A large portion of our paper to-day is taken up with intelligence from the "seat of war," the latest of which is that sixty three of Gen. Taylor's men have been ei ther killed or taken prisoners by the Mexicans. The intelligence of this dis aster reached Washington City on the 8th inst., and on the 11th the President sent a special message to Congress, an nouncing the fact and recommending the employment of additional forces against Mexico. The House immediately pass ed a WAR BILL, by a vote of 174 to 14. The Bill authorises the President to accept the services or 50,000 volunteers and appropriates fen millions bf dollars The Bill passed the Senate on the 12th by a vole of 40 to 2. Rational ISal!. The National Fair at Washington is to close with a grand National Ball, conduct ed upon temperance principles and the proceeds applied to charitable objects. It is intended to have 000 couples dancing on the floor at once. We opine it will require stroxo fiddling to make music sufficient for 1200 persons! A Washington letter writer savs: "It is expected that five hundred of the prettiest (factory) girls from Lowell will be here to help arrange and show the good?, and when the fair is over to join in the magnificent ball with which it is to be closed. In the House of Representatives on th. 11th inst., Mr. Hopkins, from the Post Office Committee, reported a bill provi ding for an increase in the rates of post age on letters and newspapers. Letters of one-quarter, ounce or less to be charged 3 cents for any distance not over 300 miles; over 309 and less than GOO miles 10 cents. Other letters in proportion. Newspapers sent less than 100 miles,l'cenl;over 100 2 rents. TheBill was read andcommitted;hut it is not likely Jo pass in its present form. Increase of tlic Army. A Bill has passed both Houses of Con gress providing for the increase of the rank and file of the Army. Each compa ny to contain 100 men and continue in service five vears. The Swedish sloop of war Charles Kroua was upset inasquallofTMatanzas, cn the 3d instant, and immediately sunk carrying down with her one hundred end fifteen souls! Lieut.
