Read the - New Advertisements'' in this week's issue of THE GAZETTE. v v For Administrator's, Executor's, Auditor's notices, Ac., see ••Legal Notices."' ■I „ Read the advertisements under the head of "Notices, Ac." ToSinscuißKKS. —We are now using "Dirk's Printed Accountant- Addres in putting the names of .subscri ber- on their papers. By this system there (-.in tie no name mis.-ed in direct ing, and sul)scrii>ers can always see the time from which their subscriptions date. All delinquents are marked "laugfio", and all accounts due tliis of fice until that time, must be settled by i\rbrtian </ court next. After that date we shall commence a new system of cof tvet it,u , as we find that duns do no good. We have been and are daily, at an enor mous expense, and will l>e compelled, on this account to enforce payment.— We hope no patron of the GAZETTE will put us to the painful necessity of instituting legal proceeding*. Those who are at present subscribers and are in arrears, can have the paper for the i-re-ent year at the advance rate of §2 per annum, by payingat, or before, Feb ruary court. After that time, they will Pe charged $2.00, and if not paying within the year, §3.(10. The cash sys tem is best for both sub-criber and pub lisher and we have determined, as near ly as possible, to adopt it. THE REASON* Wit V.—Many readers <i" not understand why printers make 'wenty-riveper cent, difference bet ween an nrlriiD'r payer and one who pays af ter theexpiration of months. We have a case in point. Had each subscriber paid in advance two months ago, we could have laid in our.stock of paper for the ensuing year at a little over ten hundred dollars; now the same amount f -tuck would cost over fifteen hundred h'liars! This is but one item; many "tliers, though not so large in amount, would show a similar increase in cost. If,after February court, some of our patron- have to pay two dollars and a half, they will understand the reason. The Influence of Newspapers. —Occasionally an individual says to u> ''times are so hard with me, I must stop my paper," or as in some instance, "my wife thinks we can dlsjjen.se witli the paper now, and I must stop." Thus it is, -.top the paper the first thing as a Useless expense, without thinking of the actual waste of money for many things drank, eat, smoked or chewed, which ran do the system no good, hut rather harm. The newspaper, can, or should, be regarded as a benefit to every house hold; it imparts useful information; it furnishes subjects for thought and conversation ; it adds a charm to social intercourse; it makes agreeable mem bers of society. To he without a news paper one might as weii he out of the world; he becomes a perfect nobody; when he goes into society and hears others talk about current events and discuses questions of local or general interest, lie can take no part in these things heeau>e he is not posted up, not having raid the paper-. And in the family circle what an influence the pa per has—the children read it and gain knowledge; it serves to occupy their leisure hours, to keep them from frivo lou> amusements, and gives an attrac tion to home. Surely, then, no wise parent would consent to go without a new-paper in his family—and a local home newspaper too. He may think he can get along without it, because he is out in the world, and can have the reading of the paper from ids neigh l>ors' shop or store or can learn what is going on from others. Hut this i-rath er a mean way. Men ought to be in dependent. They ought to read for themselves. If, however, they think they do not need the paper themselves, they may rest assured their families do. Considerations like these should have their weight, and should induce those who have had thoughts of stop ping their newspapers not to do so, and for those who have not taken a paper to subscribe at once for one. POSTAL MATTERS. —Much has lately been published about postal affairs, yet a great many persons do not seem to have read or do not understand it.— The Harrisburg Telegraph gives a few of the regulations, which we transfer to our columns for the benefit of such of our readers as are not fully posted in the post office laws:— Quito a number of letters are put in to the letter box at the post-office with out the payment of postage. In some instances the stamp marks from a stamped envelope have been cut oil' and attached to the common envelopes, which is contrary to law. Persons should be careful in having all letters prepaid with at least one three cent postage stamp, or inclosed within a three cent stamped envelope; otherwise, let ters will he sent to the Dead Letter < )!'- lice, and from there returned to the writer. Stamps cut from a stamped envelope and re-attached to a letter, are unlaw ful, and any persons convicted of this misdemeanor is liable to a fine of not less than S-'iO. Persons sending money to places where money order offices are establish ed, will do well to send it by money order, by which no loss can occur, the money l>eing jtaid to the postmaster, who issues his order to the postmaster at the place to which the money is re mitted, and it will there he paid to tin pro per person. Kates of commission charged for money orders are as follows: (>n order not exceeding $ Hi, 10 cents; over $lO and not exceeding $2O, locents; over $-0 and not exceeding $3O, 20 cents. No money is received for orders except coin, United States notes and notes of the National Banks, and orders cannot he paid in any other currency. Mi SK AE.—The only HEED instru ment that the celebrated Pianist < ioTTs- CHALK, will use or recommend, is Ma son A- Hamlin's Cabinet Organ, and of them he says: "YourCabinet<)rgan is truly Achunn ing instrument, WORTHY of the high praise it has received, and EAR SI PER XOR to every thing of it- class I have seen." B. M. Demorest's magazine of fashion. It is an elegant publica tion, neatly printed and filled with a variety of useful and entertaining mat ter for ladies. Several fine engravings embellish the number, and the colored fashion plate is very beautiful. There is also a new piece of music and full size pattern sheets. • ■ ■ Before the imitators of Eubin's Ex tracts can persuade the American pub lic to adopt their spurious preparations, two miracles must IK- accomplished. The manufacture of Phalon's "Night Blooming Cereus" must be stopped, and the nation deprived of its sense of smell. While ltoth exist, the former will continue to enchant the latter. Sold everywhere. Which would behest / It is a question with some whether it would not have been better to have sold the "Family Record" through the book stores in stead of solely by agents. We are not prepared tosay which plan is preferable, but either will do, for everybody will buy one no matter who sells them. CORRECTION. —In the petition pre sented by W. W.
