THE Republicans in the Senate, in stead of making the best possible choice among the three men who were mentioned for the office of Presi dent of that body, made the very worst in selecting Sherman. It's endorcing the bloody-shirt policy. THE NEW TAX LAW is hardest on those who have money on interest. As long as people draw interest from a capital invested in any wise, they mnst pay a tax on that capital. a pi ftn have a clear conscience ho must state to the assessor truth fully and upon his oath the full a mount of moneys bearing interest. Ex-V ICE-PRESIDENT Wheeler Jad the good sense to remain away from the burial of Hendricks and showed much more discretion than Hayes. He remembeVed the great fraud of 1876 and no doubt a feeling of shame kept him away. But it seemed R. B. Hayes, the very man who stole the place-which rightfully belonged to Hendricks, had no shame and boldly presented himself at his funeral. SENATE and HOUSE. Sherman Selected by the Republi can Senatorial Caucus. WASHINGTON, Dec. 6.— Upon the meeting of the caucus of the Republi can Senators yesterday a motion was made tbat the caucus proceed to ballot for President of the Senate. Upon the ballot being taken Mr. Sberman receiv ed all the votes, and upon a motion of Mr. Edmunds the nomination was made unanimous, Carlisle Renominated lor Speaker. WASHINGTON, Dec. 6.— One hun dred and seventy-eight out of the 184 Democratic Representatives met at the capitol last night and, after chosing J. Randolph Tucker, of Virginia, Chair man, and Messrs. Beach and Brecken ridge Secretaries, selected the officers of the House during the Forty ninth Con gress. Mr. Carlisle was nominated for speaker unanimously and by acclama tion, his name being presented by Mr. Wiliia and Mr. Randall. WASHINGTON, Dec. 7.— The Senators were promptly on hand this morning. Promptly at noon General McCook, Secretary of the Senate, called the body to order, and prtiyer was offered by the Chaplain, Rev. Dr. Huntley. Mr. Edmonds offered a resolution declaring Senator John Sberman the President pro tempore of the Senate. Mr. Vorhees moved an amendment to strike out the name or John Sher man and insert instead the name of Senator Isham G, Harris. The amendment was voted down by a party vote—yeas, 29; nays, 34—and Mr .Sherman was, without division, de clared dulv elected President pro tem pore. THE HOUSE. Organization of the Lower Branch of Congress. WASHINGTON, Dec. 7.—At precisely noon the House was called to order by J. B. Clark, its Clerk, and the first ses' aion of the Forty-ninth Congress be gan. When order was secured the Clerk proceeded to call the roll of members •lect. NomioatioLS for Speaker were then in order, and Mr. Tucker, of Virginia, was recognized, who presented the name of John Griffith Carlisle, of Kentucky. Messrs. Hiscock, of New York, and Cannon, of Illinois, then rose, but the latter was recognized, and placed Thos. B. Reed, of Maine, in nomination. Messrs. Morrison, of Illinois; Tucker, of Virginia; Hiscock; of New York, and Browne, of Indiana, were appoint ed Tellers to count the vote, which was immediately proceeded with. The result was aunounced as follows; For Carlisle, 177; for Reed, 138, and, amid loud applause, the Clerk declared Mr. Carlisle elected, and appointed Messrs. Tucker and Reed us a commit tee to conduct the Speaker to the chair. After the routine work of organiza tion the bouse adjourned out of respect to the dead Vice Pfesident. Carlisle and His Committees. WASHINGTON, Dec, 7.—Speaker Carlisle to-day stated that he had made no attempt to select the members for the various committees of the House of Representatives, and wfhild not do so until the question of revising the rules had been settled. —YOUE tooth is too sound to be ex tracted, yet you cannot endure the ag ony it is inflicting. Ex-Senator Trumbull on the Sen ate Presidency. Chicago Dispatch to New York World. Speaking of the Vice Presidential succession, Ex-Senator Lvniun Trum bull (Democrat) said to-night: u ln the case of the death of the Vice President, the Senate elects a President, who is not a Vice President, but simply Pres ident of the Senate. 11 e still remains a Senator and lias a vote as any other Senator. The Vice President has no vote except when the Senate is evenly divided. Then he can give a casting yote. In case of the death of the President a Vice President succeeds to the Presidency and tills out the term.. A President of the senate, in case of the President's death, would only act as President until a new election could beheld. The President of the Senate, by courtesy, is often spoken of as Vice President, but he is not Vice President, either in law cr fact. 1 have no opinion as to who should be elected President of the Senate, but propriety would require the election of some Senator who was in accord with the party who elected the deceased Vice President." A Testament Characteristic of the Man. INDiNAPOLis,Ind., Dec. B.—The will of the late Vice-President Thomas A. Hendricks was probated this afternoon. It is in Hendricks' writing and the paper is yellow with age. It reads as follows: I, Thomas A. Hendricks, of Jl/arion County, Indiana, do make this last will and testament, hereby revoking any and all wills by me at any time heretofore made. I give, bequeath and devise to my beloved wife, Eliza C. Hendricks, all my personal and real property of every description what soever and wherever located. Also all my rights, claims, choses in action, and iu fee simple to have and to hold the same to her and her heirs. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand. And if agreeable to her, 1 desire that she shall be executrix thereof. THOMAS A. HENDRICKS. It is in order now for every manufac turer to praise and extol the virtues of his cougli medicine, and claim it ever so much better than any other. On square business principles the proprie tor of Dr Kessler's Celebrated English Cough 3/ediciue says if you are not sat isfied with the relief and benefit obtain ed, if you do not consider it well worth the price paid for it, then take the emp ty bottle back to your dealer and get your money. PITTSBURG, Pa., Dec.—The iron dealers report an advance of $1 on pig metal and 50 cents on ore within the past twenty-four hours. Business in this city is reported as good. The mills are booking plenty of orders at present, and through fhe use and economy of natural gas have decided advantage over the trade in general outside of Western Pennsylvania. Will sensations neyer cease? It now leaks out through the confession of one of the Clarion Connty counterfeiters in the I'ittsburg penitentiary, that tb e silver used in the manufacture of dollars, half-dollars, and quarters by the Boston Buck gang was dug from a mine on the farm of ex-Judge Sutton. An exarainat ion of the property has been made, and the story is fully con firmed. Silver of a splendid quality has beeu found in quantities to warrant the formation of a company, and min ing operations will be commenced in a short time. Brutality of a Teacher. NUMIDIA, Pa., Dec. 3.—The teacher of the District School, a young man named Trahes, son of a minister at Bloomsburg, is charged with placing a corncob in the mouths of refractory scholars and compelling them to stand on the floor with it in their mouths for various periods. Ilis last victim was a child of a farmer named George Snyder. When the cob was removed the end was coyered with blood, and the child was so weak from exhaustion as to be unable to move. When Farm er Suyder was informed of this treat ment IDS anger was almost uncontroll able. The matter was at once brought to the attention of the Directors, and a meeting will be held by them to invest igate the charges.
