Over Sixty People Drowned Near Baltimore. BALTIMORE, July 2 4. Black crape bangs from the door of many a bouse throughout Baltimore to day. Upwards of sixty dead bodies, the rcsuit of an accident at the Tivoii picnic grounds, aie awaiting burial. Tivoii is not far from North Point, on the Patapsco liver, about ten miles from this city. It xvas f irmally known as Holly Grove and was the first regu lar excursion place fitted up near the city about lifteeu years ago. At that time it was a popular place, but of late has lost considerable of its prestige. Yesterday there was an immense ex cursion to Tivoii, under the auspices of the Mount Royal Beneficial Society of the Catholic Church of Corpus Christi. of which Father Starr is pastor. The excursionists went down on the barge Cockade City, which was towed by the tug Amanda Powell. The barge was formerly an old canal boat, which had been fitted up with several decks for excursion purposes and used as such for several years. She made three trips to Tivoii yesterday, carrying down several hundred passengers altogether, who were gathered from all parts of the city. ON TIIE KICKETY WHARF. There is a long wharf at Tivoii, prob ably a thousand feet long. When the Cockcade City reached the picnic grounds 011 the last trip doxvn it was 10 o'clock at night. She was very late and the great body of excursionists' were tired of waiting. Between 150 and 200 of them pressed upon the wharf before the gate which guards the entrance to the wharf had been closed against them. The wharf was old and rickety and could not stand iho weight of so many impatient people. Near the boat-end of the wharf is another gate. This was locked before more than a few people could get through and thus most of the excurtionists on the wharf were between the two gates. The Cockade City drew up to the pier and the gang plank was thrown across. Just then tnere was a crash, followed by loud shrieks and cries for help. Just where the great body of excurtionists had been standing there was a great, yawning hole. The wharf bad given way and scores of excurtionists were struggling in the water. STRUGGLING IN TIIE XVATEII, The scene beggers description. The cries of the drowning men, women and children were heartrending. The moon bad gone down and the only light xvas that shed by two ft e'.le ? A r,\\ oil lami>. Some of tlifl lescuers took the bar go lantenis and set them on the wharf. Two of them exploded a ,„i added fresh terror to the scene. Those on the leeks of the haute threw off preservers, stools and benches into the water. Phe<e struck a great many 011 the head and knocked thehi Insensible. Others let down planks and ropes, An iudesci ih nhle liopeleSsness and terror reigned. Shrieks, curses, groans mingled with cries of ''(it>t 1 save in the midst <>t tin* awful conftishm strong me t fought their way out of the clutc.hes of j I drowning women and children iti their m id off ats to save their lives,on ly to be clutched .*ain ami again by some other and llnalW through sheer exhaustion going down with those who impeded their efforts in their attempts to save them.salves hy clinging to tlietn. They conk! he seen tearing up ati.l down the river bank, wringing their hands and almost frantic in their effort to thai missing ones. . It was an awful scene There were hut half a dozen cool heads in the lot. Those who kept their pres ence or mind aided in saving the st nig gling ones in the water and many weie" licitcd ashore. As goon as possible the Cockade City got off to the city with a number of tho dead bodus, leaving hundreds of excursionists to spend tl-e night on the river banks, sc.uniting for others of the dead. ■■ ■ - i.- ...... .... tiiKir, On the 171 Ii fit., i ear Fni/nciV Mills, in Gregg township.
