Two years :iso she hail an a'tuck of acute rheumatism, from which she was confined to hei be-t lor two weeks, nni! subsequently from a relapse for four more. She has been welt vnet then, till lost Sotorilay ; while engaged in honse-elaiiuii( she took pohl, hat p .in in her back, felt cold but I bad no decided chill. Two days later her ankles I began to swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints aid of the hands. She has now dull pain in.her shoulders, and her knuckles are veiy tender, red and painful; both hands are ffectnl, but ttie right is most so. This, then, is a ease 01 Brute rheumatism, or, as it is now f.ish'Ouably rail ed, rheumatic lever. It is a well niaikerl typical case. We will eurefu ly wateh the case, and from time to time rail your attention to the various symptoms which piesent themselves. My chief object in bringing her before you no.v, is to rail yourwltention to a remedy which has recently been recommended in the treatment ot rheumatism. I mean propylamine. Dr. Awenariiis, of S'. Peters burg, recommends it in the highesl 'erms, having derived great benefit from it- use in 200 cases which came under bis rare. Various com .m-mlatory tes tlrtionia's respecting it have app-aeil in out jour nals, and I propose theiefole to give it another tn.il. I mint confess I am always inrredn ou- a- to the I worth of new remedie-, which aie vaunted as ,pe. cities; but thiscomeg to us recommended so highly, that we aie bound to give it a trial. SAME .:ASE FOUR DAYS LATER! MAY 23, 1860.—1 will now exhibit ;o you the p i tient for whom I prescribed Piopy Itmiine, and who was then iaboiing under an attack of acute rheuma tism. She has steadily teken it in doses of three grain!, every two l ours, (intermitting it nt night) Ihe day alter you saw her, 1 found he- much inoie comfoitable, b'iter than she expected to be for a week or more, judging from her other attack. ( The patient now walked into Ihe loom.) i'h- improve meat bag steadily progressed, and you cannot f.t,| to notice a marked change in the appearance of her joints, which are now nearly of their natural -ize. Thus lar our experiment would have seerneu ve;y successful 1 ,- but gentlemen, we mu-t wait a litlle while beiore we car. give a decided opinion as to wrh.it is to be the result. Her-'is another patient who was placed .on the use of the same medicine on Sunday last; she has long been suffering from chronic th-umutism, and I found her at that time with an acute attack suoer vening upon her chronic affection. Toe wri-'s and knuck es were mum swollen and tense. She took ■the chloride of propylamine in three grain doses every two hours, and you wilt p-rceive that the ■we Ling of the joints has much diminished. THREE DAYS L \TER !! MAY 26, 1860. Ibis is the case o* acute rheum atism treated will) propylamine, the first o; those to which I called yourattention at our last cl riic. She is still very comfortable, and it now taking three grains thrice daily. In this case it has seemed to bp fo 'owed by very •atislactory results. The second case to which your ultehtion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to do Well, i wi,| now bring hcfaio you very characteristic case of acute rh<-umat srr, and if the mil t be satisfactory, I think, at. pood jurymen , ire shall justly rentier our verdict tn favor propylamine. Itiere is lever and Ihe profit e sweating, so gener ally attendant on acute iheumatisrn. I did not bring this patient before you with the Intention of giving you alert re on all the points connected with rheumatism, hut to again give a in al to the new remedy we are t-ting, and to exhibit to you this typical case, as I h, ve called it, thin which there could not be a fairer opportunity tor testing the medicine in question.
