the Order, and would yWd a revenue sullieient t defray iho immense expense of the new temple, and hence tUis actien of the Convention meets with decided opposition in the Order. A tiood hall I01 lectures iu the central portion of our city is now in constant demand. Many of onr lead ing st ieutttic and literary associations woull pay good rents lor the use ot sucn a hall on stated evening. Unless the-te adjuucU are placed In the new Temple, the rent of lode rooted must be placed at a very high hure, to raise a reve nue eullieient to delr'ay the expenses ol the building, withont attempting to pay the iutjrest on tue capital invested. The charter ol the Association now before the Legibla'ure is substantially a follows: Henry lioplnus, l). s. GTissincror, li.ra B. I'ratt. Christian Youug. A. McNutt, Philip Loivry, Jr., aim joun ti. juoxey are ia do corporators and a Board of Mantipers for the Association. Tlie last two named eentleruun have not the sanation ot the Conveiitien tor their appearance a? eor porniors. Tins section ignores nlike the Con vention, the Order, and the enacted law. It u contrnry to tbo wish and action of every delegate to the Temple Association according; to expressed e-piHion and vote. Of couree there is no chance f r the final pas SHife ot such a charter through the LegiHlature. The opposition to it would bo general.
