ings about "soldiers standing no
chance for office in the Democratic
party." They have nominated gallant
J)emocratic soldiers for the best offices

BITTEN BY A DOG. —One day last
week, Mr. John Kittle, of Todd town
ship, was very badly bitten by his dog.
Trie dog was lying on the porch, and
Mr. K. WAS passing into the the house
when the dog sprang at him catching
him by the hands lacerating them very
much.— Fulton Democrat.
RAILROAD AGITATION.— The people
of Morrison's Cove and Hollidaysburg
are agitating the question of a railroad
from the latter place to Pattonsville.
There seems to be a reasonable pros
pect for its early commencement. Jly
the way, what has become of the Bed
ford and Bridgeport railroad ? Has
the mhtter entirely died out? Who
can answer ?
A NUMBER of gentlemen residing in
this vicinity, have recently visited
Tennessee, with a view of removiug
to that State, if pleased with the count
ry and |>eople. Some of them have
purchased farms there and intend mak
ing it their permanent %ome. They
report the Tennesseans to be a gener
ous and hospitable people and declare
that they were agreeably surprised in
finding them gentlemen in every re
spect, instead of murders and outlaws
as they have been studiously represent
ed to be by the Radical press.
LAV REPRESENTATION.—The ques
tion of lay representation is the all
absorbing question in the Methodist
church, all over the country, at this
time. The friends of representation
appear to have the thing pretty much
their own way, for so far as the votes
have been received, they have been
cast by an overwhelming majority in
favor of the laity. The church at this
place voted on the question with the
annexed result:

ABOUT GUIDE BOARDS.—The law re
quires guide boards to lie placed at the
forks of every road, and it is the duty
of constables to report to the court ca
ses where the law has not been com
plied with. This is a useful prevision
and beneficial to all classes of people.
Nothing is more unpleasant than not
to know which of two roads to take,
especially when a long distance from a
place where inquiries can be made. —
Many townships in this county are en
tirely deficient in this respect, We
would respectfully call the attention of
road supervisors to this subject.
One of our exchanges gives the fol
lowing schedule of prices for the bene
fit of those who need and seek after
"puffs."

BEDFORD SPRlNGS.—Visitors to the
Springs are already coming in. We
understand that enough rooms have
been engaged to make this an unusual
ly brisk season. If the weather is fa
vorable, a great influx of pleasure and
health seeking people may be expect
ed by the middle of July.
The Arandale House is doing a brisk
business in the way of visitors, and we
learn that the proprietors expect to
fill the house to its utmost capacity.
Cramer's Cottages have more than
double the number they had last y ear >
this time of the season, and they wiil
be filled early.
Mrs. Tate's boarding house contains
a number of strangers, and as the place
is pleasantly located on Julianna
Street, we have no doubt it will be
profitably patronized.
Of Cheuoweth's we have not heard,
but that elegant place will no doubt
have its usual number of visitors.
A number of our citizens have gone
to considerable expense to accomodate
the traveling public, and we hope that
they will receive the patronage they
deserve.
IT has always been a difficulty a
mong citizens in insuring their lives,
that the Companies in which they in
sure are limited iu responsibility to the
laws of a single State. This has rather
prevented the spread of Life Insur
ance, so that it is not as general iu this
country as it is perhaps in Germany
and England. Several of our most dis
tinguished citizens, headed by MR. JAY
COOKE, of Philadelphia, have removed
this difficulty by chartering a compa
ny under a law of Congress which
gives it equal power in every State and
governs it by unity of action. This is
the National Life Insurance Company
of the United States of America. The
advertisement is printed in another
column. Its cash capital is one mil
lion dollars. It insures lives upon ev
ery plan known to other Companies,
and in addition to that, it issues# poli
cy which at the end of ten years will
pay to the holder an annuity during
his life and the full value af.er death.
The common instincts of prudence, the
desire of every man to know that those
whom he leaves behind may be kept
from want, the shrinking from impov
erty we all have, the constant, anxious
wish in the mind of every man that
his children shall not suffer or be com
pelled to beg for bread, should lead
him to take advantage of the scheme
here offered, and to cover his life with
a policy of insurance. For the expen
diture of four ceuts a day, ho can be
assured a thousand dollars when he
dies - and on any sutn he may choose
to take at the same rate. It is well to
put money into a savings bank. It
is perhaps better to put it into a safe
and well managed business. But banks
are robbed, and business may fail, and
evil days may come to the most thrif
ty and far-seeing. A good Insurance
Company is beyond any of these dan
gers ; and the duty of prudence—a du
ty so strong that to neglect it is almost
a crime—should compel every man
who values his own comfort and the
happiness of those around him
to take the advantage of a scheme like
that offered by Mr. Jay Cooke and his
friends.
If the ladies but knew what thous
ands of them are constantly relating to
us, we candidly believe one half of the
weakness, prostration and distress ex
perienced by them would vanish.—

The Great Backeye Machine again
victorious. At a contest at Hummels
town, Dauphin eo., on the loth day of
June, 1869, a premium was awarded
the Buckeye machine No. 2, over
Dodge's Ohio, the Excelsior, the Val
ley Chief, the World, the Mount Joy
and the Russell machines. The clover
and timothy were very heavy and bad
ly lodged, and the ground stony. Af
ter a thorough searching test, to which
all the machines were subjected, the
committee unanimously awarded the
premium to the Buckeye No. 2., over
all the aboye named machines.

In Rhode Island a white man can
not vote unless he is the owner of one
hundred and thirty-four dollars' worth
of real estate; yet, at the next session
of the Legislature, the Radicals will
adopt the fifteenth constitutional
amendment, by which all the worth
less negroes in the State can deposite
their votes in the ballot box. In the
estimation of the Rhode Island Radi
cals, a white man must own a house
and lot in order to be equal in value
and importance to a negro, who is
"simple beauty unadorned." Every
thing for the negro, nothing for the
white man, is the motto of the Radical
party. In Washington men are beaten
and shot, and cut and hacked, in order
to put the Capital of the nation under
negro domination, and the same spirit
is manifested in all parts of the country.
The question is no longer, shall the
negro be equal with the white man?
