We have seen a beautiful little telegraphic pre
sent intended for Ihe Cur of Kus-ia, a dos rip
tion of w hich will be of interest to our read is.
Tbe article is, In fact, a complete telegraph oili e,
comprised witbiu the compass of a morocco cau
eight inchtn in length, six inches In wi 1th and
three ami one-half inches in depth. Within this
case are concocted a complete galvanic battery,
known to telegraphers as tlio elec:ropol.ir bat
t rv, with six g'ass caps for the acids, in which
are inserted ihe zinc plates and carbons by which
in generated the electric tluid.
Attached to each cup is a switch, by which
either the whole or a part of the battery can be
applied to the wires connecting with the instru
ment. The force, or electric power gener ued by
this miniature buttery is niilllcient to worK tlio
instrument anil transmit eiisilv mc-snges between
thif city und llotton. The rel iy in ignet, w hich
is the Oirt et mi ans by which the battery and the
telegraph line over which are to be transmit'cl
the met siloes sen', is only thirty niches iu length,
in inch and a hair In width, the magnet com. .ris

thiead, covered with fine silk, each cod covered
with hone rubber and cont dningune mile of wire.
The "sounder," by which the operator d .-sign ites,

the loners transmitted, is only an inch mid a h 1 If
in length, un inch and a ipi iiu r wide, and an inch
in bright, comprising two upright magnets over
which is situ .ted the iirimiture conncc cd with
the brass standards by a small brass lever, the
whole set on a hodow base of hard rubber. The
key which the operator uses 10 transmit desp itches
is of brass, as Is also the switch attached to it, by
which the operator can, at will, "lhro.v oil " the
Current of electricity, titd is mounted on hud
rubber. The woikiuau-hip is of the linest char

contents of this little ease a cotuple'e and
thorough oullit for a lir-t-class telegraph o iice.
1'bc insi rutiieut is on the Morse svstem, and is
that which Is in general use in Kus-mi. This
bijou of telegraphy is Indeed a beautiful specimen
of American mechanism, such as will stiiiunato

which will add inucii to tlio widespread lame of

A very remote antiquity Is l.iiir.ed for tho
comb, which i9 of Egyptian origin. At first it
was made of wood and ivory, bat It was used for
i adjusting rather tban for fastening the hair a

their hair with great care, use I combs of box
wood, iron, and brone; tu prelims mo'.ils wore

"On crossing the Isthmus I met about two hun
dred young women on their way to California
each expecting that the ladios of that Stato were
dying to obtain their services at the rate of 10
per month in money, iu gwld and silver. On
arriving in New York, and also in Boston, I
found there bad been a perfect exodus, which
was still in progress. It is quite probable that at
least two thousand have left the J-ast for that
promised land in the past three months. Their
compensation here is but two Uol'ttrs per week iu
paper, and as the steamer companies demand
money for passage or iu equivalent in paper,
comparatively but few can raise the needful. If
the opposition day fare could be paid in green
backs, it is very probable that six months would
ee an Influx, at a moderate calculation, of twenty
thousand of them in that favored Htate. It is
curious to notice, when making a call, how the
help will contrive to keep around on one pre
tense and another, when they had the visitor is
from that direction. Whether those who make
the tiial and arrive there will realize their bright
bopes, you can tell better tban one who has own
absent from there Dearljr three mouths."

Anybody who has lived in Lebanon, Illinois,
of lute years, will remember Tom 11 , an eccen

choose a profession, remurking tb it such genius
as his should not bo buried under the shavings.
Says Tom, "Did I ever tell you of my theatrical
days " I answered negatively, aud begged to be
posted. Thereupon Tom told me as follows, in a
style it is impossible to iuiit.uo on p iper or any
other way: "I once took a fancy lor the stage,
and casting aside the planes, Ac, encaged myself'
to a strolling manager as a second-rato actor. I
rose in Ihe 'profession,' and became tbo 'star' of
tho troop. Once I was cast for a hard-hearted

manner) my consent to the marriage of my
daughter to the only poison who could make her
happy. The young lady who personated the
daughter whs a new actress, and I hud been cast
ing sheep's eyes at her for several days. Tho
time arrived. 1 went on tho stage, und my
daughter fell on her knees and be-uin to implore,
in tho most heart-rending und unicfusublc man
ner, my consent to her marriage. For awhile I
looked stern and unrelenting; but presently,
when sho turned on the tears yes, air, veritable
tears I forgot all about the stage, and roared
out, 'Well, my dear, have it all your own way I'
ho you see spouca ine ciopemonianii luewnoie

tion, and the general opinion was that I was not
cut lor an actor "
