WANTED—A LITTLE HORSE SENSE.
—ln an interview a few days ago,
Charles S. Wolfe, the leader of the In
dependent Republicans, says:
"The situation is about this* If the
Democrats have horse sense and name
a good ticket, one that is progressive
and up with the times, they will defeat
Beaver and the rest of the Cameron
men; but if they do not place a good
ticket in the field the Stalwarts will win
and the result will be the disiutegra
tiou of the Democratic party and the
formation of a new party in this State,
composed of the best elements of the
two prominent parties as they now
stand."
Democrats, listen to this ! A very
trilling thing is needed next fall for the
Democrats to carry the State —only a
little "horse sense." We hope the.y
will look about them and pick up this
desirable article. We will assist them
with our ola DEMOCRAT spy-glass.—

A Town Destroyed, by the Indians.
THIRTY-FIVE .WHITES lill LED.
Karcastie Letter to the President ami
Cabinet.
SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., April 2B.— A
dispatch from Shakespeare N., M.,
dated yesterday, says: A telegram just
received from the operator at Steiu's
Pass reports that the town of Greeleys
ville, in Arizona, just oi'er the New
Mexico line, was burned aud coinpleto
ly destroyed this afternoon by Indians.
Thirty-live white people were killed.
* The Indians are scattering into small
bands and making for the Chirlcahua
mountains. Colonel Forsyth, with his
entire command, is in pursuit.
A Tucson dispatch says: at a mass
meeting of several thousand citizens
held to-night it was unanimously deci
ded that the following be sent, and it
was iaimediatel y wired as an open let
ter to the president and his cabinet and
to both houses of congress:
"During the rejoicings incident to
tlie grand military display announced
to take place at Fortress Monroe, we
beg to offer you as a skeleton to sit at
your banquet the fact that nearly 100
of our pioneers have, within a few days
been wantonly murdered in cold blood
by the devilish Apaches whom a cruel
and a mistaken policy permits to sur
vive their crimes. If some small por
ii ).i of expenditure incurred in your
grand display could be directed to such
measure ns would preclude the proba
bility of an increase in the list of our
murdered dead, we could send you u
greeting of gratitude and cheer, ill
place of the message revealing our sor
row, helplessness and our desolation.

GRKENSBURO led., April 21.— A
mob of liftv masked men at 6 o'clock
this morning called on the jailer, and,
by choking him, tried to get the keys

placing a placaid on the body, reading;
''This is greeting to the Jennings

A CRAZY HU33AND'S CRIME.
A Cheater County Mathematician
Murders His Wife With a Rolling-
Pin.
WEST CHESTER, Apiil 25.
Much excitement was caused here
to-day by the announcement that J.

"Professoi" Andrew s, as lie is famil

to watch him. Last night, while Mrs.
Andrews was in her sitting room, h?r
husband, who had been left unguarded
for a moment in an adjoining room,
seized a rolling-pin and, quietly steal
ing up behind his wife, dealt her a ter

floor insensible, while the attendant,
returning just at this moment-, secured
Andrews and summoned medical aid.
There was no hope, however, and Mrs.
Andrews died at four o'clock this
moruing, without recovering conscious
nc-ss. She was about fifty years of age.
Professor Andrews who is about sixty
years old, accura ulated a large fortune
