LAST NOTICE.— The Ivooks and ac counts of the GAZETTE Office, have been placed in the hands of H. Xico demus, Esq., for collection. Those in arrears will save costs by settling at an early date. All accounts prior to the first of August, 18G8, are included in the above. Flon. Geo. W. Cass is stopping at the Springs. We have no public school system now—it is vacation. The Chestnut and Walnut crops are abundant in our county. The Katies have begun their quar rel as to who did and who didn't. Solferino Crystals sold at Hecker man's drug store. Hon. Asa Packer is an honest man "the noblest work of God." An acre of buckwheat yields four teen pounds of honey daily. ■ - 0 Read the Advertisements—they are full of information. Pure eider vinegar, very good, at Heckerman's drug store. Post no bills here!—has reference we take it to the indignant mosquito, as well as to bill posters. The blackbirds are wheeling into Hook, preparatory to their departure south. Bacheloric exclamation around here —a lass! Maidenly ejaculation—ah men? New oats is generally reported to be of full weight, and remarkably good in every respect. 11. Heckerman and Son sell ail kinds of dyes much cheaper than any one else. Success is a duty—but our people of ten fall short of it. It is the fall that makes the mischief. All who want to by real estate expect to find it advertised in the BEDFORD GA ZETTE. The campaign has opened,—and the BEDFORD GAZETTE should be road by all who believe that "a white man is as good as a nigger." The United States Treasurer lias call ed in -all the ten dollar notes owing to the successful counterfeitingof that de nomination. Laboring men of lied ford county, if you want low /urea, good times , and an honest man for governor, vote for Hon orable Asa Packer, the Boatman of the Lehigh. A republican in Carbon county, say 3 that two out of every five republicans in that part the state will vote for the Honorable Asa Packer. Our friends should remember that this fall we elect Ward and Township officers to take the places of those whose terms will expire in the Spring. Nominate good men, it will strength en the State Ticket. This summer is remarkable for its coolness- and has not been equal led on that line since 1816. We do not re member that far baok, but, ancients tell us so. The Greeks thought blaeklierries a preventive of gout. If the rule will hold good in our time we have enough left on our hillsides to preserve this country from the disease for a century to come. A large black beetle, wearing upon its back rows of most brilliant gold slots, is the friend of the farmer. From its eggs are produced the corn-grub killer, the most inveterate foe of the cut-worm. SAD BKREAVRMKNT.— A little daughter of Mr. S. S. Diehl, of this place, died on Sunday last from the ef fects of eating eight "worm-lozzenges" the day before, which the child no doubt mistook for candies. BEDFORD COUNCIL, NO. 202 U. O. A. M. was instituted on Thursday night, Aug. it), 1860, by Eli Hailenger, I>. 8. C. assisted by Abner Manly, Ful ton Council No. 30, M. S. Bower and John M. Major, Harrishurg Council No. 100. The following officers were installed: C., T. JR. Gettys; V. C., Geo. Leader; R. 8., W. G. Riffie; A. R. 8., T. It. Kegg; F. S., Weely Defi huugli; T., Wm. Bowles; J., W. S. Fletcher; E., J. P. Cessna; 8. P., Ed. Ferry ;O. P., B. 8. Fletcher. Trus tees, C. N. Hickok. T. It. Gettys, W. G. Riffie. JSUW IS THE ACCEPTED TIME.—The yellow slip of paper pasted on each subscriber's GAZETTE contains his name and a date. The date indicates from what time he owes us for the pa lter, and as our terms are #2 in advance and $2.00 if not paid within the year, lie knows exactly how much to remit us. Come forward, friends, just now is the accepted time, and send at once the amount you owe us and you will receive the printer's blessing. We stand greatly in need of the money you owe us, as we must pay our paper bills, Ac., in cash, (and they are not small like the hills due us for the paper), and unless our patrons pay us punctu ally, we must borrow the money to en able us to send them the GAZETTE.— Come, roll in, tumble in, and don't lie afraid to pay the printer, especially you who are indebted to us from 'laugf>s,' ♦l.loetGV 'laugtki,' 4 iaugti7,' and other 'ancient' dates. MUDER IN BROAD TOP.— Pat. Mack ey, a young miner, was waylaid and murdered, near Barnetstown, last Sat urday evening. This cool-blooded murder has shocked the whole Mining Region.—A gang of assassins waylay ing a man near a populous village at 8 o'clock, p. M. It appears that the de ceased, Mac key, refused to unite in the "Miners' Association," and hence come under the displeasure of its emissaries. Four persons have been arrested, char ged with the crime, and lodged in Huntingdon jail. One is yet at large, but will be followed up. Such is the liberal working of these "benevolent" societies, if a man declines to join them lie must be waylaid and his scull bro ken with a bolt of iron. If any excite ment had existed amongst the miners of the Region, this murder would not appear in all its horrible nakedness and brutal enactment, but there is general peace at present, hence its monstrous brutality, viewed from any light. One of the prisoners is reported as hurrah ing for the penitentiary as he went a board the cars for Huntingdon. The appearance and general make up of the party struck the observer forcibly by their brutal and dogged appearance.— Their faces are uudoubtedly more near ly allied to the bull-dog than the Cau casian. Rye, oats and corn may all fail anil still the farmer gets along, hut let the wheat crop be a failure and how many make both ends meet at the end of the year? Jlow important then is it to have your ground seeded at the right time and in the best way. To do this, you must own a good drill, one that will sow regularly, on all kinds of ground and that will not break, on our rocky and stumpy fields. Thousands of farmers will testify that the Wil loughby Gum Spring Drill, sold by Hartley & Metzger, sole Agents for this and adjoining counties, is the only Drill that will do this. A NOTICEABLE FACT.— That one way of appealing to a man's reason is through his eye. In these busy times men are so deeply immersed in the conduct of magificent projects, that they forget all about the condition of their system, and hence it is that the Proprietors of the Plantation Bitters, which cures Dyspepsia, purifies the blood improves the toneof thestomach, regulates the bowels, and, indeed invig orates the whole inner man, are so ac tive in advertising. In fact, adver tisements are merely sky-rockets sent up to attract attention to a really good article. MAGNOLIA WATER,.— Superior to the best imported German Cologne, and sold at half the price. Everybody has suffered so much from the accursed CREDIT SYSTEM, if system it can be called, that I intend to offer to every body a panacea for the evil in the future. On and after the first day of June, 1869, I will sell goods EXCLUSIVELY FOR CASH OR PRO DUCE. No doubt some customers may be lost to me, hut I flatter myself that it will be only those from whom I cannot collect present accounts. All goods will be sold at about one-half the profit now pa'd by consumers. The people often complain of Bedford prices being higher than else where, and it is doubtless true, to some extent, for the reason that good customers have had to pay forothers' goods with an additional profit on their own. Let an intelligent community sustain me in this enterprise and they WILL SAVE FROM TEN TO FIFTEEN PER CENT. ON EVERYTHING THEY CONSUME. mayHmS H. F IRVINE.
