SOLOMON PECK ,1 J. N. DING Ed. V Auditors. 8. H. BENNISON, J GENERAL WIMFIELD Scorr't GIG AN TIC SIZK AND CURIOUS LETTER.—-Kyery one has noticed the heroic size attribu ted to General Winfleld Scott io his statues and portraits. Few of them are exaggerations of his real propor tions. He was six feet four and a half inches high, and perfectly formed. In his full dress uniform he presented a superb appearance. It ia said the dimunitive Mexicans were awe-struck when they saw him, and that many of them attributed the success of the American to tbe grand physique of its leader. The general was greatly inconveni enced by his unusual size, and when ever he had an opportunity always had j special preparations made for his com fort. Io an old autograph album in Washington I find this letter written by his hand : WASHINGTON. D. C., ) Friday, .Tune 15, 1860. j Proprietors Girard House, Philadelphia: GENTLEMEN—Expect me at the Girard House to-morrow night at eleven o'clock, and please give me a bed at least six feet six inches io length or one without a foot board. Yours respectfully. WINFIELD SCOTT. VIOLATING HIS CONTRACT.—"Pa," taid rtotohv, who tisJ been allowed to sit up a little while after dinner with the distinct understanding that he was to ask no foolish questions, "can God do everything ?" "Yes." 4 Can He make a two-foot rule with only one end to it?" "One more question like that," eaid tbe old man, and you will be packed off to bed." Bobby noddedeleepily for ten min utes and then aektd : "Pa, can a camel go seven days without water?" "Yes." "Well, bow many day* could he go if he had water?" Tbe next thing Bobby knew he wae in bed. HEHSFHH? An Irish priest, wishing to ex plain the nature of a miracle to a skeptical parishioner, gave him a tre mendous kick. "Hid it hurt ye?" asked the reverend father. "Hurt I" exclaimed the victim, tenderly solac ing the aggrieved region with hie band, "ye may well ask that." "Well, then," eaid the clergyman complac ently, "it would have been a miracle if it hadn't hurt ye." Goggles op: "Very stupid girl, that Miss Wilpin." Ham worth —"How so?" "Why, you see we were guessing conundrums the other evening, and I asked her what tbe difference was be tween mvself and a donkey ?" "Well'?" "Well,' why, by Jove, she said she didn't know." rSSSKSSSSSSB HHT An Austin boy came from school very much excited, and told his father that all human beings were descended from the apes, which made the old man so mad that he replied angrily : "That may be the case with you, but it ain't with me, 1 can tell you that now, my son."—The boy didn't say any thing, but when his mother came home he told her about it* "Now, John," said the keeper of a cigar store at closing up time to his boy, "take the Indian figure from the door and lay it down behind the counter." "Hadn't we better let it atand behind the counter?" said John. 44 Why so?" asked the employer. "Because figures never lie, you know." There are now about five hun dred American resiJenta in Japan. They are found chiefly at four open ports, though a few live inland, and are employed by the Japaneee Govern ment. Three-fourths of theee Amer icans are missionaries, directly or in directly. An upright magistrate is one who has sense enough to see the right and' pluck enough to do it. The clear bead is needed as well ae tbe brave heart.—Stupidity on the bench is the unconscious but efficient ally of venality. Peace it the evening afar of the soul, M virtue it itt tun, aod the two are ntvtr far apart. The Way We Used to Do. When ike new Bay Game he was Prompt ly Initiated The tw boy hod moved in—that i, the family which owned the new boy had moved in. It wW quite likely the new boy would show up in the baok yard duriog the afternoon and so, after school, aeven boyi headed that way. The new boy had ooly been seen from a distance. Was he easey? No one could anewer. Would he fight? No one oould tell, kit must be tried f It fratf the solemn duty of every boy in that neighborhood to make tbia important diecovary at the earliest possible moment. If he oouM be licked, well and good; if he was a fighter iThey breathed hard over the thought. In bait an hour seven heads appear ed above the alley fence behind the new boy's house. He seemed to be expecting them, and bad heaped op a peck of green tomatoes at the foot of a pluru tree. The seven glared down at him. He glared up and back. "What cber want ?" It was the new boy and there was "sass 1 ' in his tone. "None o' yer biznees !" It was one of the seven who answer ed. "Git offn that fence!" "We won't!" "I eay git off!" "Shan't do it!" The new boy stooped for his toma toes, but when be raised up the seven heads were gone. It was settled be was sassy. Would he light ? "You ihere?" from the alley. "Who?" from the yard. "You dssn't fight t" "Yes I dast." "Dasn't come over !" "You see!" He came over. It had been settled that Johnny Flynn should tackle him, and Johnny was ready. He grabbed for the new boy's hat, and the new boy grabbed for bis coat, and they tugged and twisted. "Sick him, Johny I' "Clean him out!" "Pull his hair!" But the new boy had the best of it. And he came down on the ton of Johnny and gouged his eye and bit his finger, and offered to lick any one else in the crowd. His father came out just then, and the seven ran away, but the evidence was all in. The new boy would not only sass and fight, but he was boss. Before sundown that night he was presented with two big bites from an apple, three marbles, a ball of kite string, and half a pound of brown sugar in an old straw bat, and other boys were waiting to shower honors and presents upon him at sunrise. A Strange Apparition In Mercer County. Valentine Ham, a moulder in a stove foundry near the Valley mill, told a strange story last night to the Dispatch correspondent. A thorough investigation has confirmed the main facts of the statement. Several weeks ago as bis wife was returning home from a visit she noticed seated in the window of her house what seemed to be the figure of a middle aged lady, who wore a look of deep melancholy. Her head waa reeling on her hand. Unlocking the door, Mrs. Dam enter ed the room, to find it unoccupied, nor did a careful search reveal the presence of any person. A day or two after ward a neighbor entered and inquired the name of the strange lady sealed in the front room. Both women looked into the apartment, but it was aooc cupied. The vision was seen frequently from this time. Tbe place wa visited daily by curious people and they were not disappointed, as the figure could be seen perfectly through the window in the one position, tbe bead resting on the hand. Dam himself never saw the vision, although be frequently stood surrounded by a group of friends, all of whom ewore that they saw the mystery. Tbe descriptions given by different people tallied exactly. Dam's wife finally grew so nervous and scared over the thing that at her desire tbe family moved and now reside on Elm street. Since they have chaaged their residence they have not been troubled by tbe apparition. They are not su perstitious and gave the names of many people liviog in the vicinity who will vouch for the story. — Pittsburg Dispatch, Sorrt For tbr Old Ma*.—Arkan saw School Teacher (to boy)— Why didn't you come to school yesterday?
