7. "The Press.". Responded to by Dr. Mac
kenzie. . Previous to the announcement of tho regular
toasts, the President prolleicd the health of
Mn.or-General Meade, which created mush en
thusiasm. After tho applu.ise had subsided.
General Meade arose and relumed his sincere
thanks tor the honor conieVr jd. When ho re
ceived an Invitation to be present, he asked nim
selt. the reason ne had been invited to a festival
ot that character, and could not answer tae ques
tion until I e sut down to the table, whim, from
the number of friends he saw around him, it
seemed to lii'u that all hit- triends belonged to
the Philadelphia Board of Brokers. He remem
bered two ollicer3 who were foimcrly members
of, the Hoard, arid who died in the service ot the
ceuntry, Major Henry J. Biddlo aid Colonel
Eichurd W. Wool worth. Iu iiotiolnir, all theso
things ho saw that there was some connection
between the army, or nunself as representing it,
and the Board of Brokers, and could theretore
understand why he had been invited to be pre
sent at the festivities of the evening.
General Meade closed his well-timed remarks
by congratulating tho-je present on tho close of
the war, and alluding in glowing terms to the
fact that the country was now united forever,
from the St. Lawrence to the Gulf ot Mexico.
Commodore Selfridae niado'U few remarks in
response to a toast to tho navy. His speech was
characterized with the modesty usually exhibited
utj u u v mi vvuuuituuvi iu iinv. uit iiuuioui iiv
paid a tribute to the United States Navy, and
expressed a desire to give satisfaction in his
new capacity of 'Commandant at the Philadel
phia Navy Yard. A number of other volunteer
tossts were given, and the party separated at an

A Queer Arson Case. A young man,,
nampu Edward Jenkins, was yesterday after
noon charccu with arson, in atterapiinir to burn
the boai-hoiise ot Mr. George Sheppard, No. 1115
Beach street. Mr. George Bakeoven, Govern-
n.ent watchman at Beach and Shackamaxon
streets, testitied that about 1 o'clock on Friday
morning the defendant camo to him and said
that he had suspicions of a man whom he heard
was going to set tire to Sheppard's building, he
requested the witness to watch in a certain
direc.ion, and arrest any one coming that way;
the accused left, and shortly afterwards witness
heard a hose cnri-iage going down the street; he
alter wards met detemlunt, who said, I told yon
there would be a lire. Fire Marshal Blackburn
testitied that ho had investigated the matter, aud
una conversed, wan the prisoner, who acknow
ledged the crime. After notifying tho watch-
man the prisoner had made the lire under the
door and escaped in u different direction. He
had run t" the Good Intent Ungine House, and
arousing tho members, had returned with them
to tne poat-snop. The accusal was committed.
The Social Union. An adjourned meet
ing of the Social Union was held last evening; in
the lecture-room ol the North Presbyterian
unnrcn, ixtn btreet, .above oreen. Key. Mr.
Beckel'presided, and opened the meeting With
prayer. Kev. Mr. Claxton, Hector of the Church
of the Advent, made a lengthy statement of the
ob ects ot tbp Society, lie was followed by Dr.
Osier, who specified many plans by which the
interests of the young men of the city can be
uuvuucru, ami uepicieut m vivia language, tne
dangers to which tbey are subjected by coming
in contact with, the various places ot doubtful
character to wlzich voung men are liable to
resort. An amendment was mtide. to the Consti
tution, by which twenty-five from each section
shall constitute a Board of. Jianagers. A nomi
nation lor officers was then made, after which
the meeting went into an election, resulting in
